Chapter 15
"You what?!" I exclaimed
"It was an accident!" Leo said defensively, "I was just trying to find my phone!"
Leo and I were both at school waiting for Adam, Bree, and Chase to arrive
"So, while searching for your phone, you managed to slam the couch onto the ground and break one of the rocks in the living room?" I asked him, "Do you know what Tasha is going to do to you?"
"To be fair, that rock didn't match the theme of the house," He pointed out, and I couldn't help, but agree with him
"You need to be careful. Just because Douglas gave you a bionic arm doesn't mean you can use it whenever you want. You have to learn to control it, it's not a toy," I warned
He gave me a look and said, "Speaking of Douglas, you sound like him right now."
I just rolled my eyes and said, "It took me a little while to get used to my powers. And if I didn't I'd be a huge mess, it's all about control. I know that it's fun, believe me, but you have to be responsible." He went to respond, but he immediately closed it when we both saw Agent Graham walk into the school
Everyone had their phones out, ready to take pictures and videos. Graham announced, "Students of Mission Creek, please welcome your bionic super humans!"
Adam, Bree, and Chase walked into the school, and everyone applauded for them with small grins growing on their faces. Leo and I looked at each other before joining in with the other students. It felt weird applauding for Adam, Bree, and Chase, but after all that time in the shadows they deserved it
"And our trusty little mascot, Chase." Adam added, Chase just sent him a look while shoving Adam's hand off his shoulder.
"Now that I'm in charge of the bionic team, I'm going to be taking them to a whole new level. Believe me, you're going to be seeing a lot more of us," Agent Graham smirked, I looked over at Adam, Bree, and Chase, who were taking in all of the attention. I walked away from Leo and over to them. Chase and Bree both saw me and smiled
"So how's it going?" I asked Chase
"It's amazing! It's like we're celebrities." Chase replied to me with a huge grin on his face. Graham came up and placed his hands on Chase's shoulders
He whispered, "We are, and this is just the beginning."
With that he left, I glare as he left before turning to I Bree and Chase, "These people are so shallow. They're only talking to you because you're bionic."
"I know." Bree agreed with me, "This is awesome! Now I finally know how you feel everyday!"
I rolled my eyes at how excited Bree and Chase got over this. Then, we all turned to look over at Adam and saw him signing some girl's forehead
As he signed it, he said, "There you go. One autographed forehead for Pam."
When she turned our direction, my hand flew up to my mouth so I wouldn't laugh when I saw Adam wrote her name instead of his own. She didn't seem to notice because she was in awe by Adam as she walked away. I walked away from Bree and Chase and over to Adam
"You know you're supposed to write your name, right?" I asked him
He paused for a moment before saying, "Yeah, that would make more sense."
~~~~~
Since I had nothing else to do after school, I decided to stay back in the lab so I could watch Adam, Bree, and Chase train. But they weren't home yet. In fact, they were fifteen minutes late. As the agents worked on the cyber desk and consoles and I played on my phone, Davenport attempted to carry in a large barrel. I tried not to laugh because it was honestly pretty funny
He stopped and looked at all of us, "No, don't get up. I got it."
I snorted, "Here, let me."
I easily lifted the barrel up and positioned it where he wanted just as Graham and the trio came into the lab bursting with laughter
They were all giggling about something so I asked them, "What's so funny?"
Adam didn't even hesitate to tell us, "Agent Graham said the most amazing piece of technology in the whole lab is Mr. Davenport's hair."
The four of them, now including me, began to laugh because that was honestly pretty funny. Davenport gave us a look and said, "Ha ha, hysterical. You're fifteen minutes late for training."
"Actually, their training's been put on hold until further notice. Didn't you read the memo? Oh, that's right. You're not on the memo list," Graham spoke
"They need their training to maintain their bionics. Not to mention their missions-" I began
"Are you trying to take over MY team Ms. Anderson? Because this sounds like a breach of Hero's Integrity," Agent Graham interrupted, I growled
"I'm not telling you how to do anything. I'm stating that powers require training to maintain stability. It's the most important mission a hero has," I informed him
"Well right now, the most important mission is getting our faces out there. That's why we're going on an International press tour," Agent Graham spoke
Bree stared at him in disbelief and asked, "Wait, no training and we get to travel? Can we go to Paris?!"
"Only after we go to London!" Graham said to her
"Yes!" Bree cheered while smiling excitedly with Adam and Chase
"Look, I know we kind of got off on the wrong foot with the whole me arresting you thing," Graham 'apologized'
The three of them just waved it off like it was nothing. My eyes widened in surprise as I looked back at Davenport. They can't be serious!
"Hey, just tell me we're going to Des Moines and all is forgiven," Adam offered
"Then, I guess we're going to Des Moines!" Graham replied
"Yes! I love being owned by the government!"
Finally, I turned away from Davenport and looked at them with my shocked face. How could they forgive Graham that easily after everything? Plus, they know how important training is! I can't believe they would just blow it off to be famous. That is not how Superhero's work!
"Woah, woah, woah! Guys, this is completely irresponsible," Davenport interrupted them
Bree walked over to him and said, "Mr. Davenport, we've been training our whole lives. Don't we deserve just a little bit of fun?"
"I think you do," Graham chipped in, "I also think you deserve a little thanks for all that you've done for mankind. Don't you agree, Mr. Davenport and Scarlett?"
My jaw clenched and I crossed my arms angrily while Davenport admitted, "Of course I do."
"But you can't blow off your responsibilities just to be a public face," I argued
"But, and correct me if I'm wrong, haven't you been in the public eye your entire life? Doing press conferences, traveling the world--"
"None of which ever interferes with my training or missions. At the end of the day, that's what matters most," I interrupted
"Well then, what harm is it if they just get a little taste of the spotlight? After all, you've kept them out of it for sixteen years, why not let them shine a bit?" Graham asked, smirking at me
"I hate to admit, but he has a point," Chase began, my eyes widened and my jaw dropped
"Chase you can't be serious!"
"We've never really gotten the recognition you have, besides some of our missions you took credit for," Chase began
"That was to protect you and you know it!"
"And we appreciated your support then and we're asking for it now," Bree spoke up
"Yeah, besides how hard can it be to balance everything, you do it," Adam pointed out
"You guys have no idea the sacrifices you will be making if you continue down this road," I warned
"Then let me be clear," Graham began, "They can do what they please, and if you try anything to discourage them I will have your hero statues ripped from you. Is that clear?"
I glared at him, "I hope everything you do is worth it."
I then glanced at the team, "I hope you know what you're getting into."
And with that I spun on my heel and left the room
~~~~~
I couldn't stand being in the house with all those government agents so I stayed at my Mom's house for a while. Her and Sam we having a much needed spa day so I just waited on their return
As I sat in my room sketching a new design when my phone rang, looking at the ID I saw it was Davenport, why was he calling?
I answered, "Hello?"
"Scarlett I need your help!" Davenport urged, I discarded my drawing and gave him my full attention
"Davenport what's wrong?"
"Look there's a mission alert and I can't get ahold of the trio, I need you to come help! People are in danger!" Davenport urged
"Don't worry, I'm on my way. Send me the coordinates, I'll meet you there," I reassured, hanging up the phone and using my lightening powers to shift into my superhero suit
And this is why I never let fame get in the way of saving the day
~~~~~
The mission wasn't entirely bad, luckily nobody was hurt but there was severe property damage. And the amount of times I had to help save Davenport was unreal
We both looked a mess as Davenport unpacked his gear bag, and he definitely wasn't happy right now, and I didn't blame him. I was really mad at Adam, Bree, and Chase. How in the world could they ignore Davenport's calls and a mission alert?
When the three of them walked into the lab with their mission suits on, they immediately saw us and smiled.
Bree greeted, "Oh, hey guys."
"What happened to you guys?" Chase asked
Davenport and I both looked up at them disappointed. Davenport slammed the piece of equipment he was holding on the table and asked them, "Where have you been? I've been calling for hours."
"I didn't even notice you called," Chase told him, "We've been too busy flying around the country doing meet and greets."
"Yeah, we kissed a ton of babies. Their heads are delicious," Adam added
When the three of them saw that the two of us weren't amused, Chase immediately pulled out his phone and looked at it, "Seventeen missed calls and a text message... with a mission alert."
He looked back up at us and saw the disappointed looks on our faces. He said, "So, how can we help you? Yesterday?"
"Scarlett and I had to go by ourselves." Davenport told them angrily, "Since my own kids couldn't answer their phones, I had to bring Scarlett who luckily wasn't busy with a mission of her own to help."
Adam, Bree, and Chase all turned to look at me sadly, but I just crossed my arms and looked at them angrily
"That's terrible. You should've called us," Adam spoke
I rolled my eyes in annoyance as Agent Graham walked into the lab. He said to Adam, Bree, and Chase, "Good news, team! This weekend, we're off to Paris!"
Then, Davenport snapped and walked over to him, "Alright, enough with the press tour! They have important work to do. Because of you, they missed a mission and people almost got hurt!"
"There are more important things than being famous!" I added, "There are more important priorities to handle!"
"Well, that's unfortunate, but they have other priorities right now," he responded then walked out of the lab while typing on his phone.
When I looked over at Adam, Bree, and Chase, they had their heads hung down. I threw my hands up and asked them, "So getting your faces plastered in front of the cameras is more important than saving lives?"
"We didn't say that." Chase said to me, watching what he said to me because he knew to not make me even more mad, "It's just... things have changed."
Davenport scoffed, "Well, I'm glad we had sixteen years of bionic training so you can do the weather for A.M. San Diego."
Bree hesitated before admitting sheepishly, "That's tomorrow."
Davenport just shook his head and said to them, "I'm really disappointed in you guys. All your hard work and all you care about is being famous."
Davenport began to walk out of the lab as Chase began to say, "Mr. Davenport-"
"You know what? Save it!" Davenport interrupted, whirling around to them. Chase immediately shut his mouth as Davenport said, "I thought you guys were heroes, but I guess I was wrong."
I turned to them, "I know how fun it is to have your name out in the world and to get praise for what you do. But it should never be a choice of fame or peoples lives, because at the end of the day not everyone can defend themselves and so we are there to help them in their time of need."
"Scarlett--" Chase began
"I expected better of all of you, if this is how you handle fame now then I'd hate to see what happens when you become more famous," I frowned, before turning around and exiting after Davenport
~~~~~
After I basically blew up at the team I spent most of my time away from them, afraid I'd do more damage
But then I got a random text from Davenport telling me to come down to the lab, so I super sped to the house and got down to the lab to see Adam using his bionic breath to push Agent Graham away
"Don't worry, Mr. President! I'm sure one of these buttons will take care of everything!" Agent Graham said. When he got the chance, he sprung to the side and hit a button on the cyber desk. That's when the floor beneath the President and his bodyguards opened up, and they fell to the ground.
I gasped, "Mr. President!"
"Scarlett? Is that you?" He shouted from down below, Adam immediately stopped his bionic breath and I ran over to the open compartment in the floor
"Yes sir! Hang on I'm coming down!" I warned, before jumping over the edge and landing down in front of the President and his two guards
I looked him over, "Are you alright sir? And your guards as well?"
"I'm alright, and so are they. Evidently their bionics were malfunctioning and now I'm stuck down here," He explained
"Malfunctioning? But they--" I began, before I caught on, they were faking! I smiled proudly before continuing, "Oh, yes sir they've been overworked with so many tours, conferences, interviews, and more that they haven't had time to properly train. And we both know how important training it."
He looked at me and nodded, "I think its time the three of us had a chat, don't you think?"
"Mr. President, I'd love nothing more. Now lets get you out of here."
~~~~~
Once I got the President out of the floor, Graham followed the President around everywhere. It made me laugh how desperate Graham was. He really had this coming, and I'm glad that Adam, Bree, and Chase did the right thing
"So, uh, Mr. President, anything else you'd like to see?" Agent Graham finally asked him
"Yes. Your qualifications for this job," The President said, which made me smirk. He looked at one of the other agents and ordered, "Call Washington. Have them send a replacement for this clown immediately."
"What?! No!" Agent Graham began to protest
"Actually Mr. President if I may.." I began
"Of course, go ahead," He offered
"Well--"
"Mr. President with all due respect this is a breach of her Hero's Integrity! She doesn't have authorization--"
"Agent Graham tell me something, do you have superpowers?"
"Well... no but--"
"Have you worked with the government in a top secret program for your entire life as a superhero?"
"No..."
"Have you save me from an assassination attempt? Twice by supervillians?"
"No..."
"Have you ever trained as a superhero?"
"Sir I don't see the point here--"
"The point is, Ms. Anderson has," The President interjected, looking over to me and giving me a smile, "This girl has devoted her life to our nation and has, on more than one occasion, saved my life."
He turned back to Graham and gave him a hard look, "She saved the nations leader, a husband, a father, a simple man without hesitating. I've seen her growth since her time here and honestly without her our nation would've fallen to villains a long time ago. So what point are you trying to make about her Hero's Integrity?"
"Well..." Graham squeeked
"His argument is that Adam, Bree, and Chase haven't been listed under powerful acquaintances I know. But they are listed under my family protection plan, I looked it up," I spoke, throwing a knowing look to Graham as his face falter more, "His argument is that I don't have government jurisdiction over the bionic trio."
"If they are listed under her family protection plan then she is more than welcome to have a say over their health, government engagements, and more. And I'm giving her full permission right now," the President spoke, before turning to me, "Now, you were saying, Ms. Anderson."
"Thank you, Mr. President. As I was saying, Agent Graham is utterly under qualified to have any authority over this team. He puts off their training for public appearances and prances them around like show ponies instead of treating them like human beings," I explained, crossing my arms knowingly
"Ms. Anderson?"
"Yes sir?"
"Who would you suggest as a replacement for this clown?" He asked, I smirked
"Him," I spoke, pointing at Davenport who threw me a grateful smile
"The smoothie guy?" The President asked skeptical
"He's not the smoothie guy. He's our father, and our real leader," Chase interjected
"Agent Graham doesn't care about missions or helping people. He just wants to make money off of us," Bree told the President
The President looked shocked as he turned to Agent Graham and asked him, "Is this true?"
"Sir, with all due respect, we can't let a civilian have control of the world's most powerful weapons," Graham said, which made me mad.
"Weapons? They're not weapons. They're his children," The President said, which made us all smile, "You're done, Graham. Get him out of here."
"Might I suggest a replacement field for him?" I pondered
"You may," The President agreed
"I could always use a someone in the field monitor area," I suggested
"Field monitor?" Graham scoffed
"Oh it's a job where you stare at a screen all day with several other people and pinpoint villain attacks! Fitting don't you think?" I smirked
"So you're suggesting he becomes one of your analysts?"
"No sir, I suggest he becomes their 'lab assistant,'" I smirked, The President smiled knowingly
"What does that mean?" Graham asked
"Agent Graham I nearby declare your new job position as... Smoothie guy," The President smirked, Grahams face dropped
"Sir you can't be serious!"
"After all the trouble you've causes the nations hero and her family I see no problem in granting her request," He spoke, I smiled at him before looking at Graham with another smirk
"I told you that you had no idea who you were messing with, now please Agents, get him out of my sight," I smirked, they nodded and began to drag him away again
As he was led out, Adam said to him, "I just want you to know that we'll always have Des Moines."
The President then turned to Davenport, "Mr. Davenport, the government owes you an apology. We had no right to come between you and your family."
Chase interjected, "And, Mr. President, we owe you an apology too. Our bionics didn't really glitch. We just had to expose Graham and show you that he wasn't qualified to lead us."
The President just smiled, "I figured something was up. I've seen the footage of your abilities. They're quite impressive."
The President turned back to Davenport and said, "Listen, if you can keep me briefed, I see no reason why you shouldn't resume control here."
Davenport just nodded relieved and shook his hand, "Thank you, Mr. President."
The President then turned back to me, "You have a wonderful family here, Ms. Anderson."
I smiled, "The best one yet, sir. Thank you for helping us, it means a lot."
"Anything for the nations hero, we'll see you for dinner with the girls next week?"
"I wouldn't miss it for the world sir, have a safe trip back to D.C. And tell the ladies I say hello," I spoke, he smiled and held out his hand, I gently shook it
"Will do," he responded and went to leave, but he stopped, "Oh, before I leave, I need to do something."
Before any of us could say anything, he pulled out his phone and took a quick selfie with Adam, Bree, and Chase. Then, he saw us all staring at him and he said, "Bionic selfie. It's for my daughter."
We all just smiled and laughed slightly. Waving him goodbye as he left the lab
I turned to the trio, "I'm really proud of you guys, that was incredible. I wish I'd seen it all."
"Oh don't worry, we have a recording," Bree reassured, I laughed and then pulled them all in for a hug
As we parted I turned to Chase, planting a small kiss on his cheek, "I'm really proud of you to."
He beamed, "I'm sorry it took so long for me to realize being famous wasn't everything. Saving lives is."
"Well its a lesson well learned, I'm proud of you baby."
"Does this mean I'm not in the doghouse anymore?"
"Only if you buy me dinner."
"Sold."
