[S1E18] - What Goes Around, Comes Around

Emily and Aria cautiously paced through the apartment hallway in search for Archer's hotel room. Emily wasn't proud about what they had done, but when you're desperate, you'd do pretty much anything.

"Do you think twenty dollars was enough to keep the manager quiet?" Emily asked.

"I slipped him my number too." Aria paced besides Emily. "Well, the number to Imperial Gardens. I hope he likes moo-shu..."

They found the room Emily and Alison had found last night and Aria shoved the key into the lock.

When the women stepped into the apartment Emily couldn't help but gag to herself. This was where Archer – Elliot – had lived away from Alison's?

It smelt like sour milk and moth balls. Not only was his trash overflowing, but so was the sink. Full of dirty dishes. Emily was convinced there was mold growing on them.

"What a dump," Emily observed. She moved further into the apartment. "It's like Rollins literally had two different personalities."

"Yeah, or someone else was living here."

"Well, whoever it is a slob," Emily said. "The sink is disgusting."

Emily and Aria browsed around the room.

"What exactly are we looking for?" Aria wondered.

"Anything, really," Emily answered.

Emily continued to eye the sink. For some reason, she couldn't believe this mess was natural. It almost seemed as if it were a... cover up. But if that were the case, what was he hiding?

As she approached the sink full, she realized it was full of water. No one in their right mind would think to search the sink. At least not immediately. Emily reached into the murky water and found the drain.

"Are you putting your hands in there?" Aria asked in disgust.

Emily turned to face her. "You're the one sitting on the bed."

Aria looked back and stood from where she sat.

That's when Emily felt something touch her fingers. She reached further into the drain and realized this wasn't supposed to be there.

"There's something at the bottom," Emily said.

"What is that?"

Emily found a good grip on what she was searching or and revealed a plastic bag with something inside. She shook it off and studied it.

It was passports.

"Elliot – Archer – wasn't a slob." Emily looked at Aria. "This mess was a cover."

They made their way to the couch to study what they had found. Emily took out the passports and examined them. There was one for Charlotte and one for Archer. Except they had different names. Emily realized both of them most likely had identity crises.

"A passport for Charlotte and one for Archer, plus some plane tickets," Emily said. "But why would they leave this behind if they were running away?"

Aria leaned forward. "Unless they just never made it here to get them."

"You think they were on their way back here when they were murdered?"

"Maybe," Aria claimed. "Thomas Mill Road is only a few streets over."

That's when Emily realized there was something else in the bag. It was small, and wrapped in an extra layer of plastic. Was that a...?

She pulled it out. "It's a flash drive."

"For what?"

"I don't know." Emily examined it. "It doesn't have a label."

"Well, hang on to it," Aria suggested. "Until we can get our hands on a computer."

Emily slipped the drive into the chest pocket of her button down and stood. What else could they look for?

That's when they heard footsteps on the outside of the apartment door. Aria and Emily exchanged frantic glances as Emily rushed to put the chain lock. As soon as she did the door flew open and Aria and Emily pressed their backs against the opposing wall.

When the door didn't open, three loud bangs made the two women jump in fear.

"Open up! Rosewood PD. Open up," the voice ordered. "I know you're in there."

Emily felt her heart jump into her throat as she tried not to panic. She found a peek latch and undid it, allowing herself to peer outside.

And there stood Toby, eyeing them from the other side.

"Toby?" Emily gasped.

They let him inside as all three of them stood in confusion.

"You wanna tell me why you're here?" Toby asked.

"Last night, when Alison and I followed Mary... we found a slip of paper with this address on it," Emily revealed. "We wanted to see if we could find anything."

Toby eyed his friends. "Do you have this slip of paper?"

Aria and Emily looked at each other.

Aria finally fessed up and handed Toby the slip of paper. Then everyone was at another standstill.

"Wait," Emily said. "Why are you here?"

Toby planted his hands on his hips. "Spencer called me and said she was worried about you two going to the apartment so I told her I would check it out. But looks like you beat me to it." He eyed both Emily and Aria. "How did you get in here?"

Emily crossed her arms. "You don't wanna know."

Toby held up his hands. "You're right. I don't." Then he looked around. "Did you touch anything?"

Emily squirmed. "Um..."

Aria fessed up again and revealed what they had found on the coffee table. Toby eyed it and seemed highly disappointed in the situation. He rubbed his eyes.

"You got five minutes before I call it in," Toby ordered.

Emily and Aria wasted no time grabbing their things and leaving Archer's apartment. Although they had left the passports and plane tickets, the flash drive still sat safely in Emily's pocket. They had no idea what was on it, so leaving it for the police to find without first seeing it seemed like a bad idea, right?

On the way out of the apartment complex Emily dialed Spencer's number.

"Em," Spencer answered.

"You could've warned us that you were sending Toby," Emily said. "We nearly had a heart attack when he showed."

"I know. I'm sorry. I was going to but..." Spencer paused. "... my sister is here."

"Well why don't you ask her why she visited Charlotte all those years ago," Emily suggested. "Maybe then we can stop sneaking around."

"I can't just ask her that," Spencer answered. "She'll never tell me if I do."

Emily sat in her car and turned it on.

"Did you and Aria find anything?" Spencer asked.

"Yeah, passports for Charlotte and Archer and some plane tickets." Emily pulled onto the main road. "And a flash drive."

"A flash drive?"

"We don't know what's on it but, I have it and I'm heading to the barn right now."

"Okay," Spencer said. "I'm helping my mom wrap up some of this election paperwork and I'll come and meet you."

"Tell her we said congratulations," Emily replied.

"Yeah, okay. See you."

Emily hung up and looked at Aria who seemed lost in thought.

"You okay?" She asked. "Still shaken from Toby?"

"No. I mean, yeah, I am, but I was thinking about where they found Charlotte and Archer's car," Aria confessed. "I think we should pass there."

"Do you know where it is?"

"Yeah, take a left up here."

Emily followed Aria's directions which eventually led her Thomas Mill, and she saw the bridge up ahead. There was no damage done to it. But as they approached they saw how this had happened.

Although the Thomas Mill bridge was originally built to run over water, this river had run dry years ago. Emily slowed her car to inspect the damage.

The barriers to keep cars in line was damaged on the right side of the road. If Charlotte and Elliot had been run off, they would've toppled over the steep cliff and hit solid ground.

"Oh my God," Aria whispered. "You can see..."

Emily gasped to herself as she exited her car. They walked up to the damaged barrier and crossed over to get a better look at the bottom of the cliff.

There it was. The spot that Archer and Charlotte's getaway car had stopped and caught fire. The brush and ground were still black from the flames, and there was still a lot of debris everywhere.

Emily tried not to think about how Archer and Charlotte spent their last moments.

"Whoever did this..." Emily's voice vanished.

"Had a serious vengeance," Aria finished.

The two women had to pull themselves away from the scene to head back to Spencer's. It was like passing a real car wreck, where you couldn't pull your eyes away. And once you were gone the image still managed to haunt you.

As Emily and Aria made it back to the barn Emily's phone rang. It was Alison.

"Ali, hey," Emily answered. "Are you at lunch?"

"I am. I just wanted to call and make sure you were okay," she said. "You and Aria."

"We're okay. We did find something. We're about to look at it now, actually."

Emily handed Aria to flash drive and she watched her friend plug it into Spencer's laptop.

"What did you find?" Alison asked.

"Passports, plane tickets..." Emily said as she stood behind Aria. "And a flash drive."

That's when the file folder popped up on the computers screen. There was only one file. Aria clicked on it.

But when the video popped up, Emily felt a surge of adrenaline. She recognized this video.

It was the video of Melissa's confession to burying Bethany Young alive.

Aria recognized it as well and paused it immediately. Emily couldn't help but fall silent on the phone with Alison. How the hell had this ended up in Archer's possession?

"Emily?" Alison voiced. "What's on the flash drive?"

Emily turned away from the laptop and tried to regain her head.

"It's Melissa's confession tape," she said. "The one she left for Spencer all those years ago."

"The confession tape of killing Bethany?"

"Yes." Emily sat on the couch. "But I don't understand how..."

"Charlotte," Alison said. "Charlotte must've found it when Melissa originally left it for Spencer. That's when she was still sneaking in and out of Radley."

"But for her to keep a copy after all these years?"

Emily watched Aria join her on the couch. That's when Spencer emerged through the front door. When she saw the look on Emily and Aria's faces, her expression worsened.

"Spencer..." Emily started.

"What?" Spencer asked as she set her purse down. "Did you look at the flash drive yet?"

"Is that Spencer?" Alison asked.

"Yeah. I'll call you back, okay?" Emily told Alison. Then she hung up.

"Why are you guys acting so weird?" Spencer wondered.

"We looked at the flash drive," Aria admitted. "Spence... it's Melissa's confession tape."

"What?" Spencer whispered.

Emily watched pure panic cross her friend's face. Everyone knew how this looked, and it looked bad. Spencer stood and rushed to her computer.

Then she pressed play.

"Spencer... You're right," Melissa said. "I have to tell you the truth, before it's too late."

Emily felt like she was seventeen. That's when they had first found this. That's when Melissa had made this tape and then fled to London.

"Dad's taking me to the airport. I'm going back to England. He's been wanting me to go back since I told him what I told him in the police station the night you were gone..."

"Maybe dad's right. There's nothing to do but keep quiet..."

Spencer closed her laptop.

Everyone knew what was to come already. Melissa would claim to see Spencer with the shovel in her hands and assume her sister had murdered the girl. She would admit that she found Bethany out cold in the hole in the DiLaurentis' back yard, thinking it was Alison. And she would confess to burying the body because she thought she was protecting Spencer.

It was all old news that was coming full circle, and now the tape was their responsibility.

"You found this in Archer's apartment?" Spencer asked.

"Yes," Emily confirmed.

Emily was putting the pieces together, and she knew Spencer was too. If Archer and Charlotte had this, there was a reason. And in Emily's opinion, this was a very strong motive to want Charlotte and Archer dead.

Spencer removed the flash drive and studied it. Emily wondered if she was debating on destroying it.

"Her initials," Spencer pointed out. "M. H."

Emily couldn't ignore the defeat in Spencer's eyes. It seemed as if she had already given up looking and had realized this was it. This was the motive that would kill Charlotte. And that motive traced back to none other than Melissa Hastings, Spencer's older sister.

"I need to talk to Toby," Spencer said. "I... I need to know what else the police found in that apartment."

Spencer left with the flash drive in her possession, leaving Emily and Aria in pure confusion and shock.

"Do we really think Melissa could kill Charlotte and Archer?" Aria asked.

"She had the guts to bury someone she thought Spencer killed..." Emily felt her heart pounding. "If she would do that to protect her sister, she would do worse to protect herself."

The mess that was Charlotte and Archer's murder seemed to be unraveling.

That's when Emily's phone rang for the second time since getting to Spencer's. Except this time, it was... Mona?

"Mona?" Emily answered and put her on speaker.

"Archer and Wren knew each other," Mona said.

"How do you know that?"

"Wren was the one to recommend Elliot Rollins to take over as Charlotte's doctor when he quit," Mona revealed. "It was buried deep in Welby's files, but I found it."

It was like blow after blow against Wren and Melissa. It wasn't looking good at all. And with this new-found information, the puzzle pieces began to come together.

"Why'd you call me?" Emily asked.

"No one else is answering, and I figured since you didn't have a day job..."

Emily rolled her eyes. "I do have a job."

"Okay, sorry. Didn't mean to step on your toes," Mona apologized. "But it seems to me that Wren is guilty of something, and he's working really hard to keep it a secret."

"Yeah, well, Aria and I just got back from Archer's apartment," Emily said. "It's not looking good for Melissa either."

Aria and Emily exchanged worried glances.

"Text Spencer what you have," Emily advised. "She's not up for talking right now."

"Will do," Mona said before hanging up.

Now all there was left to do was wait until everyone was available for a meeting. Then they would discuss what everyone had found.

And what they wanted to do with the evidence incriminating Melissa and Wren.
