Chapter Twenty-Five: Tell Me You Love Me
It was finally the day.
The day she should have had seven moons ago.
The horrific, stupid, disgusting day.
Today was the day she was to be marked by a male she did not love. And never will love.
There she stood once again with the simple white dress hanging on her body. Hugging all the right places.
Glory resently discovered that she hated mirrors. It's the only thing she's been doing the last week or so - staring into mirrors. Some form of reflection that looked like her stared back. Lately she's being judged by everyone, the mirror being the worst there is. She knows what the mirror thinks, however, she does not know what the other minds think. So they don't bother her as much as the reflection.
Today the mirror had a beautiful wolf woman. Hair that flowed to her hips in waves, brown, streaks of gold visible when the sun shone bright enough. Clear skin - perfect skin, a trait all wolves shared. Brown eyes that many envied - as funny as it may seem as they are so called "over-rated" in the human world. In the world of wolves they are of rare beauty.
While those eyes may be beautiful, it's what was held inside that hunts the soul. Nothing. There is nothing inside those vacant eyes. Void of any emotion. Bags under her eyes made her seem tired, which she was. She hadn't slept all night. Her heart was pounding to fast at the thought of being away from Edan.
She was in to much pain to cry. Her heart ached to heavily. Her soul begged to be near him. To see him once again.
Glory closed her eyes, trying to block the world out. She couldn't go through with this day, she couldn't. She will go mad.
Avery was to good to be trapped with one he doesn't love. His heart was to kind and precious.
And Edan - oh Edan - Glory was going to go mad without him.
There was no way she was going to accept the mark of Avery's beast. A mark that would connect their minds and hearts for as long as they breathed on this cruel world.
She opened her eyes, suddenly hit with reality. Today was the day. The day she and many pack memebers had prepared for for years. She wasn't going to go through with it.
She turned away from the reflection, eyes on the door. Her bare feet padded on the wooden floor, stepping outside of the room she was not to leave until the ceremony begins.
She walked towards him. Towards Avery. She followed where his scent lead her, making sure there were no others around. She didn't want to risk getting caught. She was in enough trouble already, and she didn't want to make up a lie on something that can be avoided.
"Glory, what are you doing here," his expression was dead - pan, as usual. It was at a point where Glory just didn't care anymore.
She parted her lips to speak, but she was unable to. Choking on her words. "I - "
"What is it?" He put his hands on her shoulders, peering into her eyes. "Is everyhing okay?"
She swallowed, why was it so hard to say? Was she finally breaking a week later?
"I can't - " she gulped, the lump in her throat making it hard for her. "It's - I can't go through with this. I'm sorry."
He was quiet before speaking up at her before. "Do not be sorry, Glores. There is nothing to be sorry for."
Those words did nothing to make her feel more at ease. In less than two hours the male in front of her will be her mate. She did not want that.
"I'm going to run," she spoke, not hesitating. "I need to do something. I - I love him. I want to be with him. If I stay - you and I, we'll be miserable for the rest of our lives."
"Glory. Do not be stupid. You aare not going to get very far with all the wolves surrounding the pack house. Fortunately for you, I do no want you either. I have a plan."
Glory's eyes widened, shock setting on her face. "Oh." She didn't think he'd help her out a second time. She didn't even think he cared that she didn't want him.
"Do not act so surprised," his tone was witty, and for a second she thought he even almost rolled his eyes. "Get back to your room. I got it under control."
Glory's gaze lingered on Avery, glancing to where his hands where on her shoulders.
He must've forgotten they were still there because he removed them as quickly as he could. He wasn't a fan of physical touch.
He folded up the cuffs on his white dress shirt. "Go to your room, the ceremony starts in fifteen minutes. If anyone ask, tell them you were looking for water."
She gave him a funny look. "You do know they can hear my heartbeat. They'll know I'm lying."
"Glory," he replied like he was stating the obvious. "You're their future luna. My mate to be. They have no right to question your choices. And if they do, they'll hear it from me. If you would have showed up to all your training classes you would know how to control your heartbeat when you lie. Now scurry. We have a long day ahead of us."
She wanted to slap him and hug him all at the same time, but instead she just smiled. For the first time that week she genuinely smiled.
The last week she couldn't even smile without faking it when it came to her friends and family. She didn't think to much of it, it's not like they cared that she didn't want to be Avery's mate. They would have done something if they did.
She had to fake it so many times to make it seem like she was happy to be here. Which she was not. She wanted to be with Edan.
And if Avery's plan worked, she will one day be with him.
"I'm counting on you, Night."
She stepped out of his room, smoothing out her dress, taking a whiff of the air and strutted to her room when she smelled no one.
👣
She was beginning to panic.
The ceremony was nearly over, nothing had happened yet.
Avery was barely minutes away from marking her. The alpha was reciting some lines that the future Alpha had to do. After today he was going to be the new alpha. So if this falls through, Glory will be luna and it will not be reversable.
Her eyes stayed on Avery throughout the enter ceremony, not once glancing at the crowd. She was too afraid, and because Edan was somewhere amungst that crowd, her fear doubled.
Somewhere up in the balcony he stood. Watching her, waiting for het to mark another male. She didn't want to see the look on his face as much as she ached to see him. However, she was beginning to cave. Every so often she'd flutter her eyes shut, feeling his deathly stare on her. Burning into her skin.
"Glory Ryans."
Her head snapped towards the alpha, Cyrus. He held a knife in her direction, a look of irritation on his face. It wasn't the first time he said her name. Her cheeks burned with embarrassment, now the pack was going to think she wasn't paying attention to Avery ad he said his vows. Which she wasn't, but they didn't need to know that.
She swallowed, nerves wrecking her body, she carefully took the sharp tool. She didn't know what to do with it, because she hadn't been paying attention.
She felt it again, his intense glare. And she gave in. Her eyes not even having to scan the crowd to know where he was, she felt where he was.
Her heart broke as his eyes, cold and vacant stared back. Tears pricked her eyes, still clutching the stupid knife.
"Glory," Alpha Cyrus' voice rung in her ears. "Glory Ryans."
Salty and bitter tears dtarted to slide down her cheeks as she tore her eyes away from the male she loved. Brown eyes staring into the Alpha's blue ones. Then they went back to Edan, gripping the knife so hard her knuckles where beginning to turn white.
But Edan, he was different now.
His eyes weren't emerald anymore. Nor where they cold and vacant.
"Glory!" The alpha barked her name. Tired of the beta females silly behavior.
Glory dropped the knife, the sound of it bouncing captured everyone's attention. The loud clang didn't bother Glory at all as she watched the shackles chained around Edan's arms break.
Something that was nearly impossible.
But that wasn't even the part that shocked Glory the most.
His eyes - once green like the greenest patch of grass, were no longer green. But red - crimson and dangerous. The colour only the strongest alphas held.
His lips - they turned up in a disgusted snarl. Canines growing sharper by the second.
His words - the words he uttered next concealed Glory's face with shock, lips parted in a 'o' shape.
Then, at that particular moment, everything clicked into place.
