[S1E19] - Hot Water
As Spencer replayed the video of Melissa confessing to everyone in her barn, the atmosphere in the room turned dark. Emily had filled everyone in about what she and Aria had found in Archer's apartment, and Mona had revealed that Wren had known Archer as Elliot.
"Charlotte gave that video to Archer for a reason," Hanna said. "And what other reason would it be than to blackmail Melissa?"
"We don't know that for sure, Hanna," Spencer defended. "For all we know Charlotte was just preparing to play The Game again."
Everyone fell silent. Emily knew this was hard for Spencer. This was her sister they were talking about. Someone who had only been protecting her when she made that tape. But if Melissa had played a part in Archer and Charlotte's death, -A wanted them to go down for it.
And if the women didn't satisfy -A soon, Emily was convinced they would all take their place in orange jumpsuits.
"You need to talk to your sister," Alison told Spencer. "Because -A is going to start targeting the rest of us if we just keep sitting on this information."
Spencer ran her hands through her hair. "Alright. I'll talk to her."
Hanna, Aria, Mona and Alison took this as their cue to leave, but Emily found herself pitying Spencer. Maybe she could hang back and give her words of reassurance.
"Em?" Alison called.
"I'm coming," Emily said. "I just need a moment with Spencer."
Alison nodded and left the barn as Emily took her place next to Spencer on the couch.
"Spence," Emily said. "We're not saying Melissa killed them, and we don't want to turn on your sister."
"It sure feels that way."
Emily sighed. "The stuff we've found... yeah, it looks bad. And I don't wanna believe Melissa is capable of doing such a heinous thing. I mean, Aria and I saw the crime scene and..."
Spencer finally looked at her.
"It was horrible," Emily said.
Both friends looked at each other and then back at Melissa's face on Spencer's computer screen.
"I almost destroyed the drive," Spencer admitted. "If I did that, it would destroy Melissa's motive. It would destroy her as a suspect all together..."
Emily watched Spencer.
"But I didn't." Spencer linked her hands. "I didn't destroy it because I need her to tell me she didn't kill Charlotte and Archer. And I need the flash drive to do that because Melissa would never tell me the truth unless I had something on her."
The sadness in Spencer's voice made Emily choke up. This wasn't a fair nor easy decision. But for all they knew, Melissa didn't do a thing and they were looking at the wrong person. No one was sure yet. Not until Spencer talked to Melissa.
Suddenly the front door opened, and when Emily expected to see one of her friends, instead it was Melissa.
Everything seemed to happen in slow-fast motion after that. As if no one could react fast enough, but every reaction and movement was noticed by Emily.
She stood immediately a Melissa's arrival.
"Spencer, mom said that-"
Melissa saw Spencer's laptop. Spencer slammed it shut. Melissa looked at Emily and then her sister, who stood next to Emily. Melissa dropped the stack of paper's she was holding.
"Where did you get that?" Melissa asked with a trembling voice.
"Melissa-"
"Spencer why do you have that?!" Melissa stormed over to the coffee table where the laptop sat. "That's the tape! Spencer why the hell is that here?!"
Emily could feel the atmosphere thickening. Spencer didn't know what to do. Melissa's reaction had caught them both off guard.
"I found it," Emily blurted. "I found the tape and I brought it to Spencer."
Melissa's dark eyes found Emily's. She could feel her heart in her head. She was having difficulty breathing. This wasn't the confrontation she had expected.
"You found it?" Melissa repeated.
"She found it in Elliot Rollins' apartment," Spencer included. "And you're lucky she found it before the police because they're combing through that apartment as we speak."
Melissa looked like a deer caught in the headlights. She couldn't blame Melissa for being scared and furious at the fact that Emily and Spencer had that tape. This was something that was supposed to disappear years ago, but had now resurfaced.
"Melissa," Spencer started. "I need you to tell me the truth."
"The truth about what?" Melissa fumed.
"About why you visited Charlotte in Radley all those years ago," Spencer said. "And why you and Wren moved all the way from London for him to work at Welby, only to quit months later and recommend Elliot to be her doctor."
Melissa shook her head.
"And why you lied to me and the police about where you were the night Elliot and Charlotte were murdered," Spencer finished. "You need to tell me because someone is threatening me and my friends and will make us go down for it if we don't find who really murdered them."
Everything Spencer was saying seemed to click in Melissa's mind. She had been a victim of Charlotte's games too. It hadn't just been Emily and her friends. And by the way Spencer was talking, Emily could tell Melissa knew it had started again. The messages, the threats... -A was back and that scared the hell out of Melissa.
"I visited Charlotte in Radley because Wren told me she had mentioned a tape," Melissa admitted. "I panicked and thought it was the one I left you. So I visited, but when I was talking to her I realized she had no idea what I was talking about or that the tape I made you even existed."
Emily and Spencer listened intently.
"Come to find out, she was a really convincing liar," Melissa said. "Wren and I moved to London after that but the work there wasn't great for Wren. One of his friends in Philly contacted him about a job at Welby. At the time neither one of us even knew that Radley was no longer a sanitarium or that Charlotte was being treated at Welby."
Melissa took a deep breath. "Wren was assigned to treat Charlotte and claimed that she seemed better. This guy would come around, Elliot, and he acted like a boyfriend but Wren and I thought that was weird considering she was locked up in Welby. When would she have met someone like Elliot?"
"Would Elliot ever come around when Ali visited Charlotte?" Emily asked.
"No," Melissa said. "Wren said he would only come alone."
Spencer and Emily exchanged glances.
"Then out of nowhere, Charlotte threatened-"
"Melissa," someone called from the door.
Everyone looked up to see none other than Wren himself, looking suspicious as ever, in Emily's opinion.
"Wren," Melissa answered. "I was just uh, telling Spencer what my mom told me."
That's when Emily felt it enter the room. The tension. The underlying threat of Wren Kingston. As if Melissa was afraid of him. Spencer had to feel it too.
Wren knelt and picked up the papers Melissa had dropped. When they were all collected, he placed them onto the coffee table next to Spencer's laptop.
"Well, why was the paperwork on the floor?" Wren asked.
The three women were silent. Emily felt as if she was in grave danger. Bumps on her skin began to rise. There was something seriously off, and she didn't know how to navigate this situation.
"I-I..." Melissa stammered.
"We should go," Wren suggested. "It was nice seeing you Spencer, Emily."
The last look Melissa gave Spencer and Emily said a million words. It was a plea for help. It was a confession that Melissa was in danger. That if Spencer and Emily didn't help her, she would never be able to finish her story.
When the door closed, Emily looked at Spencer.
"You saw that too, right?" Emily asked. "You felt that tension?"
"Wren," Spencer muttered. "It's Wren."
Emily furrowed her brow in confusion.
"I know when my sister is guilty," Spencer said. "I know the look on her face, and that wasn't the look of guilt. That was the look of pure fear."
Spencer grabbed the flash drive and stormed over to the sink. Emily couldn't react fast enough to stop her.
"Spencer what are you-!?"
But it was too late. Spencer threw the flash drive into the garbage disposal and turned it on. The sound of grating metal filled their ears. Emily and Spencer stared at the drain as the flash drive was destroyed.
Spencer flipped off the disposal.
"Why the hell did you do that?" Emily panicked.
"My sister didn't murder Charlotte and Archer," Spencer claimed. "But I think Wren did and she's somehow involved."
"Yeah but how are you so sure?!" Emily asked. "Don't you realize that was a motive that you just destroyed!"
"That may have been a motive but it wasn't the motive that killed them." Spencer leaned on the counter. "Melissa's in trouble. I saw it in her face."
"I saw it too," Emily confessed. "But why are you so sure Wren is the suspect?"
"Because..." Spencer stood straight. "I'm a Hastings. I can smell fear. Wren was scared when he caught Melissa talking to us. That's why he was in a rush to leave. It's why he had to point out paperwork on the ground. It was an intimidation tactic."
Spencer's phone rang out from the coffee table. It was a text message.
Spencer picked it up and read: "Do not respond. We will talk tomorrow. Promise. – Melissa"
"You don't think Wren's going to hurt her?" Emily wondered.
"No," Spencer said. "That would make him look even worse. But until I can talk to Melissa..."
Emily nodded. She knew there was something going on but they were at another standstill. Hopefully -A didn't feel the need to push anytime soon. They needed a breather.
"Do you want me to stay...?" Emily asked.
Spencer shook her head. "No, it's fine. Toby's coming over after his shift."
Emily raised her brow.
Spencer shrugged. "We're kind of... trying again."
Emily found herself happy for Spencer.
"And...?"
Spencer blushed. "It's going well."
Emily grabbed her purse and smiled at her friend. "Well, then I guess I won't stick around."
Before she could make it to the door Spencer called her back.
"Emily?"
She turned.
"Yeah?" she asked.
Spencer had something on the tip of her tongue, and for a moment it looked as if she wanted to ask about...
But instead Spencer shook her head. "Never mind. Not important." She smiled. "Thank you for sticking around."
Emily smiled. "Goodnight Spencer."
Then Emily left and remembered tomorrow she would accompany Alison to her first appointment. She sent Ali a quick text to confirm.
"What time should I be at our house?"
Alison didn't take long to answer. "9:00?"
Emily smiled. "Sounds good. See you tomorrow morning."
She climbed into her car and looked down the street at Alison's house. The bedroom light was still on. Emily felt compelled to just walk over and ask to stay the night, but felt that was overstepping.
Alison sent another text. "Goodnight Emily."
"Goodnight Alison."
Then Emily made her way home with a small smile on her lips.
