Chapter 1.2 || Rita

Chaos is everywhere. People are yelling and running as if they don't know any better. The few bloodied humans are walking slowly and seem vicious as if they are out to kill.

The ground shakes again, this time harder than before.

I feel tears start to form on my eyes. I bite my lip and wipe my tears away with my arm. I can't cry now. I have to be strong.

I look around me for a general location on where I am.

I am in a residential low-income neighborhood as the houses are smaller and not taken care of, many of them looking poorly built. I see an apartment as well that is only a few stories tall. I am standing in a four way intersection with the crashed bus in the middle of it. I conclude that I have absolutely no idea where I am.

Being my apprehensive self, I break into a run with no thought on where I am going. I run past unfamiliar houses, avoiding the bloodied people. I continue to run long after I got tired. I took random turns in an attempt to get out of this neighborhood, as if it was a labyrinth. As long as I continued going and got out of here, then maybe everything would be normal.

I stop, out of breath. My heart was pounding and my mouth was dry. My legs were shaky. I collapse onto the ground, unable to go any further. I just wanted to die.

I looked around at my surroundings, finally recognizing things. I saw three fast food chains across the road on my left, which all of them had constant competition. I had went to all three of those fast food chains before; the workers of the fast food chain of each tried to speak negatively of the other two and asked you how your experience could be improved in an attempt to make you come back next time. To the right of me was a building called "Twilight Dolls", in which I had never seen anyone go into but wasn't out of business. The building down from that was a small building for lease where the store there changed monthly. There was the local gaming store I was a frequent at a couple doors down from that. The notable buildings around here made me feel safer, and I chuckled.

I noticed that there were few people walking around; I only saw several people walking. Only one of them was one of the bloodied people. It was so much quieter over here, compared to all the ruckus where the bus crashed.

I then noticed how it was cloudy and dark now, as if it was to rain soon. I think it would be best to take shelter. I look around again to see if there is anywhere that would be safe to go. The gaming store would be my best bet, saying that I go there so often.

I slowly stand up, my legs still wobbly to some extent. I run a few buildings down to the gaming store, even though running is a bad idea. By the time I reached it I was feeling as if I could pass out.

I pull open the heavy glass door of the moderately sized two-story gray building with huge glass windows on the front side of the building, one on each floor.

The inside of the gaming shop has two floors, with rows of white shelves filled with video games on both floors. The first floor has the counter where you buy things, while the second floor has a gaming counsel.

"Hello, welcome to Chill Gaming," the chill store owner who is obsessed with video games and zombies, Anton, calls out.

"Help..."

"Is something wrong?" Anton asks.

I collapse to the ground. I wake up to find Anton next to me, waiting for me to wake up.

"Rita, are you alright? I was about to call an ambulance," he says to me, with a phone in his hand. Anton has always been this nice to me, and I'm glad about that. I sort of considered him a friend, but not really since he was at least 5 years older than me.

"I'm fine, give me a minute."

Anton waits while I take a few minutes to rest. I was so careless. I shouldn't have been running so much, it really tired me out.

"So what happened?" Anton asks after a few minutes.

"Some of the people out there... I have no idea what's happened... They... They... are acting like they want to kill or something like that." I inform him.

"Zombies," he says.

"That's..." I start, but then I stop. I freeze. What if it was zombies? It's not that unrealistic... No way... Haha... It's just Anton overreacting...

"Come on, let's go."

"Where?"

"In the basement. It's safer there."

"You've got to be kidding me, Anton," I say.

"I'm not," he replies, looking at me dead serious in the eyes.

"Do I have to follow you?"

"Yes! There are zombies out there and we need to stay safe. I'll drag you if I have to," he says. I find that I have no choice but to follow him behind the counter into the back room of the store.

The back room has wood flooring, unlike the rest of the building which has the typical white tiles seen in many stores. There seems to be a countless number of boxes in here, some of them opened. I then notice two doors back here. I expect Anton to walk over to one of them, but he doesn't. He pushes a few boxes out of the way and picks up part of the wood floor. I realize that this enters into the basement, as there is a wooden ladder down.

"You go down first," Anton instructs me, pointing to the ladder built into the wall.

"What are you going to do? Aren't you coming?" I ask.

"Lock the doors. Get everyone else that's in the shop," he says.

I nod, even though I think this is ridiculous. There's no way in hell that those are zombies. Zombies don't exist. Period.

I stand there, wondering what to do. Anton is taking this way too far and I'm not sure whether to leave or stay. I don't even know if I could leave, saying that Anton is so persistent about all of this. I'm sure it will be over in a few hours, so what's the point? Anton is over reacting, and I'm undecided on what to do.

I'm over reacting too. I realize. I shouldn't have ran after getting out of the bus. I should have called home. It's a miracle I didn't get hurt in the accident. I could be dead right now.

I hear the footsteps of Anton and others. I make up my mind and hurry down the ladder, finding myself in a dark room with cement flooring where only light is coming from above. A few people enter—whose faces I can't get a good look at. Anton then hurries down, a flashlight in hand.

"They're coming," he says in a deadpan tone.

"What's coming?" a young-looking woman with long blonde hair, fair skin, and blue eyes with too much makeup asks in a Brooklyn accent, linking arms with another man who looks to be the same age as her.

"Laura, he doesn't know what he's talking about," the man replies confidently. He has fair skin, blond hair, and blue eyes as well. "Let's go."

Anton steps in the way of the ladder. "I'm not letting anyone leave here."

"Fight me," says the blond haired man, I assume as a threat.

"No," Anton replies calmly.

The blond haired man laughs. "I could rip you to shreds."

"I doubt it."

"How dare you! If you calm to be so strong then you must fight me!"

"I was only stating the facts," replies Anton.

The blond haired main—who turns out to be named Eric—gets into an argument with Anton, and eventually pushes Anton out of the way and leaves.

"Hey!" calls Anton. "Where do you think your—"

Laura cuts Anton off. "Leave him be."

"Why? Isn't that your boyfriend?" Anton asks curiously.

"Yes, but I'm actually a lesbian who never loved him in the first place. I only dated him since he was so persistent. I'm Laura, by the way. What's your name?"

We all end up introducing ourselves. Besides Anton, Laura and I there are 3 other people. There is an African American girl around my age named Kyra who has brown eyes and brown straightened hair and twins Axel and Matt in their late 30's, both of them having brown hair and blue eyes but only Axel having a beard.

We start to hear footsteps—too many footsteps for it to be just one person. What's happening? That can't just be Eric, can it? Are more people coming? I hope it's just that...

"I was bit!" we all hear Eric yell.

My heart starts beating faster. Fear washes over me as it gets harder for me to breathe.

"We need to get out of here. Now. Gather all our things. If anyone has a weapon, you're going to need to use it," Anton commands.

"I'll go first," says Axel, with a knife in his pocket. Before Anton can stop him from doing so he is already climbing up the ladder. Anton gives him a look as to why he would casually have a knife on him.

Others start hurrying up the ladder as we hear Axel fighting. He then cries out in pain. A door opens and then slams shut harder than I've ever heard a door slam in my life. The very last thing Axel yells is, "Make a run for it! It's only a matter of time before they break down this door!"

I am the last one left. I slowly stand up, knowing that if I don't leave now I'm doomed.
