Chapter Twenty-Six: The Alphas
Twenty-five years ago a miracle happened in the Cresent Beam Pack. A she - wolf with the name Lenexa Feurstein, gave birth to twins the night after a full moon, a male and a female.
It was wolf gossip for months, it traveled from one pack to another, women smiled at such beautiful accomplishment. Men nodded amungst themselves at how hard that was to achieve.
Now, this wasn't the first time there were twins born. It's happened quite a few times, it was however, the first time alpha bloodline gave birth to twins. So complications arose.
First it was a wonderful thing that those twins were born. No one thought it would bring any misfortunes.
You see, whenever shape-shifting twins were born, one of them was born human. This wasn't the case with the Feurstein twins, and they didn't know that until the twins were eight-years-old, and they shifted for the first time.
Choas erupted.
The twins were next in line to become alpha. But no pack can have two alphas. So naturally they would go by which wolf was born first, but, they were both born at the same time. Cut out of their mothers stomach to ensure they both survived.
There was nothing to determine who would be the next alpha. The male, Edan. Or the female, Everest.
So they trained them both, starting the day after they shifted. With weapons, hands and teeth they were taught to fight. With their ears they were taught to listen to the most delicate sounds. With their noses they were taught to smell their enemies fear. With their eyes they were taught to see everything. And they loved every minute of it.
They had this game called "catch me if you can". How their mother hated that game. One of the twins would randomly yell out the phrase and the other would have to catch them, and pin them.
With every spare minute they had they were at each others throats. Loud battle cries came from their small bodies. In the house, in the center of the pack, in the backyard. Without even noticing they were training themselves. By the time they were fifteen they were stronger than the fighters and the border parolers.
The Feurstein twin were the heart of
Cresent Beam. One of them was the future ruler. But that didn't mean that everyone liked them. In fact, most people didn't like Everest Feurstein. She was to much like her grandmother. She didn't care what her people wanted, she only cared what she wanted for them.
Everest grew up to be a beautiful but deadly wolf. She cared about no one except her brother and mother. She didn't have a problem killing anyone who said something against her. That made her dangerous and powerful. Because she cared for nothing, she took more risks, which made her a stronger wolf.
Edan, he grew up to be an attractive male that everyone loved. The females fawned over him, the males wanted to be him. That gave him a advantage that his sister didn't have if they were to ever vote for a new leader, which is what everyone thought was going to happen.
But it seemed to good to be true. Twins, both shape shifters, alphas, a vote to see who was the next alpha sounded ridiculous. What was the other unannointed alpha going to do? Live the life of a normal wolf? Now that was absured.
Everyone knew Alpha Emerson was unpredictable, but they never thought she'd make her own grandchildren fight to see who was the stronger wolf.
To many it didn't seem like a big deal, until they heard that it was a fight to the death.
The twins were twenty years old, ready to take the throne. But first one of them had to die.
Whoever died would be killed by the person they loved most. Neither of them could have that.
Everest was outraged. So angry she attacked her grandmother, leaving her to bleed on the floor for death to take her. Then she fled, with Edan right by her side.
That was the plan from the moment he heard one of them needed to die. They knew what was to happen if one of them if they stayed.
Everest would win and become alpha. Something that she never wanted to be. Edan would die by the hands of his sister and his ghost would watch her become something he was destined to be.
Little did he know his grandmother was left for death, leaving Cresent Beam without an Alpha. Weak as ever, hungrily looking for their alpha to arrive home.
Now that she was walking on lands that didn't belong to the wolves, planing on never returning home. With her brother challenging the alpha of another pack for his leadership.
"I challenge you, Alpha Cyrus Night. For your position," he didn't yell, but his voice reeked with authority and dominance.
Glory wanted to slap herself for being so stupid. How did she not see that they were the Feurstein twins?
Avery wrapped his arms around her waist from behind and pulled her back. She struggled to be free, but he wouldn't have it.
She tilted her head to glare up at him, his expression was hard - but unreadable. He was staring at the two alpha males.
Her heart dropped - someone was going to die today. Either it will be her soulmate, or her best friends father. She stopped struggling, Avery seemed thankful for that.
"Avery," she spoke, tone low, sadness lacing her voice.
"Pay attention, respect your alpha," he didn't seem affected that his father would die. Which worried her, was Edan not good?
Suddenly another thought hit her, she slapped Avery's hand as it dawned to her. He said he had a plan for stopping the ceremony. Was this it? Did he know Edan was an Alpha? That was impossible, Edan was weak, his werewolf scent had almost completely vanished.
"Did you know Edan was an Alpha?" Glory harshly whispered.
"Glory," he looked - and sounded annoyed. She almost smiled, but the snarls in the center of silence were there to ruin it."It is law to pay attention to your alpha when he is being challenged for support. And for respect to your new alpha if he wins."
"Sorry," she mumbled, training her eyesight on the view in front of her. "I'll just ask later."
The two wolves had half-shifted, something not all wolves can do. Only strong beta's and alpha's, some pack fighters, but it was rare. Eyes were crimson, ears pointy, teeth sharp, claws deadly - ready to slice throat.
Glory squinted, leading foreward as the alpha and rogue circled each other. Edan's eyes, though he had not yet been made a real alpha and hadn't shifted in months, were a darker shade than Alpha Cyrus'. He was stronger.
Edan made the first move, which surprised most of the audience around her. The one who made the first move made the boldest move.
Edan attacked, teeth going for the alpha's neck. They both fumbled to the ground, growls coming from both of their throats. The alpha threw him off and had the upper hand. Edan grabbed his face, digging his nails into his cheeks. The alpha roared and clawed at Edan's chest. A loud crack sounded through the sensitive ears of hundreds.
Glory winced, clutching her white traditional dress in one hand. Her eyes shut, she didn't care if she was disrespecting anyone. She didn't like the sight of blood, she never did. She waited, listening to the fight go on. She didn't want to watch anyone die today.
A few moments later a loud crack echoed through the air, now she was afraid to open her eyes to see who that crack belonged to.
She felt her body start to tremble with nervousness.
When Glory's eyes were closed the sound intensified. Which might have been worse than seeing the happenings. The sound of someone dragging their skin along the chest with their nails hit her ears. The ripping of flesh and spilling of blood. Glory felt her stomach churn uncomfortably.
"Glory," Avery's lips touched the shell of her ear.
She ignored him. She didn't want to look.
"Glory look," he ordered with his 'alpha tone'.
"Glory," he spoke with gritted teeth.
She gave in, she opened her eyes, and the first thing she saw was green.
Green that reminded her of nature. The soft grass in the woods and the green leaves on the hundreds of trees. It reminded her of sparkling jewels, the expensive emeralds the luna used to wear around her neck. It reminded her of home.
Then she saw red. An oozing liquid red, thick and crimson. A colour that reminded her of defeat and death. The colour of pain.
The blood was everywhere.
It was dripping off Edan's hands, pooling on the floor, and covering the dead alpha's chest.
Edan's mark was slashed across Cyrus' chest. A signature move all wolves had to complete to signefy their victory.
Edan's stood head held high, expression stone cold, staring right at Glory. Her heart skipped more than one beat - eyes trailing to the dead behind him.
She was swelling with pride because her mate won - but hurt laced her emotions because of Avery.
Slowly the wolves around her began to bow their heads in respect to their new alpha. First the omegas, then the commons, the fighters, the only people that hadn't bowed yet were the ones that were by Cyrus' side through thick and thin. Hesitantly they bowed to, and so did Avery.
Leaving everyone with bowed heads and eyes closed, just Edan and Glory staring at each other. And she to lowered her head - honoring her alpha.
They began to lift their heads again, looking to their new leader for guidance. A new leader comes with a lot of work, which is why most alpha's prefer to not conquer other packs.
"My name is Edan Feurstein," he removed his gaze from Glory. Circling, males and females around him. "And I am your alpha."
