27 | I Can't Breathe

Other than the extra testerone, the week had gone better than Maya thought it was going to.

Klaus and Liam had to get into their heads that they were both going to have to deal with the others presence, one way or another.

With a lot of guidance, Maya explained to the boys how to warm up a bottle, how to feed the baby, how to change the baby, etc.

Once they caught on, she was able to get to sleep, not for long though because the babies kept crying. Which was to be expected.

Klaus was currently at the store at Maya's request to buy three car seats so she could have two and Liam could have one.

He was still a little iffy about the whole parenting thing but Maya was confident that eventually he would get into it.

"I'm not letting you take our newborn baby into the woods," Maya stated, not in the mood for an argument.

"I have a pack to take care of, but I also want to be a part of Tyler's life. Why does he get to stay with you?"

"It's not a permanent thing. It's for a few months, just until he's older, and his immune system is stronger. This isn't an ideal situation Liam but we can make it work as we go."

"Then how are we going to do it from there? A week with you, a week with me? How is this going to work when we live in different states?"

"I don't know," Maya said rubbing her face in frustration.

She let out a breath to calm down before speaking again, "Look, I know this is a lot to take in but we will get through this and everything will turn out how it's supposed to. I need you to go with me on this one, okay?"

He let out a sigh of defeat before nodding, "Yeah, yeah, okay."

Maya placed her head down on the table when Hope started to cry. She stood up and walked over to her, carefully picking her up.

Throughout the week, Maya had spent a lot of it learning what their cries meant.

"I'm going to go feed Hope upstairs, Tyler is still sleeping. If Klaus comes back, please don't pick a fight."

He nodded and she made her way upstairs with Hope.

Their hunger was like a clock. Usually Hope gets hungry first and almost exactly 30 minutes later Tyler would start crying.

After Hope was done eating, Maya sat in her bed with her back against the headboard with the baby in her arms.

There was a knock on the door before it opened, revealing Liam and Tyler, "The car seats were outside the door, I put them in the cars already. This is for you."

He handed me a piece of paper that had been folded four times and had her name written on the front in cursive.

She immediately recognized the handwriting as Klaus's and opened it.

'Dear Maya,

I have some business to attend to with the Salvatore brothers so I needed to leave. I would have come inside to say goodbye but you and Liam seemed to be having an important conversation and I didn't want to intrude. I'll be back soon love, so don't worry.

Sincerely,

Klaus Mikaelson'

Maya folded the note back up and stuck it in her pocket just as Tyler started crying.

"Right on schedule," she said with a small laugh. "Can you watch Hope for me?"

"Yeah," Liam said before handing me Tyler and taking Hope.

Tyler was more hungry than Hope so he took a lot longer. Once he had finished, Maya cleaned up and walked downstairs.

"Liam?" Maya shouted across the house.

She pulled out her phone and dialed his number.

"Hello Maya," his voice came across the line, it was different. He sounded lifeless.

"Where are you? Where's Hope?"

"She's with me. She's safe, for now."

"For now? What does that mean? Liam, what the hell is going on?"

"Liam, answer me now!" she shouted, causing the window to shatter and Tyler started crying. She covered him and made sure he was okay before focusing on Liam.

She heard him chuckle before the line clicked.

Maya grabbed the diaper bag and her keys off the counter and ran to her car. She unlocked it and buckled Tyler in safely. Handing him his blanket, she shut the door and got into the driver's seat before heading back to her home.

She pulled out her phone and called Klaus but he didn't answer.

"Come on," Maya muttered, glancing into her rear-view mirror to see Tyler sleeping.

She dialed another number on her phone and it rang three times before they answered.

"Stefan, thank god."

"Is everything okay?"

"Yes. No, I mean no, everything is not okay. Absolutely nothing is okay. How could anything possibly be okay," she rambled on.

"Okay, calm down, what happened?"

"He took Hope, I don't know where he went with her and I don't know what he's going to do to her. He's not himself."

"Who? Klaus?"

"No, Liam. I asked him to watch her while I fed Tyler and when I got downstairs he was gone. I called him and he said she was safe for now. Stefan, I don't know what he's going to do to her."

"Everything is going to be okay. Are you on your way here?"

"Yes, yeah. I'm almost there. Is Klaus anywhere near you?"

"I'll find him."

"Don't tell him what happened, just tell him to call me as soon as possible. I don't want him doing anything stupid."

"Okay, meet me at my place. We'll get her back," he said before he hung up and finished the drive back to the Salvatore house.

Maya anxiously tapped the wheel of her car as she pulled into the driveway.

She hopped out and grabbed Tyler and his stuff before walking inside.

Without knocking, Maya walked into the house.

"Stefan!" Maya shouted as she shut the door.

"Maya?" Elena questioned. She walked out of the living and saw Maya. "What are you doing here? I thought you were going to stay there for awhile?"

"Where's Stefan?"

"He left a while ago, something about trying to find Klaus. What's going on?"

"It's Hope."

"Is she sick or something?"

"No, Liam took her," Maya said, growing more and more anxious by the second. They made their way to the kitchen, "Can you call Stefan?"

"Where did he take her?" Elena asked as she pulled out her phone.

"I don't know!" she shouted angrily causing the lights to spark and Maya immediately regretted it. "Oh my god, I'm so sorry."

"It's fine, just tell me what's wrong," she said as she dialed Stefan's number and put it on speaker.

"He took her, I asked him to watch her while I fed Tyler and he just left with her," Maya explained once again as she rocked Tyler back and forth. "I called him and he said she was safe for now. I don't know what to do. Klaus won't answer so I called Stefan to see if he could find him for me."

"Elena? Is everything okay?" Stefan's voice came through the phone.

"Have you found Klaus?"

"Yeah, we're on our way."

A few moments after Stefan hung up, two voices spoke as they entered the house.

They entered the kitchen and saw Elena and Maya standing there holding Tyler.

"Maya? What's wrong?" Klaus asked as Stefan and Elena left the room to give them privacy, Elena taking Tyler from her.

She turned away from him in hopes of not crying but it was pointless.

Klaus moved closer and stood behind her, not saying anything.

She slowly turned around but her eyes remained on the floor.

He grabbed her hands gently and she slowly looked up, tears forming in her eyes.

"What happened?"

Maya couldn't keep it in anymore and broke down.

"I'm so sorry, this is all my fault. I'm sorry."

He gently lifted her chin up and forced her to look in her eyes, "Maya, you have to tell me what happened."

"It's Hope."

After explaining what happened, Maya was now sitting on the couch as they tried to figure out the next move.

"When we find him, I'm going to kill him," Klaus said in anger.

"No one is killing anybody," Stefan said, "We don't know what made Liam do this."

Klaus moved in front of Stefan, "He took my daughter and threatened her life. I don't care what his reasoning is, he's going to pay."

Both Elena and Stefan were surprised with how Klaus was acting. Not the violent tendencies but the fact that he genuinely seemed to care.

Maya sat on the couch, her leg bouncing up and down as she stared at her phone anxiously waiting for a call or a text that would tell her where her baby is.

"You aren't going to kill him," Stefan argued.

"Enough!" Maya shouted and everyone looked at her.

"Arguing isn't going to get us anywhere. In fact, it's only going to make things worse," she said before standing up, "When he calls to tell me where he has Hope. I'm the only one going."

"What? N-" Klaus began but she cut him off.

"This is my fault, Klaus. I have to fix this."

"You don't know what he's capable of. What if he hurts you?"

"You have to trust that I can take care of myself."

Before Klaus could protest anymore, her phone rang.

She quickly picked it up when she saw that it was Liam, "Where is she?"

"Did you really think it was going to be that easy?"

"What do you want?"

"Meet me a-"

"Wait," Maya said, looking over at Stefan, Elena, and Klaus who were clearly listening in, "text me the address, I'll be there."

She hung up the phone and turned to them, "Watch Tyler, keep him safe."

I grabbed my keys off the kitchen counter and started to walk out but Klaus stopped me, "Maya."

"Let me go save our daughter."

He nodded reluctantly before I left.

Maya entered the empty warehouse discreetly. The musty smell invaded her senses and the soft thud of her feet surely gave her away.

Liam stepped out of the shadows of the room and approached her.

"Where is she?" Maya demanded.

"She's safe, I brought her to the Salvatore house."

"How do I know that for sure?"

"Call them. Speakerphone."

She cautiously pulled out her phone and dialed Stefan's number.

"Maya? Where are you?"

"Is Hope there? Is she safe?"

"Yes, she's safe but-"

"That's all I need to know."

"Tell me where you are and I-"

She hung up.

"What do you want from me?" Maya said, prepared for the worst.

"I need you to send the Salvatore brothers and Klaus Mikaelson a message."

"Which would be?"

"They can't raise Silas."

"You're kidding."

"Do you understand?"

"Yes but-"

"That'll be all."

She furrowed her eyebrows when he turned to leave.

"I thought I could trust you!" Maya shouted angrily.

"That was the plan," a new voice joined.

Maya had never seen her before but she felt familiar. She wasn't scary looking. In fact, they were practically twins.

"Do I know you?"

"No, you don't."

"What's going on? Why do you care about Silas?"

"He's going to kill us all."

"Sounds like a party, can't wait. What does that have to do with my daughter?"

"Compelling Liam to take Hope took awhile. I first learned of this tribrid who was friends with the Salvatore brothers. At first it was nothing until I found out that they were trying to find the cure for vampirism and I knew I had to stop Silas from rising. I then found out that some guy named Liam knocked you up. I weaned him off vervain and then compelled him to take someone who means a lot to you and I'm sure you can figure out the rest. After all, you lived it."

"Why me?"

"Don't give the Salvatore's too much credit. Yes, they may be motivated by love and what not and have that Bennet witch at their side, but let's be honest, the only way they are going to get the cure, is with you."

"So you were willing to hurt a baby?"

"No, that was never going to happen. I'm not that evil," she said with a devilish smirk and placed her hands on the sides of Liam's head, "Him on the other hand..."

"You can't kill him, please," Maya begged.

"I killed your mom too, she was a fighter."

"You killed her?"

"The past is the past."

"I'm going to kill you," Maya shouted angrily, ready to go for it.

"Uh, uh, uh," she said tightening her grip on Liam.

"I can't lose him too."

"Oh sweetheart," she tutted, "he was already gone." The sudden snap of his neck echoed throughout the practically empty room and the sick feeling in Maya's stomach only grew.

"Why...?"

"I needed to send a message. This just makes it even more clear."

Maya shook her head in disbelief, refusing to accept the fact that he was actually gone.

"If you raise Silas, your little wolf's death is the least of your worries," she said before vamp speeding out of the warehouse.
