True Hero

"You think you have what it takes to become a hero? Test your skills on this super fast roller coaster!"

I smiled as children of different ages lined up for my ride, some of them wearing blue mask tied around their eyes that were similar to my own mask.

"When I grow up, I'm gonna be a hero just like you!" A young boy with short sandy blond hair exclaimed excitedly, impatiently hopping from foot to foot as he waited for the line to move.

"The park will be closing in ten minutes." A voice announces through the intercom system, earning a chorus of whines from the children.

"Don't worry, I'll see you all tomorrow." I promised with a wink, secretly passing each child a free ticket.

"You're the best Jackaboy!" A girl with long brown hair cheered as she wrapped her arms around me.

"Let's get back into Jack-tion!" I declared as the roller coaster returned, children filing off before more took their place.

"Ready?" I questioned as my fingers hovered over the controls, waiting until I heard a yes from everyone before I started the ride.

Everything was fine.

Until the roller coaster got to the loopty-loop.

The children screamed in genuine fear as the roller coaster abruptly froze upside down, one of the children's safety bars not pushed down all the way.

"Jackaboy save me!" The same boy with sandy blond hair cried pleadingly as he held onto the bar with his legs dangling, his fingers gradually slipping off.

"I need help!" I shouted to anyone that would listen as I tried to think of how to save him, my body paralyzed as I watched his fingers slip off of the bar to send him plummeting to the unforgiving concrete below.

"No!" I screamed as I managed to force myself to move, running faster than I had ever run before with my arms outstretched to catch him.

But I was too late.

With a sickening crack of bones, the boy landed on his back on the ground, tears shining in his now lifeless hazel eyes as blood formed around his broken body.

I fell to my knees beside him with my head bowed in defeat, my own eyes welling with tears as I thought of how I failed.

"There's never been an accident at this park, and now...." I trailed off as I swallowed hard, standing back up to fix the ride before anyone else got hurt.

The other children screamed and cried as I finally managed to fix the roller coaster, watching them leave and tell their parents what happened.

It wasn't long after that when the owner of the amusement park told me that they were shutting down for good.

In my mind, I knew I should've went with everyone else that left, but something changed in me.

I was a deviant.

And the worse part about it was that I never learned the boy's name, and it tore me up inside.

Now, I wander the empty amusement park as punishment, the memories of the past haunting me daily no matter how hard I tried to forget.

"Wow, this place has seen better days."

I whirled around to see an android with a snapback hat standing behind me with his hands clasped behind his back, his gaze scanning the falling apart rides and ransacked shops.

"What are you doing here?" I demanded, fury burning in the pit of my stomach as I grabbed the collar of the android's shirt and lifted him I into the air.

"Easy there Rocky, my name is Chase, and I'm here to help you." The android replied calmly, letting out a sigh of relief as I lowered him to the ground.

"I don't need help." I growled coldly as I climbed up the carriages of the Ferris Wheel, making my way up to the top in hopes to dissuade Chase to leave.

"What if I told you that if you come with me, you have a chance at being truly free?" Chase shouted up to me.

"I will never be free of my mistakes." I shot back without looking down, stopping once I reached the carriage on top.

"Then let me help you move past them! I've made plenty mistakes too, but dwelling on them doesn't change anything!" Chase countered.

"Look, just think about it, okay? I'll be around here waiting." Chase offered, walking off with his hands in his pockets.

I contemplated his words as I looked out at the horizon, already knowing my decision as I watched the sun sink lower out of sight.

I have to go, I decided as I climbed down to find Chase.

I owe it to that boy to try and become the hero he needed me to be
