[S1E17] - A. D.

Emily walked into Spencer's barn and spotted all four of her friends and Toby gathered around the kitchen's island. They weren't supposed to be meeting until later tonight, but apparently Toby had news about Elliot, and it couldn't wait until after the election.

When Emily took her place next to Alison, Spencer gave Toby the OK to proceed.

"Okay, what did you find?" Spencer asked.

Toby planted his hands on his hips. "Elliot Rollins is dead."

The five women looked around at each other.

"Is this a joke?" Hanna said.

"Elliot Rollins has been dead for over a week-"

"No," Toby interrupted. "The real Elliot Rollins has been dead for fifteen years," Toby continued.

"Wait, what?" Alison asked.

"When I ran Elliot Rollins' name through our database there were inconsistencies, so I looked into it." Toby leaned onto the island. "The real doctor Elliot Rollins was seventy-two years old when he died of a stroke."

Emily looked at Toby. "So Elliot...?"

"Was a fraud," Toby finished. "He's been using the identity of the deceased doctor Rollins the whole time he was Charlotte's doctor."

"Oh my God," Aria said.

The story seemed to be widening on all plains. Elliot, whose name wasn't really Elliot, had wanted to be Charlotte's doctor to give her a clean bill of health so they could runaway together. In order to do that, he had to first become her doctor. This would explain why it had taken so long for Charlotte to get out of Welby in the first place. Elliot not only had to sell that he was treating Charlotte, but that he was actually qualified for the job.

But the real question is, who was Elliot Rollins? And had his murderer known Elliot Rollins was a fake? Was that why they killed him?

"Was there anything else? Any other names mentioned?" Spencer asked.

"No," Toby finished. "But I have to get back to the station." He looked at the women. "I'll see you guys later."

Then he was out the door.

"So Charlotte was never my sister and Elliot wasn't even Elliot," Alison repeated. "You think by now I would've been able to smell a liar from a mile away."

Emily rubbed Alison's arm in comfort.

Spencer sighed. "Maybe we'll find something that will connect Charlotte and Elliot and give us his real name tonight."

"Alright well, I've gotta go," Hanna said. "I promised my mom I'd help her prepare for the event tonight."

"See you," the women said as Hanna walked out.

Emily, Alison, Spencer and Aria looked at each other. All were unsure of what to do.

"Does anyone else have a hunch that following Mary could lead us somewhere?" Emily wondered.

"Why? Mary supposedly hadn't known about Charlotte until a few weeks ago. What makes you think she would've known Elliot?" Spencer asked.

Emily shrugged. "I don't know. Maybe she's looking for clues too. I mean she just found out her daughter was murdered. If I were her, I'd be trying to find anything I could."

"And you think she'll lead us somewhere?" Aria asked.

"The letter," Alison said. "The letter that Charlotte wrote to her. She could've mentioned Elliot's real name in there. Mary could know something we don't."

Everyone pondered the idea. It was a long shot, but it made sense.

"Ali and I will watch Mary tonight while you and Toby go into Radley," Emily said.

Spencer nodded. "That sounds like a plan."

Aria grabbed her purse. "Let me know if you find anything?"

Everyone agreed that once their parts were done, they would meet back at the barn to reveal what they had found.

And hopefully they would get closer to the truth about Charlotte and Elliot, and who could've killed them.

* * *

Emily and Alison stood watch outside The Lost Woods Resort. After Alison had mentioned the letter and that Mary may know who Elliot really was, following her seemed like a reasonable idea.

Except Mary had yet to go anywhere and it had been over an hour.

"Maybe we should just go in there and ask her," Emily suggested. "I mean, it wouldn't be that weird, right?"

Alison went to respond when she saw movement outside the cabin.

"Wait," Alison said. "She's leaving."

Emily put her seatbelt on as she waited for Mary to leave. They had waited this long, she couldn't give away their whereabouts.

When Mary made the curb, Emily put her car in drive and started tailing her. Emily had no idea where she could be going, but hopefully it would be somewhere of use.

Once Emily settled back into her seat, she glanced over to Alison. "How are you feeling?"

Alison shook her head. "Nauseated. Betrayed. Stupid."

Emily didn't know what to say, so she just slipped her hand into Ali's.

Ali rubbed her thumb along Emily's tanned hand and smiled. Through all the chaos, Alison could find solid ground with her.

"I made an appointment," Ali said. "Wednesday morning."

Emily felt her pulse quicken. "Would you like me to come with you?"

Alison watched Emily from the passenger seat. After Saturday, they hadn't talked about much pertaining their relationship. Of course, it bothered Ali, but she didn't exactly know what to say.

"Em, this isn't your problem," Alison said.

Emily couldn't help but roll her eyes at Alison's stubbornness. "I wanna be there to support you."

There was unresolved tension between the two women. Emily knew after Saturday night when they had kissed, Alison would show her confusion. This was her doing exactly that. And Emily was trying really hard to give her time to come to terms with... whatever Alison felt for her.

"Saturday night..." Emily started. "When you kissed me..."

Alison could feel her skin grow hot at the memory. Emily wanted to talk about this now?

"Why?" Emily asked. "Why did you?"

Alison couldn't look at her friend, so she just kept her eyes trained on Mary's car. Her heart was in her throat because she was afraid to say the wrong thing.

"It's not because I'm trying to manipulate you," Alison revealed. "I know Paige probably planted that thought in your head a long time ago but... it's not true."

Emily pondered Ali's response, even though that hadn't necessarily answered her question.

Alison took a deep breath.

This was Emily. Her best friend. Someone who has stuck by her through literal hell. Someone who had never given up on her regardless of all the shitty things Alison had made her feel over the years.

They had been through thick and thin together, so why was it so hard to admit she felt something more?

Emily realized Alison was struggling and decided to give up. Maybe she just needed more time.

"You don't have to answer that," Emily said. "Just... forget I asked."

Alison could hear the desperation in Emily's tone. It pained her to know she was doing it again. She was leading Emily on only to leave her hanging.

"I kissed you because I wanted to," Alison forced.

Saying it out loud made her want to smile. She hadn't expected that to feel so good.

Emily was in a state of shock at Alison's comment. She honestly hadn't expected her friend to say anything, much less that.

"Oh," was all Emily said.

Alison looked at Emily and wondered if she was underreacting because she didn't want to freak Ali out, or if it was because she was shocked. Alison appreciated both scenarios.

That's when Mary pulled off onto a side street and headed towards an apartment complex. Emily realized they were in Philly.

"Where is she going?" Alison asked.

"I don't know," Emily answered while she pulled into a parking space.

Both of them watched Mary exit her car, check the piece of paper in her hand, observe her surroundings, and then pace up to one of the buildings.

"Should we follow her?" Alison asked.

But Emily was already exiting the car in a hurry.

Alison rushed behind her and stopped when Emily peered down the hall.

"I think she's on the second floor."

Emily quietly led Alison up the stairs as they took precaution. They didn't need to run into Mary. How would they explain that?

They made it to the second floor and Emily saw a wave of Mary's brown hair round the corner. She grabbed Alison's hand and they raced down the hall.

Emily peeked around the corner and saw Mary staring at a door. Was this Elliot's apartment? And if so, how had she found it?

That's when Mary knocked, but there was no answer. Suddenly Emily couldn't remember if she had told Mary that Elliot, or Charlotte's doctor-slash-boyfriend, had also been murdered.

"Let's go," Emily told Alison. "Before she heads back this way."

They made their way out of the apartment complex and beat Mary outside. Emily stuck around as she watched Mary ball up the piece of paper she had and toss it in a nearby trash bin. Then she sped away into the night.

Alison looked at Emily. "Are we leaving?"

"Gimme a second," Emily said as she paced towards the trash bin.

She pulled the cover off and shined her phone light over the trash. She found the balled-up piece of paper and grabbed it. Then she raced back to her car.

"Did you really just dig in the trash?" Alison asked.

Emily unfolded the paper. "I'm not proud of it."

Alison turned on the dome light of Emily's car as they read the scribbled handwriting.

"Archer Dunhill ?

23 Wexford Street

Apartment 109"

"Archer Dunhill?" Emily said aloud.

"You think that's Elliot's real name?" Alison wondered.

Then Emily's phone rang out, sharing them. Alison glanced over and saw Spencer's name.

She answered and put her on speaker.

"Spencer," Emily said. "I think Ali and I just found-"

"We have Mary Drake's Radley file," Spencer cut off. "We also found Charlotte's."

Emily looked at Alison and started her car to leave.

"Where are you guys?" Spencer asked.

"We were following Mary," Alison answered. "We think she may have just led us to Archer's apartment."

"Who's Archer?"

"Elliot," Emily corrected. "Sorry. We'll explain when we get back to Rosewood."

Alison ended the call and sighed. "I don't know how this will get us any closer to who killed them."

"Every bit of information counts," Emily said. "And now that we have a name, it could lead us somewhere."

The car fell silent as Alison and Emily thought about what they had just found. Maybe Charlotte had mentioned the name Archer Dunhill and that had led Mary to the apartment in hopes to find him. Maybe she was looking into Charlotte's death as well, considering the police had yet to charge someone.

When they made it back to Rosewood Emily and Alison found their friends waiting for them in the barn. They were analyzing the files when they walked in the door.

And along with her friends stood none other than Mona Vanderwaal.

Alison crossed her arms. "What's she doing here?"

"Good to see you too, Alison," Mona greeted.

"She followed Toby and I in Radley," Spencer said.

Mona just gave a shrug and a smile.

Spencer looked at Emily. "So who's Archer?"

Emily revealed the slip of paper Mary had thrown out to her friends. Everyone leaned in to analyze it.

"Are you saying this could be Elliot's real identity?" Hanna asked.

"It's a possibility," Emily answered.

"Wait." Spencer began flipping through Charlotte's file. "She had a visitor log in here somewhere..."

"You think he might've visited Charlotte while she was in Radley?" Aria wondered.

Emily scanned the list of names but never saw the name Archer Dunhill. But when she read Melissa Hastings, the air in the room fell still.

Emily looked at Spencer. "Why did your sister visit Charlotte?"

Spencer eyed the file. "I-I... I don't know."

"Check to see who Charlotte's doctor was at Radley," Alison claimed.

That's when things seemed to circle back around. Not only had Melissa visited Charlotte during her stay, but Wren had also been her doctor years ago. Around the same time Mona had checked into Radley.

"Well," Mona said. "Looks like the police are overlooking two people who just keep popping up."

"Yeah well, the Rosewood PD is infamous for that," Spencer said.

"And being paid off," Alison included.

That's when something in the group clicked. Emily saw the look on Spencer's face and knew this was really bad.

"Do you think Charlotte had something on Melissa?" Aria asked.

"And they're paying the police to keep themselves off Furey's radar?" Hanna weighed in.

"That would explain why -A's sending us on this wild goose chase," Alison said.

This was a possibility they hadn't thought about in detail because Melissa and Wren had claimed to have an alibi. But now that Spencer had exposed that alibi as a lie and this visitor log had resurfaced... it was a game changer.

"We're back at Wren and my sister," Spencer confirmed. "But we still don't have a motive."

"So we'll find one," Mona included.

Spencer gave Mona a displeased look. "And why are you so determined to do so?"

"Because you're not the only one on Furey's suspect list," Mona said. "I was called in for questioning too."

Emily looked down and saw Mona's key ring dangling between her two fingers. That's when she saw it. The pair of pink dice.

"It was you," Emily accused.

Mona locked eyes with Emily. "What?"

"You were the one that called Charlotte from The Two Crows Diner."

Mona faltered. "How would you know that?"

"Because I got called in for an ID when they were looking for you," Aria said. "Tanner told me the woman had a pair of pink dice on her key ring."

"Maybe we should start looking into you, Mona." Spencer folded her arms. "Is that why you vouched for her to be released at the hearing? So you could kill her when she got out?"

"Oh please," Mona defended. "Like I would risk my entire future on something that happened five years ago." She stood tall. "Yes. I called Charlotte. And she said she would meet me but never showed. I waited for her for hours at that diner."

As easy as it would've been to pin the murder on Mona, it seemed like she was telling the truth.

"Look, all of us wanted Charlotte dead at one point or another," Mona said. "But running someone off of a road is not my style."

The women realized they had no choice but to believe her word. At least for now.

"So we'll go back to the apartment tomorrow," Emily said. "We'll look for clues as to what Archer and Charlotte's plans were and who would want them dead."

"I'll come with you," Aria offered. "You shouldn't go there alone."

Alison looked at Emily and realized she wished it was her going to the apartment too, but Emily could take care of herself. She had done it countless times before. But that didn't mean Alison wouldn't worry.

"I'll look more into Archer Dunhill and see what I can find," Mona claimed.

Everyone gave her wary looks.

Mona rolled her eyes. "We all know you five can't touch my computer skills." She smirked. "You need me."

Then Mona left.

"She's kinda right," Hanna agreed.

Alison took in a deep breath and tried to take everything in. She felt overwhelmed with everything going on that she really just wanted to go home and sleep.

"I'm gonna head home," Ali said. "I'll see you guys tomorrow."

"I'll walk you," Emily offered.

Alison and Emily left the Hastings' barn and trekked back to Ali's front door. Deep down Emily wanted to spend the night with Ali, but figured she would want some space. The last thing Emily wanted to do was be overbearing.

When they made it to the DiLaurentis' front door, they prepared to say their goodbyes.

"Call me if you need anything, okay?" Emily said.

Alison nodded. "Be careful tomorrow."

"I will."

Both women lingered for a moment, and it seemed as if the conversation was still unresolved. Emily felt compelled to say something else, but decided it was best not to.

But when Ali turned away Emily couldn't help herself.

She caught Alison's hand.

"Ali..." she whispered.

Alison turned back around with hopeful eyes. Would Emily ask to stay the night?

But instead Emily leaned in and kissed Alison. It was the first time in a long time that Emily had initiated such a gesture. Alison had to force herself not to smile during the short kiss.

"W-Why'd you do that?" Alison asked, knowing she sounded like a flustered teenager.

"Because I wanted to." Emily smiled. "Goodnight Alison."

"Goodnight."

Emily turned away and Alison stood there and watched her friend get into her car and leave. She could still feel the tingling sensation running from her lips all through her body.

For the first time in years, Emily had kissed Alison, and it reminded Ali that she had more than one important decision to make.

And she needed to make them fast.
