[S1E2]- Charlotte DiLaurentis

As Emily, Spencer, Hanna and Aria sat in the lobby at The Radley, they couldn't help but feel out of place.

"God can you believe how... great this place looks?" Spencer assessed.

"You'd never know this place was a sanitarium," Aria agreed.

Hanna took a sip of her drink. "I still get weird vibes."

"Agreed," Emily said.

"So..." Hanna looked at all the girls. "Any of you happen to have significant others? Because I'd like to know I'm not the only single one."

"I don't have time to sleep, much less a boyfriend," Spencer joked.

"Same," Emily answered. "About the time thing, not the boyfriend."

Hanna laughed. "Yeah, we got that."

Aria seemed to be the only one who was spoken for.

"So what's his name?" Spencer asked.

"Liam," Aria said. "He works at the same publishing house as me."

"Anything serious?" Hanna wondered.

Aria sipped her drink with a smile. "I'd like think so."

The girls gushed with Aria as she revealed their history and Emily found herself happy for her friend. After Aria and Ezra had split, things hadn't been easy. But just like herself, Aria learned to move on. Emily couldn't believe how much all four of them had grown.

"What about you, Em?" Hanna nudged her. "Did you meet anyone worth mentioning?"

Emily blushed. "Not particularly. But there was this cute Italian girl..."

Now that they were loose with the help of alcohol, Emily was enjoying herself. She wished she could find this release without it, but for now it would have to do.

A few hours and many drinks later, the girls were determined to shut down the bar.

"Okay, but how long has Alison and Elliot been dating?" Spencer questioned. "I just feel like the engagement was out of the blue."

"I guess when you know, you just know," Hanna claimed.

"I mean, did she ever mention him to anyone before today?" Aria asked.

All four girls shook their heads. Emily found this to be... odd. Yet, she knew thinking about it too much would be useless. Alison wasn't stupid. And Emily was sure it had taken a long time for Elliot to win Ali over. Right?

"Can we not talk about Ali?" Emily slurred.

Okay, maybe she was a little too drunk. She knew the other three noticed her change of mood.

"Yeah, sure Em," Hanna obliged.

Before the four women knew it, they were readying themselves for bed in Hanna's suite. The day had been long, and the 2012 class reunion was tomorrow. So, dealing with a hangover wouldn't be ideal.

But even when Emily was hammered, she couldn't fall asleep. There were too many things racing through her mind. And to top it all off, her mouth was parched. She needed some water.

She recalled seeing a vending machine down the hall so she grabbed a few dollars and headed out the room.

The hallway seemed to be twisting and turning before her eyes as she tried not to stumble. She cursed herself for getting this drunk. Lately, it had been hard to control herself.

She made it to the vending machine and bought a water and nearly chugged the entire thing as she walked back towards Hanna's room. But when she made it to the door the elevator dinged and caught her attention.

And out stepped Elliot.

He turned and headed in the opposite direction of Emily. She blinked and tried her best to focus. Then he opened the door to a room down the hall and disappeared inside.

Had Emily really seen that? And if so, what the hell was Elliot doing staying here at Radley? She assumed he would be staying at Alison's place by now, considering they were engaged and all.

She let herself into the room and threw herself back onto the bed, but her thoughts were swarming even more now. Should she text Alison and see if everything was okay? Had they fought? Had Alison kicked him out?

Before she could reach for her phone her eyes became heavy. Emily rolled onto her side and felt the sweet sensation of sleep, and before she knew it, Alison was just a distant thought.

* * *

"Are you nervous?" Emily asked Paige.

"Not particularly," Paige admitted. "I'm actually glad you invited me."

Emily smiled. "Well, it just felt right."

Paige eyed her from the passenger seat and Emily could feel her cheeks heat up in response. Even after years of being apart, she couldn't deny she still felt something for Paige. And at least she knew her feelings were reciprocated.

"How have you been?" Paige wondered. "We didn't really get to talk yesterday."

Emily knew Paige was referring to her father, and it still hurt. A lot. But Paige had tried to be there when Emily needed her. They shared something special.

"It's been hard," Emily confessed. "Coming back here makes it harder... but I can't deny that it's gotten easier since it happened."

That's when Paige's hand caressed hers.

"He'd be so proud of you."

Emily couldn't help but feel a small pang of heart ache. She missed her dad so much.

Emily's car rolled up in the parking lot of Rosewood High. She wanted to feel nostalgic but she really just felt nervous. There were times where coming here had been the most painful thing she could think of. And five years hadn't done much to make her forget. She tried to remember the good times.

"Although, I think it's kind of lame they're having it in the gym," Paige said.

Emily couldn't help but agree.

They walked in together and spotted familiar faces including Mona, some people who had been on the swim team, Hanna, Aria and Spencer and, in the middle, Alison herself.

Big blue eyes met brown and Emily tried not to seem so caught off guard. Why hadn't Alison mentioned she was coming to the reunion last night? Suddenly she regretted inviting Paige.

"I didn't know Alison would be here," Paige admitted.

"Me neither," Emily defended.

They would be civil with each other, right?

They paced up to the four girls and everyone welcomed Paige warmly, except for Alison who was confused as to why she was here. And even more so, why Emily had invited her.

"Alison," Paige broke the ice.

"Paige," Alison answered. "It was nice of Emily to invite you."

Paige couldn't help but look over to Emily, who was sweating invisible bullets.

"It was," Paige agreed. "I didn't think I'd ever have the chance to be back here."

"Why are you?" Alison pressed. "Back in town?"

"The swim coach position is up for grabs," Paige replied. "Figured it wouldn't hurt to apply."

This was news to Emily, who had assumed Paige would want to work anywhere besides Rosewood. Looks like she was wrong.

"Oh." Alison was displeased. "Well good luck."

As the tension thickened Emily couldn't help but remember the memory of seeing Elliot last night. Had she been too drunk to realize it wasn't him? Or was there something weird going on?

"Where's Elliot?" Emily found herself asking Alison.

Alison smiled at his name. "He had to leave for a conference in New York. He should be back by Monday."

So, either that wasn't Elliot at The Radley, or he had lied to Alison about where he was going. This had bad news written all over it.

Alison on the other hand couldn't get past the fact that Paige had been Emily's plus one. She had hoped Emily would find someone better, but if Paige made her happy...

Then she watched Paige nudge Emily playfully and gave her that... look. Alison's skin crawled. Okay, no, she wasn't okay with it.

Emily couldn't help but think it was weird being here. It was as if everyone had changed but stayed the same. Maybe that was Rosewood High's special talent. Deception.

Paige had wandered off and reunited with old friends, which gave Emily some time with the other four.

"I'm gonna go talk to principal Hackett," Alison said, dismissing herself. "I'll be right back."

Then she left the group. Emily took this as her chance to bring up last night.

"I think I saw Elliot last night," Emily confessed. "He lied to Ali."

Spencer, Hanna and Aria looked at her in confusion.

"You think you saw him?" Aria wondered. "Are you sure?"

Was Emily sure? She had been wasted last night... but she would recognize Elliot even then, right?

Emily nodded. "I almost positive."

"Well we need a little more than an almost," Spencer said. "If you're gonna tell Ali, we need a solid yes."

At this Emily crossed her arms in defeat. "Can't we check the security cameras?"

Everyone looked at Hanna.

"No," Hanna declined. "I'm not doing this. We're not in high school anymore."

"Please, Han?" Emily plead. "This feels really weird."

Emily knew what this looked like to the girls, but she tried not to let it bother her. Something felt... wrong, and Alison needed to know. If her fiancé was already lying to her, that should be a red flag to everyone. But they needed solid proof.

Hanna contemplated for a while before agreeing. "Fine. I'll go home and steal my mom's keys and we'll go tonight. But you owe me."

Then they spotted Ali making her way back over to them. She seemed giddy. What was going on?

"I just got a call from the judge. The hearing is at noon," Alison revealed. "Charlotte could be released as early as Tuesday morning if the hearing goes well."

It was all happening so fast. Could Emily do this for Ali? After everything? It seemed impossible right now. She hadn't allowed herself to think about the hearing since talking with Ali last night at her house, but maybe it was time to start.

That's when principal Hackett approached the five girls with a grin, interrupting the serious moment. Emily was grateful.

"Emily," he greeted. "Just the person I was hoping to see tonight."

Emily smiled. "Principal Hackett."

"I don't know if you're aware, but the swim coach position is open," he said. "And I'd love for you to apply."

"Yeah, Paige mentioned that to me," Emily confessed.

"You should come by and fill out the application," Hackett suggested. "If you're interested, of course."

"Sure," Emily decided.

Then Hackett gave another smile and left the girls alone.

"That was random," Hanna claimed.

"Yeah," Emily agreed.

"Are you gonna apply?" Alison couldn't help but ask.

If it were up to Ali, she'd much rather have Emily working as the swim coach than Paige.

"I'm not sure," Emily admitted.

Emily hadn't planned to stay here in Rosewood, but a permanent job like this would be great. Plus, she could finish her degree over at Hollis. Suddenly she was contemplating the offer.

But it would all depend on the result of Charlotte's hearing whether she stayed or not.

The reunion seemed to end on a weird note, so the girls headed out. After Alison disappeared from the parking lot the other four hung around to discuss Charlotte's release.

Emily looked at Paige and offered her the car keys. "Could you give us a second?"

Paige took them and smiled. "Sure."

Once she was gone the atmosphere became serious.

"I don't know about you guys, but I would not feel safe if Charlotte was released," Aria confessed.

"Ali might've said she was better, but from what I remember she was a pretty convincing liar," Spencer included.

Emily somewhat agreed with her friends, but there was the small ounce of sympathy she had for Ali. Other than Elliot, she was alone. Jason and her father weren't around, or so it seemed. Charlotte and Elliot were all she had.

That's when Hanna, Aria and Spencer looked at Emily.

"How do you feel about this?" Hanna asked.

Emily hated the spotlight. She shifted uncomfortably.

"I-I don't know," she said. "I mean, it's been five years. Charlotte must be better by now. They wouldn't consider releasing her after what she pulled if she wasn't."

Emily watched the reactions of her friends and noticed her comment resonated with them. She just didn't want them to think she was trying to convince them like Ali had tried to do.

Hanna crossed her arms. "Well I don't care if Charlotte's released, but if I get anything weird I'll personally come back to Rosewood and kick her ass."

"Agreed," Spencer said. "But I'd like to believe Ali would monitor her with a close eye."

The conversation about Charlotte seemed to be over, but Emily still needed to check those cameras at Radley.

"Before we decide anything about Charlotte, we need to confirm that was Elliot I saw last night," Emily suggested. "If there is something weird going on with him, Alison needs to know."

Spencer, Aria and Hanna agreed and headed back over to Radley. Emily dropped Paige off and joined them in the lobby of the hotel.

"Spencer and Aria will keep a look out," Hanna ordered.

Emily followed her to the back office.

Hanna used her mom's stolen key and unlocked the door. She walked up to the computer and got to work.

Emily leaned in and watched the surveillance from last night closely. She saw herself stumble down the hallway in embarrassment, and then back toward the room. That's when someone stepped out the elevator.

"There," Emily said. "That's him."

Hanna paused the video and zoomed in on the man's face. Emily had been right. It was definitely Elliot.

"Well..." Hanna backed away. "That doesn't seem good."

"Do you think he checked in or was just meeting someone?" Emily asked.

"I can check the books."

Hanna clicked a few documents on the computer and pulled up the check-in spread sheet. Emily scanned the screen and found Elliot Rollins. He had checked in not long after the girls had gone up to Hanna's room.

"He's definitely staying here," Hanna said. "But why?"

Emily shrugged. "I don't know."

Hanna turned off the computer. "Well, regardless, we need to get out of here. The last thing I need is for my mom to catch me in here."

They exited the office and met back with Spencer and Aria.

"It was definitely Elliot," Emily stated. "He checked in not long after we went up to Hanna's suite."

"Great, so her fiancé is lying to her and her mentally unstable sister will possibly be released back into the real world," Spencer panicked.

"Is this really our business?" Aria wondered. "The whole Elliot thing?"

Emily folded her arms. "If we knew Liam was lying to you, would you want us to tell you?"

Aria just swallowed her guilt.

"I have a bad feeling this might have something to do with Charlotte," Spencer assessed. "Did you guys see the way Ali and Elliot looked at each other when we asked how they met?"

Emily hadn't believed anyone else had seen that.

"I saw it too," Emily confessed. "Either Ali's lying or she's not telling us the whole truth."

"And yet she wants us to do her a favor," Aria jabbed.

"More like do Charlotte a favor," Spencer included.

"Do you think Elliot is Charlotte's doctor?" Hanna wondered.

"That would explain why she didn't want to tell us the truth about their relationship," Spencer included. "Because dating your sister's psychiatrist is highly inappropriate."

There were too many weird things going on for Emily not to feel suspicious of Ali's plans. Did Ali know Elliot was staying in Radley and had just lied to them about the conference thing? Or was Elliot up to something? The pieces weren't adding up, and that on top of the whole Charlotte thing... it just didn't seem right.

"I have a bad feeling about this," Emily confessed.

Even though she wanted to make Ali happy, she had to look at the bigger picture. If Ali or the rest of them were in danger... well, their safety trumped Alison's happiness. No matter what.

And Monday morning, along with her friends, Emily would voice how she truly felt about Charlotte DiLaurentis.
