Almost Caught
But for
You I'll
Go
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Three days later I leave school and head for the Woodshop. I usually got out before Wind but we agreed that it would be fine if we arrived at the Woodshop seperately.
I was walking toward the fence I saw something that shocked and terrified me.
There was an Enforcer.
An Enforcer's job is to make sure that the Guidelines are followed. They're usually dressed in black with helmets that cover their faces. They carry guns and never smile.
I try to run before he notices me but it's too late. He runs over and grabs me by the shoulder.
I stare up at him in fear. His grip is strong and it hurts my shoulder. But he doesn't care.
"What are you doing out here?"
He asks roughly.
"Nothing." I respond immediately.
"Why are you not at your Dwelling?"
"I was..."
I don't know what to say. Technically I wasn't about to do anything wrong, there was nothing in the Guidelines that said we couldn't leave the Community.
The Enforcer looks up and shoves me aside. I tumble down onto the ground. When I look up I see Wind.
She looks at me and then at the Enforcer. There is no fear in her eyes. Only concern.
"What are you doing here?" he asks her.
She can't answer. She doesn't want to answer. She just stands there quietly, calm and poised.
"Answer me!" the man roars.
He'll hurt her. I know he will. I can't let that happen.
"She can't!" I stand up and brush the snow off my coat.
"What do you mean she can't?"
He turns back to me. He's furious.
Wind looks at me pleadingly.
Stay out of it.
"She can't-" I stop myself. If he learns that she's a Transfer, he'll beat her.
Transfers are not supposed to wander the Community freely. What Wind and I do every day, sneaking off to the Woodshop, could get her in serious trouble.
"She can't what?" he takes a step towards me. He knows something's up.
Just then, the wind begins to blow. It kicks up all the snow around us. It swirls through the air and into my eyes.
I can't see. Everything becomes white.
I feel someone grab my hand.
Wind.
She pulls her scarf tighter against her face and squints her eyes.
Together we fight our way through the snow and towards the fence. We climb over and race towards the woods.
We never look back.
