Chapter 1: Not Your Ordinary Day

It was late evening. Bobby and I were in a warehouse and honestly, I couldn't tell you what we were doing. Not after what happened. I had been a hunter for the majority of my life now, and could handle the goriest of encounters. But this, this was different.

It sounded like a big thunderclap and the roof was flipping out and the walls of the warehouse started to shake.

"Wistful thinking, but maybe it's just the wind?" I looked up right as the lights above me busted out. Bobby and I exchanged daring glances and made sure we were armed with the best of the best. If this thing was as heavy duty as we thought, we were going to need it. Within a moment I could not create myself, the doors flew open to reveal a puny man in slacks, a white button up, a suit jacket, tie, and a trench coat. The lights continued to bust all around him. At this I faltered. He looked so harmless. But looks can be deceiving. Bobby and I both fired away, hitting his chest where the bullet wounds should have been fatal. But this man, this...creature...didn't even flinch. Bobby and I looked at each other in disbelief. As he closed in on us, I grabbed the nearest blade.

"Who are you?" I questioned as he circled me.

"I'm the one who gripped you tightly and raised you from perdition."He looked at me with a steady, firm glare.

"Yeah, thanks for that." I returned the favored. Staring him up and down. I could probably take him. With guttural force, I drove the blade into his heart. That would kill just about anything. Like I said...just about. The man looked down, then stared into my eyes and slowly pulled the blade out of his chest, dropping it to the floor. I could not believe my eyes. Every method of straight up killing failed. Bobby raised a bar made of iron and without looking, the man raised an arm to stop it. He grabbed the bar and pulled Bobby close, pressing two fingers to his forehead, causing him to faint. He stared at Bobby's limp body, then turned to me.

"We need to talk, Dean...alone." He looked between Bobby and I with an almost concerned expression. I was dumbfounded he knew my name and wasn't totally trying to kill me.

I leaned down to check Bobby's pulse as the man/creature moved across the room. I looked at him. He was reading some pages of what I think was my father's journal.

"Your friend is alive."

"Who are you?"

"Castiel."

"Yeah, I figured that much. I mean, what are you?" I said in a gruff tone. This monotone son of a bitch was getting on my nerves real quick.

"...I'm an angel of the Lord." What? Had I heard him right? He had to be joking. Who did this guy think he was?

"Get the hell out of here. There's no such thing." I rose up from my kneeling position beside Bobby to meet him face to face as he came towards me.

"This is your problem, Dean. You have no faith." I gave him a questioning look as lightning flashed and thunder rolled. His translucent black wings spread out, changing my questioning look to one of awe. Then I remembered.

"Some angel you are. You burned out that poor woman's eyes." Pamela had been a good friend of Bobby's and a damn good physic. Castiel looked down.

"I warned her not to spy on my true form. It can be...overwhelming to humans. So can my real voice, you already knew that." He was right. That ear splitting noise was this angel's voice?

"In the gas station and the motel. That was you talking?" I stated more than asked. He nodded so I added, "Buddy, next time, lower the volume!"

"It was my mistake. Certain people, special people, can percieve my true visage. I thought you would be one of them. I was wrong." Damn straight he was. Jesus...after that I thought I wasn't going to be able to hear again.

"And what visage are you in now, huh? What? Holy tax accountant?" He surveyed his outfit and looked me square in the face.

"This? This is a vessel." Wait...like what a demon would use?

"You're possessing some poor bastard?" I thought angels were supposed to be holy and all the crap.

"He...he's a devout man. He actually prayed for this." Who the hell prays to be possessed? This Castiel is a strange one.

"Look pal, I'm not buying what you're selling. So who are you really?" Castiel tilted his head in confusion.

"I already told you." Of course. Stubborn monotone son of a bitch.

"Right. And why would and angel...rescue me from hell?" Castiel got closer and as the wind blew, I realized how good he smelled. It was weird but I didn't think about it. My mistake.

"Good things do happen, Dean." I almost laughed at that. Staring into his piercing blue eyes, I couldn't muster the strength.

"Not in my experience." He titled his head again. It reminded me of a cute little kitten. Wait...what the hell? Back to reality. I should never have been saved. I didn't deserve it and I'm sure everyone would be better off without me.

"What's the matter?" His eyes widened as he read my thoughts. "You don't think you deserved to be saved." I swallowed hard.

"Why'd you do it?"

"Because God commanded it. Because we have work for you."

I tensed my jaw. What could heaven possibly want with me? I looked at him with disbelief as he nodded and disappeared before my eyes. Bobby woke up a few minutes later. I hadn't moved. I was still staring where the angel had just stood.

"What....happened?"

Honestly? I couldn't answer him. Not now. Not today.
