Chapter Ten: Lost & Found

Glory woke with a heavy chest that morning. She's been trying to hold it back the last couple of days, but it seemed like it was impossible. It was setting in a month later; guilt.

Glory loved her parents. Glory's parents loved her. The first few weeks she didn't think much of it, but the more she did think, the worse she felt.

"Glory stop moppin' around and collect some firewood," as you could see they were on speaking terms - when he needed her to do something.

She rolled her eyes at him and stood up. Throwing the knife she had so it would stick to a tree trunk. Edan continued to chop wood as Glory took one chunk at a time and carried in over to their cabin, stacking it neatly.

Everest was still recovering. She claimed she was feeling pretty awesome until she heard Edan say they were going to start putting away firewood for the winter. She was pretty quick to say she was still feeling a little ill, and probably still will for the next week or two.

Though Glory knew Everest was obviously lying, she didn't blame her. This job sucks.

"Could you stop that," Edan demanded, he looked like he was about to explode.

"Stop what?" Glory knew what she was doing, she just didn't know he noticed.

"Stop sighing and groaning - it's annoying."

"If it wouldn't take you forever to just chop off one piece of log, maybe I wouldn't be so impatient right now." Glory knew she wasn't being fair, but neither was he.

She suggested a different idea. One that wouldn't take up as much time, but no - he wouldn't listen - because he knows she hates this job.

They've been bickering all morning.

"Chopping wood is a lot of work, Glory." He emphasized her name like he did when he was annoyed, or feeling any kind of unpleasant emotion around her.

"Do you wanna do it?" He glared at her, squinting his eyes. The sweat on his lower back made the old shirt stick to him. "You know what - " he threw the axe to her feet. "I'm not even going to ask. You're the one with the supernatural strength. You do it."

"Why should I? You don't listen to me either, I'm not going to listen to you."

"Oh, my moon!" Everest yelled out. She could hear everything in the cabin. "Don't you have two axe's?"

"No," they both yelled at the same time, with the same amount of irritation.

At the end, Eden just ended up stalking into the forest, and Glory chopping the wood. They were both fueling mad.

"Oh, my moon." Everest was freaking out. Edans been gone for a while. She was pacing back and forth, biting her nails before remembering that it was a bad habit and crossed arms over her chest. Stressed. "Where the hell is he. I am going to kill him so bad when he comes back."

"I don't know, he just stormed off. And honestly - not to be an ass or anything - I don't care."

Glory pushed her feeling for him aside - anyway - she tried to.

"What if he gets bitten by a goner. Those rogues out there are insane and they won't have mercy on him."

"Everest. You worry too much. Edan can very well take care of himself. I am not going out there to find him. He knows these woods better than I do." Glory wasn't going to let the feelings she has for him cloud her judgment.

"I know but - "

"He'll be fine,"

Everest pinched the bridge of her nose and closed her eyes. "What if he's not."

Glory just shrugged her shoulders. She didn't want to be an ass so she kept her mouth shut. She didn't want Edan to be dead. She wanted him to be alive - after all, there was still that part of her that had a strange infatuation about him. Unfortunately, that infatuation wasn't big enough to stop her want to strangle him occasionally.

"Look - I know you two don't always see eye to eye - "

"Try never," Glory mumbled. Leaning against the wall. She knew where Everest was going with this, and she was already feeling guilty.

"My point is, Edan can't shift. Or won't. I wouldn't ask you to go after him if it wasn't a matter of life or death. You see that tree over there," she pointed, Glory groaned and went to go see. Following the gaze of her finger as it directed outside. "We have rules. Number one rule is: do not leave the cabin, or be out of eyesight when the sun hits that tree. He should have been back for three hours. We need to go find him. He could be out there... possibly dead! Or hurt. I've lost nearly all my werewolf abilities I need you to help. Please?"

"Fine," Glory spoke quietly. She was suddenly feeling guilty. She did blame herself for making him leave the cabin grounds, but he was being a butt.

"Look Everest. Maybe I should go look for him by myself. You're still sick - "

"Not a chance. You'll get yourself killed out there."

"I can take care of myself. I'll follow his scent, the rogues will smell us easier if we're together, and I have more strength than you.  It would be suicide going together. I'll follow his scent, when I find him I will apologize, make things right, and if doesn't kill me on the spot, then he can lead us back. Viola."

Everest stared at Glory for a good minute. "So you're willing to risk your life for him? You sure you're not in love with him or something? Not that I would mind, I'm pretty sure he's never even kissed - "

"- okay! Jeez. You're getting carried away. I'm not doing this for him. I'm doing it for you."

"If you're not back in two hours, I'm coming after you."

"Two hours? It might take me that long to find him. Give me till dawn."

"Are you insane?" Everest stared with wide eyes. "You will both be dinner by then."

"In an hour our scents will be non-existent to your nose. You will have to come find us in the darkness. And your vision isn't as sharp as its supposed to be. You have no choice but to give us till dawn. There is no way you're going out there until morning."

Everest had nothing to say. Glory sighed for the umpteenth time that day. "Good. I'll find him and I'll be back. If it's too dark if I find him - "

"You'll find him," Everest reassured. "You have to."

"If we have no choice and it's too dark we'll start coming back as soon as the sun appears."

"Fine," Everest smiled. "Imm'a be the good friend and awesome sister and volunteer to make breakfast tomorrow."

Glory smiled for the first time that day. Everest never volunteers to make breakfast. Or any other meal for that matter. She hates cooking. She'd rather eat raw meat for the rest of her life. It's not like it would affect her.

"I'm looking forward to it."

It definitely would have taken Glory longer to find Edan if Everest was there. With all that chatting she does, and her smell, it would have been distracting. But the path Edan took wasn't that hard to follow, he was the only smell there. Which means, she's probably disturbing his private place.

"What are you doing here?" His voice echoed from ahead. From the tone of his voice, Glory guessed he knew it was her.

"How'd you know it was me?" She walked towards him.

"You take short steps and land your feet lightly on the ground. Not a hard guess."

"But I wasn't walking." Glory gave the slightest smile, so slight that you may think it's your imagination. "I was climbing."

He craned his neck, not to look at her, but so he wouldn't need to speak too loud. Maybe even because he was a little embarrassed about knowing this. "You also take short breathes. So every once in a while, you take a deep breath and its kind of annoying."

Glory's face warmed, she hoped she wasn't blushing, but it's dark so he wouldn't notice.

"What are you doing here?"

"I could ask the same question. The climb up here is dangerous. And because you don't have the healing abilities you once did it could easily kill you."

He chuckled, and it didn't sound happy either. "Yeah? Do you have any idea how many times I've considered letting myself fall so Everest would think that its an accident."

Glory's eyes widened at what he just shared. "Why would you ever wanna do that?"

He shrugged his shoulders. Obviously not thinking much of it. "It's not that I'm depressed. It's just that it would make both our lives so much easier. Especially hers. But Everest doesn't like the easy road. She never has."

"Well, if it costs her your life that is in no way the easy road. Do you have any idea what you mean to her?"

"Yes. That's why I would accidentally fall."

"Than why haven't you?" Glory sat down beside him, despite it making her uneasy. She was sitting only a foot away from the edge of the cliff and the look down was not a calming sight. The fall looked rather painful.

The question surprised him. He expected her to say things that discouraged the idea. "Everest is unpredictable. While I am her greatest weakness. I may also be her greatest support. If I die she could either become what she is destined to become, or she could snap and destroy everything she's supposed to be. Or maybe she would rid herself of existence. If you haven't noticed, she's impossible to read, which is weird because she's been so chatty lately, and since you've barely known her for a year you wouldn't know that she never displays her feeling openly. But enough about me and Everest. How about you?"

"Me?" Glory asked confused.

"Yes. Why are you here?"

"I came to find you. Everest's smelling isn't that good."

He shook his head and looked at his long legs sprawled out in front of him. "I mean why are you here? In the forest? Why'd you leave your pack?"

Glory opened her mouth to speak but no words come out. She didn't want him to know. She didn't want him to know they were looking for her everywhere and they'd look non-stop for the next couple years.

Edan got up and looked down at her. "That's what I thought. C'mon let's go."

He kindly waited for her to get up, she was secretly hoping he wouldn't push her down the edge.

"Follow me. It's easy to lose grip at the top here, one wrong move you fall and you kill us both."

By that time her heart was beating out of her chest. Glory is not a fearless person. Especially when it comes to heights. She breathed in through her nose and breathed out through her mouth.

Like Avery had thought her.

'If only you could see me know. I'd imagine you would be proud Avery. The things I do for to make people trust me, Everest. The things I do - You're darn lucky to have me.'

"What are you waiting for?" He yelled up at her.

She stared down at him, a timid look in her eyes. She felt vulnerable and weak speaking the next words she did, "I'm scared."

Edan's face fell, all annoyance and whatever else it was aside. Then, miraculously, Glory thought she spotted concern on his expression. "Just wait up there, I'll get down and guide you through it."

It seemed forever to her, watching him climb down, the anticipation was killing her. She watched, waiting for him to fall.  When he finally did get down, Glory breathed out the breath she never knew she was holding and cursed herself for being so stupid to climb up here. She had a hard enough trouble to get up here, how did she think the way down was? She should've yelled up here and make him come down. But no, she was an idiot and climbed this damned thing.

'I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die.' She repeated in her mind. She clenched her hands together so the shaking would stop. 'How'd I even get up here?'

"Lower yourself slowly. Make sure you know where you're putting your feet."

'I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die - '

"Yeah. That's it. Hold the rocks tight - "

'Believe me, I am.'

"No, no, no! Don't put your foot where it's not sturdy!"

'I'm definitely going to die. After all of this?'

"Okay. You're doing great you're almost halfway down," Glory wasn't sure if his words of encouragement where calming or making her heart beat faster in fear.

She lowered herself more, trying not to think of the many loose rocks and the fall that would end her life.

'How the hell did I even get up there? How did I not think about coming down from this stupid thing?'

Her brain filled with thoughts and the sound her own heart beating pounded in her ears. Eventually, she couldn't even hear her thoughts.

She barely noticed that Edan had placed the tip of his fingers on the side of her waist, then his hands and soon his arms wrapped around her body. Lifting her off the rock she was holding on to much too tight. He lowered her to the ground, softly, steadily. He held her until he noticed her heart rate going down.

He removed his hands from her body and she turned around to face him, unaware of how close they had been standing. She was barely inches from his body.

Her body grew hot when she realized she had looked at his lips. Pink and plump, as if he had been biting them. She looked at his feet. Barefoot.

She looked at him, the beginning of a question forming on her tongue. She shut her mouth when she accidentally looked him straight in the eyes and he was staring right back at her.

The green in his eyes, although with it being terribly dark outside, with only the light of the brightly lit moon. They were shining more than she had ever noticed. It made her stomach feel unnaturally weird.

And her heart - it started to skip beats when his eyes lashes fluttered and his gaze moved towards her lips.

His eyes flickered up to hers again. The moon hitting his iris' just at the right angle. His eyes were glowing - and it was making Glory even more infatuated.

His eyes wondered to her lips once more - if you weren't paying attention you wouldn't even have noticed it - and than looked at her eyes again.

"We should get going. Everest is going to kill me," he spoke quietly as if to not disturb the thing that was happening between them.

Glory nodded her head, "yeah, we should."

He looked at the ground, trying to snap out of his daze and backed-up. "I'll lead the way."

They were halfway back home with nothing but the sound of leaves and twigs being crushed under their feet. Glory wanted to ask him a billion questions, most of which she was unable to say in words. There were also a lot of things she wanted to say to him, an apology was one of them.

"Hey, um Edan?" She whispered. Afraid to disturb the peace.

"Yeah?"

She didn't reply instantly, thinking of how to phrase her sentence. "I'm sorry for, umm - I'm sorry for being bitchy. And for invading your place. . ." She was trying to apologize. She was never good at those.

He just shrugged his shoulders.

She almost stopped walking to get his attention. She wanted a response. She wanted to know if he accepted her apology. She felt irrelevant.

"Why do you hate me so much?"

She didn't want to say that out loud but she did and this time she did get a reaction.

She didn't even notice that he abruptly stopped walking, she nearly walked into him.

"Edan!"

He turned around and looked at her, raising an eyebrow.

"I almost walked into you!"

"Than watch where you're going."

She rolled her eyes and they continued walking.

"I don't hate you, Glory," he silently replied a couple, painful minutes later.

"Than why are you always such an ass?"

"It's Everest."

"What?" Every time a word left his lips she kept getting more confused.

"What does Everest have to do with this?"

He stopped walking, again. Glory nearly slapped him. He looked her dead in the eye, and without blinking and told her, "everything."

He turned and walked forward again. Glory breathed out through her nose, annoyed.

"Then why don't you tell me?"

"Because I'm not sure if I trust you."

"Why not?"

"Because."

"Because of what?" Glory almost yelled.

She's been with them for almost a month. She gave her all to impress the both of them. Did everything they've asked. What more could he possibly want? She's been nothing but good to them - anyways she's tried. She tried to be his friend, its going good - very good with Everest. But Edan just wouldn't let her in, even slightly, no matter how hard she tried. Maybe it was that she has been trying too hard. It's just that lately, the last couple days she's been saying whats on her mind. It did, admittedly make her feel better, and kept from thinking about him all day. It kept her from thinking all the stupid things she wanted to say to him.

"Because of Everest."

She wanted to yell at top of her lungs, but she controlled it. The full moon was near, she could feel it, it always made her emotions more real. Instead of letting her push them down, the full moon tried to push them out.

"That doesn't make sense," she worded slowly. She clenched her fists. And unclenched. And clenched.

She wanted to smash his head against a tree, kiss him and kill him, and kiss him again.

He stopped walking again.

"Would you stop that? Dear Moon, I've almost walked into you three times already."

She kept on walking, in front of him, even though she had no idea where she was going.

He let her. There were so many things he wanted to say to her but wouldn't allow himself. He knew the full moon was only a couple days away and it was messing with her emotions. That didn't mean they weren't real. He knew she had been holding back her anger since the day she met him. The loneliness. The feeling that they didn't want her there.

The moon doesn't lie, and if it's less than three days away that makes every emotion real. It's almost impossible to lie with emotions with the moon this close.

For Edan it's easy, he's barely even a werewolf anymore. The only werewolf ability he's got left is his healing and some of his strength. Though most of his strength was earned, not given.

Tonight, however, at the bottom of the cliff, the moon had a hold of him for the first time in three years.
