21 | Why

Hayley and Maya stood in the barn as Kimberley, one of Klaus's hybrids, was attempting to break the sire bond. She ran into the barn and broke a few boards in the process.

"Scream. Let it out. We're at an abandoned farm. No one can hear you for miles," Hayley encouraged.

"Easy for you to say, wolf girl. You never turned twenty times in a row," Kimberley snapped back.

"No, but I watched a bunch of your hybrid friends go through it."

Kimberley fell to the floor and shouted in pain, "Why does it have to be like this? Why break every bone over and over?"

"It's what the sire bond is. When Klaus turned you, you no longer had to turn every full moon. That's why you have to turn so you don't have to feel like you owe him," Maya explained.

"What's in all of this for you two?"

"I want to help you guys, you shouldn't have to do what Klaus says. You deserve free will."

Hayley on the other hand ignored the question, "I don't hear bones cracking."

Tyler entered the barn and spoke, "Caroline bought us another day. Klaus wants to go with her to Miss Mystic Falls tomorrow."

"So, does that mean we're going?"

"Watching Klaus fawn over Caroline at some lame-ass pageant? No thanks."

"Oh, come on!"

"You should go, I mean you might as well, it's at our house, Ty. Plus, you have to keep up your charade," Maya added.

"Guys, like this isn't torture enough?! Can you take it outside?!" Kimberley begged from the floor.

Hayley batted her eyelashes in Tyler's direction and he caved, "Fine, we'll go. Wear a dress."

Tyler left the barn leaving Hayley with a grin on her face.

"I hope you know what you're doing," Maya said as she watched Kimberley turn again.

"What?" Hayley asked looking far too alarmed.

"With Tyler. He loves Caroline and he would never do anything to hurt her intentionally. That doesn't mean he isn't an idiot who makes mistakes."

"I'm not doing anything."

"Yeah, and I'm not pregnant with the devil's baby," Maya said placing a hand on her now showing stomach, "Stop kidding yourself, Hayley."

"Can you finish up here? I have to find a dress," Hayley said before walking out.

Maya turned back to Kimberley, "Two more times and then you can go on a lunch break. I have to get home before Caroline realizes how long I've been gone."

Kimberley let out a groan before she began to turn again. Maya sat on a stack of hay as she waited for the hybrid in front of her to finish the transition.

After the second transition was complete, they parted ways and agreed to meet later tonight after the Miss Mystic event.

Maya made her way home and got dressed. She met up with Liam once she was ready.

"You ready to be introduced to my world?" Maya joked, entangling their arms.

"Depends, will there be cake?" Liam said.

Maya rolled her eyes and they made their way over to a busy Caroline.

"Having fun?" Maya mocked Caroline as she frantically picked up empty glasses.

"Where have you been?" Caroline shouted in her usual chaotic state, "I have been running around putting this together and you just disappeared!"

"Sorry, I had some business to attend to," Maya said shooting Caroline a calm down look.

"Everything is falling apart, nothing is going as I planned."

"Caroline, this is beautiful, you did a fantastic job."

"Will you guys pick up the tempo?!" Caroline snapped her fingers at the band, "This is a pageant, not a funeral."

She let out an exasperated sigh as Klaus approached them.

"And how am I doing?" Klaus said with the usual smug look plastered on his face.

"You're...perfect," Caroline began causing Klaus to smile, "Just so beyond annoying, I can't even look at you."

Maya cleared her throat uncomfortably before excusing herself and Liam.

"What was that about?" he asked looking down at Maya with furrowed eyebrows.

"It's complicated."

"Right..." he said as Caroline made her way up the stage.

"Hi, everyone, I'm Caroline Forbes," Caroline's voice boomed over the yard, "As the reigning Miss Mystic Falls, it is my honor to introduce this year's Miss Mystic Court."

After a short round of applause, Caroline continued, "We begin the procession with Valerie Fell accompanied by Dylan Clark."

With each announcement, everyone clapped.

"Next, we have Amber Wolvertine accompanied by Hector Lindsay."

"Katherine Wilson accompanied by Eric Hanson."

"And finally, we have a last minute entry, April Young accompanied by Jeremy Gilbert."

April began to walk down the steps but stopped to look around for Jeremy. Caroline began looking around for Jeremy as well but kept a huge smile on her face. Matt walked up to where the escorts were lined up and held out his arm for April. Everyone applauded and April let out a sigh of relief. She walked down the remainder of the stairs with a smile and took Matt's arm.

Caroline continued to look around, worried, but stopped and smiled. April and Matt walk to the dance floor and face each other.

"Hey, what's with the last minute escort change? Where is Jeremy?" Caroline asked as Maya and Liam made their way over.

"I'm calling him right now," Elena said pulling out her phone as Damon joined them. "He's not picking up."

"Do the math. Emo teen, open bar, it's fine," Damon said brushing it off as nothing.

"Matt said that Jeremy's been having nightmares about killing vampires and he's been hiding it from me."

"Relax, I'm sure he's fine."

"I don't know. I have a bad feeling."

"If I'm not worried, you shouldn't be worried. Let it go. I'll go look for him."

"Okay."

"Okay, you go home, Maya and I will start asking around here," Caroline said.

"Maybe Damon's right. Maybe he grabbed a bottle from the bar and snuck off to the woods."

"No, Damon is never right. Damon is sneaky and manipulative and rude, but he's never right. How can you not see that?"

"I don't know, but why do I think that you won't hesitate to tell me?"

"Fine, friendtervention. I think your so-called 'feelings' for Damon are really starting to cloud your judgment and I don't like it."

Klaus then joined, standing in the place where Damon had previously stood as Caroline continued.

"And the thought of you two together really makes me want to barf."

"Caroline," Maya said in surprise.

"Easy, love, you're making a scene," Klaus said trying to stop things from escalating.

"Wow, Caroline, thank you for making this very difficult time so much easier," Elena said before walking away.

"How did I become the bad guy?" Caroline asked the three who remained.

"Do you realize how hard it is to go through what she is going through?"

"What?" Caroline asked slightly surprised at how angry Maya sounded.

"She is having an internal struggle. She was, maybe still is, in love with Stefan, and she had no idea how she felt about Damon but when she turned, her emotions were enhanced and she had to figure out her feelings and she finally did. And now, because it's not the choice you would have made, you're getting mad at her? How about instead of acting like an inconsiderate bitch, you support her and allow her to make decisions for herself?"

"I-I," Caroline began but couldn't form the words she wanted so desperately to say.

"Let's go inside," Liam said, grabbing Maya's hand.

Maya relaxed slightly at his touch and nodded slowly and they made their way inside where they found Damon.

Maya, using her vamp-hearing, listened in on his phone call with Stefan.

"Please don't tell me that you've roped Jeremy into a world of crazy," Damon said.

"I had no choice. Elena needs the cure," Stefan argued.

"Oh right, so you can turn her back into the girl that is still in love with you."

"You know, I get why you wouldn't want to believe it Damon, but she isn't herself anymore."

"Of course you would think that. Leave it alone, Stefan," Damon said before hanging up and turning to see Maya and Liam.

"Where is he?" Maya said, growing angrier. The chandelier above them began to shake and the lights flickered.

The anger that Maya had been bottling up was fizzing over and she couldn't control it.

"Maya-" Damon began but she cut him off.

"Where is he?!" Maya shouted and Damon went flying backwards and the chandelier fell down, barely missing him.

Maya let out a gasp of surprise and covered her mouth, "Oh my god, Damon, I'm so sorry."

Klaus, Caroline, Tyler, and Hayley seemed to hear the commotion and came inside.

"What the-" Hayley said looking at the scene. Damon sat against the wall across the room, still out of it. The floor was covered in shards of chandelier and the only light in the room was coming from outside.

"Get her out of here," Klaus said to Liam as Maya stared at the room in shock.

"Oh my god..." Maya repeated again.

"Let's go," Liam said, touching Maya's shoulders gently but she pulled away.

"Stay here, I-I'm gonna go."

"What?" he asked confused.

"I can't hurt anyone else," she said before vamp-speeding away.

"Wai-" Liam began but it was too late, she was already gone.

Damon stood up weakly, wiping the shards of glass off his pants. "Tyler, close off this area, Caroline, Hayley, and Liam, start cleaning up, Klaus go after her, I have to deal with my idiotic brother."

"I need to go help her," Liam said.

"You can't. She can't control her magic, meaning she could kill you and that would break her. Klaus on the other hand, can't die."

"Bu-" he began.

"He's right Liam, you can't help her, not this time," Tyler said as he came back from blocking off the area.

Klaus nodded before vamp-speeding after Maya, following her scent.

He had made his way to the town square, where the scent stopped. He began looking around to see if he could find her when he finally looked up and saw the outline of a person sitting on top of the clock tower.

"It's a beautiful view from up here," Klaus said causing Maya to jump slightly.

"What are you doing here?" Maya said not looking at him.

"I could ask you the same thing."

"I come up here when I need a break from something, in this case, a break from me."

He walked over and took a seat next to her, "They're worried about you."

"I know they are, but I'm more worried about what I could do to them. Obviously they are too considering they sent the indestructible Original after me."

"Liam wanted to come, but your brother convinced him otherwise."

"Well, sending you only pisses me off more. You should go."

"I think I'll stay."

"Why? I don't need your pity."

"It's not pity."

"Yeah, right."

"Why do you think it is?"

"What else could it be? You caring? Doubtful."

"I do care about you."

"No, you don't."

"I do."

"So you care about me so much that you couldn't even bare the thought of me having your child?" I ask with a scoff, turning to look at him.

"It wasn't like that. It's just something I needed time to process."

"You could have at least said that."

"I should have."

"But you didn't. You may have saved my life but that doesn't mean I don't hate you," Maya said before checking the time and standing up, "I have to go."

"Right, goodbye love," he said looking up at her from where he sat before getting up.

"Please, just don't call me that," she said before walking away.

Kimberly laid on the floor in exhaustion after transforming into a wolf for what felt like the millionth time.

"Tell me it's over, Maya. I really don't think I can do this anymore," she begged.

Maya knelt down in front of her, "It's over, Kim. Good job. We're one step closer to ending this."

She smiled weakly before Maya stood up and texted Hayley and Tyler, letting them know Kim is no longer sired. One hybrid closer to their complete freedom from Klaus.
