A Playlist? A Playlist!
Hello! I was going to wait to post this until tomorrow, but quite frankly, I'm too excited. So here we are!
As you might have guessed from the title, this isn't an update, but a playlist! One with 114 songs, at that! Music has been such a fundamental part of writing this story, but I'm admittedly rather shy about my music taste and even more shy about my brainstorming process, so I've kept my playlists largely to myself, until now!
Presenting: In the Melancholy Moonlight, The Playlist!
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2sLSJ0g1e2kwyvu7yuntRX?si=817fb09569264159
Long story short (scroll to the bottom of the playlist to see why this is funny) I pulled highlights from all of my playlists and put these songs in chronological order within my story! You can absolutely listen to this on shuffle, but if you're interested in listening to this in order, keep reading to find out the approximate timeline of everything. I will likely make changes to this playlist over time as I write more of the story, but as of right now, this playlist does stretch from beginning to end! Happy listening, everyone! I can't wait to hear what you all think. :)
~
Timeline + brief and somewhat scatter-brained explanations!
~
1991 — setting the stage
The Light (Cedric + Lucy + idea of "home" and "light" being synonymous)
Be Brave (Lucy, Gryffindor, you get the vibes)
Six (about Cedric, primarily, and his various anxieties)
~
1992, Part One — exploring character dynamics and relationships
Five (Hermione and Lucy vibes, but mainly Hermione)
Leaving Hogwarts (first use of the official soundtrack + celebration of the end of Year 1 for the quartet!)
7 Years (Ginny turning 11, thinking about the future for the first real time)
~
1992, Part Two — plot of Chamber of Secrets
I'll Keep You Safe (everyone wanting to protect Hermione, Lucy especially; interesting parallel to later in the story where Hermione is the primary person making sure everyone else is safe)
Fawkes the Phoenix (lovely piece, relevant to the plot, AND FORESHADOWING TOO, TO SOMETHING I HAVEN'T WRITTEN YET BUT MAKES ME VERY EXCITED!)
Yellow (Cedric vibes as well as general Hufflepuff vibes!)
Reunion of Friends (again, lovely piece that is plot relevant, gotta love my quirky quartet being reunited)
~
September 1993 to June 1994 — Prisoner of Azkaban fun!
Don't You Worry Child (I wish so desperately I could actually say this to Harry and Lucy, but seeing as I can't, I put this song on the playlist instead, they both need to hear it, with the dementors and all)
Buckbeak's Flight (VERY FUN AND SYMBOLIC!)
It's Nice to Have a Friend (introduction to recurring theme, this is the official Larry anthem, I don't make the rules)
You Will Find Me (EVERLIN VIBES!)
The Whomping Willow and the Snowball Fight (my favorite John Williams composition of all time HAD to be on this playlist, sorry, it lightens the mood after the emotional devastation of the song before it)
Long Live (Quidditch fun and Larry moments and Gryffindor team vibes!)
The Call (Cedric leaving, Remus leaving, the end of Year 3)
~
August 1994 to November 1994 — Cedric-focused reflection and a shift of mood suggesting the darkness of the future
Three (Cedric trying to balance his dad's expectations with his own desires in regards to the Triwizard Tournament)
The Dark Mark (the fiasco at the Quidditch World Cup)
Earth (Lucy being secretly unsure about the Tournament, general sense of apprehension and fear for the future)
~
December 25, 1994 to June 23, 1995 — "Okay, maybe this tournament is alright... right?"
Magic Works (Yule Ball, Cedric's favorite song, Lucy + George + Harry dynamic introduced)
Taste (Lucy's birthday and general good vibes, but don't get used to it, this is the last truly happy song for a while)
Shadows (doubt creeping in before the third task)
~
June 24, 1995 and its immediate aftermath — trying and failing to understand what a world without Cedric will be
The Next Right Thing (the moment of impact, when tragedy strikes; the first time I saw this movie, I knew I had to include this song, it fits Lucy too well)
Another Year Ends (going home, no lyrics because there's nothing really to say yet)
Sorrow (rather self-explanatory really; I use this song in multiple chapters later, but this is really where the theme is introduced and most poignant)
The Moon Song (Henry to Cedric)
Hogwarts Hymn (sweet and melancholy, sense of finality)
~
Summer of 1995 — the trauma continues
enough for you (Lucy to her parents after they've died, wondering why she was never enough even though she did her best)
Birds (Cedric's patronus was a bird and this song is just a beautiful description of hope and love after loss and grief)
Flight of the Order of the Phoenix (the plot continues; no rest for the weary, am I right?)
Talking to Myself (Lucy and Harry are both shutting each other out and the frustration is just building and building because they want to help each other but can't)
Anger (I officially use this song later in the story, but I wanted to have it somewhat closer to the sad songs because of the swings between sadness and anger Lucy describes, and it's a recurring theme anyway)
~
The rest of 1995 — the start of a new chapter
Oh My Dear (Lucy talking to Harry and telling him her secrets!)Burn Out (everyone begging Lucy not to give up, Harry especially)
Dumbledore's Army (important good vibes, the first in a while!)
Don't Forget to Breathe (featured in an important chapter and 10/10 song in general, literally one of my favorite songs of all time)
Bird With a Broken Wing (absolute bop, very symbolic of the way Lucy has see herself throughout her life as being out of place and set apart first by her lycanthropy then by losing Cedric and then by losing her parents then by being attacked by Umbridge and... you get the idea)
In the Embers (another one of my all-time favorite songs, very symbolic of Cedric's legacy and the impact its had on the plot even though he's gone)
evermore (FEATURED IN A VERY IMPORTANT CHAPTER AND VERY RELEVANT TO THE PLOT AND VERY ESSENTIAL TO UNDERSTAND LUCY AND HARRY'S RELATIONSHIP IN THAT MOMENT)
Pluto (Lucy finally letting go and trying to let herself just exist for the first time)
Talking to the Moon (Everlin vibes again, directed at Cedric now as well!)
~
1996, Part One — Lucy begins a journey of self-discovery as the war looms closer, with the help of the Weasley twins
I HAVEN'T WRITTEN THIS YET BUT THERE IS NOTHING TOO SPOILER-ISH YET SO YOU CAN KEEP READING, I'M BEING VAGUE ON PURPOSE.
Four (Lucy's enneagram type! Very important to understanding her character!)
Darkness Takes Over (to Lucy, congratulations on learning more about yourself and finding a bit of emotional respite over the holidays but the Azkaban breakout just occurred and now the real world is pounding at your door and demanding at least a little bit of trauma resolution)
Brother (introduction to the increasingly important role of the Weasley twins in the story; they've always been there for Lucy, but now they're going to start to officially stepping into the "older brother" role; they won't be like Cedric much at all, but they're going to realize Lucy needs someone, or two someones, like that in her life and they're up for the task)
Sweater Weather (it had to be in here at some point y'all, Cedric and Ginny and George all scream bi energy, this seemed like a good place for it)
Seven (the twins are getting excited about WWW and they want Lucy to get excited too, because she's part of their plan and always has been)
Dancing With the Devil (essentially, Umbridge sucks, you'll see when you get there)
Where Does the Time Go (George reflecting on his time at Hogwarts the night before he leaves with Fred)
Fireworks (self-explanatory, this is epic)
Do My Own Thing (Lucy and the twins are all doing their own thing and they deserve it so here's a lighthearted bop!)
~
1996, Part Two — LOVE IS FINALLY IN THE AIR
Older (Henry reflecting on life and accepting that he's moving on)
I Won't Say I'm In Love (Lucy and Hermione are both down bad but they're not about to admit it to anyone, even themselves, especially themselves)
Wonder (Harry, do you fancy Lucy?)
Falling In Love (I'm gonna take that as a yes)
This Side of Paradise (mutual pining!)
Don't Blame Me (vibes for the Department of Mysteries fight)
Loved Ones and Leaving (oh no, Lucy and Harry have to say goodbye for summer and they're both absolutely smitten with the other person, whatever will they do?)
~
SUMMER OF 1996, PART ONE — MILD SPOILERS AHEAD
Remember that you can always come back later! I'll be updating this with more specific descriptions in the parentheses as I write the story. :) I'm being vague on purpose, so you can read this if you want without having anything specific spoiled, but I have no choice but to allude to main events, so read at your own risk. Without any further ado...
Long story short, Lucy spends the summer working at WWW. She lives with the twins in their flat, and they just have a blast. They're determined to redeem the horrible summer of 1995 as much as possible despite the war that's getting closer and closer every day.
Wolves (first and foremost, the twins have to protect her because of her importance to the war effort and the interest both sides have in her, but they don't care about this extra responsibility because they love her)
Wizard Wheezes (good vibes working in the shop)
Lost Boys (SUCH A BOP, VERY GOOD SONG, FINALLY GETTING A BIT OF FUN TEENAGE RECKLESSNESS)
Live While We're Young (very self-explanatory)
~
SUMMER OF 1996, PART TWO — THE REAL WORLD
Delicate (MUTUAL PINING!)
brutal (Harry and Lucy are both being dragged through the mud)
Of Love & War (how will they cope?)
~

I Hear a Symphony [SPOILER REDCATED]
willow [SPOILER REDCATED]
Line Without a Hook [SPOILER REDCATED]

1996, Part Four — back to school, back to reality, back to the looming war, all after a surprisingly wonderfully almost-normal summer
In Noctem (sets the tone, lovely and ominous piece, I love the lyrics)
Hold Her (Harry's first [spoiler redacted] and he can't sleep)
I Know Places [spoiler redacted]
Walking the Wire (everyone's on edge, everyone's scared, everyone's a simp, everyone's in love, et cetera, et cetera)
Into the Rushes (I'm honestly not sure yet if I want to include the Burrow burning or not, but I added this just in case I decided to go that route)
~
1997, Part One — the deep breath before the plunge
Superman (for Harry)
Dream Catcher (for Lucy)
Requiem on Water [spoiler redacted]
Deep Water [spoiler redacted]
Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince [spoiler redacted]
The Friends (plot relevant, very pretty piece, nice quartet moment before parting ways for the summer)
West (general good vibes, reassurance despite apprehension)
~
1997, Part Two, through the afternoon of May 1, 1998 — the plunge
Hopefully not a spoiler since you hopefully saw this coming, but Lucy and Harry are together by this point!
Sky Battle (plot, very significant, massive Larry moment)
Mars (this is war now)
Whatever It Takes (the quartet is on their own at this point)
Fireplaces Escape (it's plot, it's a banger, what more reason does one need?)
epiphany (Ron being injured, realizations about the stakes of the war, remembering Cedric)
Nine (Harry reflecting on the journey)
O Children (trying to figure out how to incorporate the movie scene; I'll probably have Harry and Lucy dance while Hermione is asleep or outside, but I'm not completely sure what I'll do here but the song will be involved somehow)
this is me trying (they're all trying, but I'm realizing how well this song would fit with Ron after he comes back)
Dragon Flight (the beginning of the end)
~
The evening of May 1, 1998 through May 3, 1998 — the Battle of Hogwarts and its immediate aftermath
Till Forever Falls Apart (one last Larry moment before the battle begins)
Meet Me on the Battlefield (self-explanatory, everyone coming together one last time)
Sign of the Times (think epic battle montage during this song)
Change (the exuberant triumph)
Walking in the Wind (a more solemn reflection on all that was lost tampered with the hope that victory brings)
~
The summer of 1998 — reflecting on what comes next, with an emphasis on love
Seasons (I hear this in Harry's voice, but I'm open to other interpretations if anyone has any)
peace (Lucy and Harry both feel this way about their relationship, but they love each other too deeply to even care)
Trying My Best (everyone just trying to get by, but this song is for Harry especially since he's the hero and nearly everyone expects altogether too much of him)
~
September 1, 1998 — everyone returns to Hogwarts for an eighth year
Let the New Begin (self-explanatory)
~
The rest of 1998 through May 1999 — Larry learning how to love each other the way they've always wanted to but never could
This Love (Lucy's perspective, the lyrics fit really well with Harry coming back from the dead and all of that)
Two [spoiler redacted]
Temporary Love (just general Larry vibes, good vibes, sweet vibes, all the vibes)
Fearless (a happier, more upbeat love song because they're recovering)
~
June 1999 — graduation, the press, and other challenges
The Graduate (I just love this song; and again, graduation; it'll happen earlier in the year than it does in canon for a number of reasons that will become clear later, so put this within the first week of June in your minds)
Drag Me Down (Lucy and Harry: "We did it, we made it through the war and through school, we're unstoppable!"; second week of June)
Style (Lucy and Harry: "We're the wizarding world's 'it' couple, this is great!"; second week of June)
mirrorball (Lucy: "This is... a lot of pressure. I'm still a werewolf, I have to try to conform to what they want of me—"; third week of June)
She's So Gone (Lucy: "Yeah, screw this."; third week of June)New Romantics (Everyone who's been scrutinized in the press following Lucy's lead: "Yeah, screw this!"; third week of June, it's a busy week)
Eight (Lucy reflecting on her life as she watches herself being slandered by the press following her [spoiler redacted] and deciding she's had it up to here)(Un)Lost (the results of this reflection)
Everywhere I Go (Larry vibes)
Wherever You Go (Larry vibes continued)
So Will I (Larry vibes continued still)

Woodwork [SPOILER REDACTED]
it's time to go [SPOILER REDACTED]

If you listen to this last song in particular, I can guarantee you will be very very lost. My advice to you is not to worry about it and try to forget it exists. I'm not giving you anything, sorry, this is too exciting and too secretive and I was debating whether or not to even include this song because of how jarring it will be without context. Just don't worry about it, okay? :)
You & I (see, everything works out just fine)

Well... there you have it! I'll come back and fill in details as I write the story, but this is the gist of Moonlight, really. :) I hope you all enjoy listening to the playlist as much as I enjoyed making it for you! Thank you for your patience with my lack of updates this past week, and I hope this is enough to hold you all over until next Wednesday. Have a good week! Love you!
