Chapter Sixty-Two: Coordinates

"Dude," Dean said. "I was cleaning out the Impala and I found this." He held up a leather-bound book.

"Whose is it?" Sam asked.

"It has the initials H.W. Wasn't Dad's dad named Henry?"

"I think so," Sam replied. Dean tossed the book on the table so they could look at it.

Ruby fell back asleep, but was woken up sometime later. Sam had picked her up and was carrying her to the car. "Where are we going?" she asked sleepily.

He set her down on her feet and she slid into the Impala. "We found our grandfather's journal. It has coordinates in it, so we're going there. Only one person he mentioned in there is still alive, so Julissa's going to talk to him."

"Can I look at the journal?" she asked.

"Sure," Sam said, handing it to her. "I skimmed it already, but yeah. The coordinates are in Lebanon, Kansas, so we've got a long drive ahead of us."

"This isn't what I was expecting at all," Dean said.

There were some stairs that lead to a door. It looked like the place was underground. It was probably huge. "It looks like a ... bunker," Ruby said.

"I'm gonna try to pick the lock," Dean said. He went down the stairs.

"Somehow, I doubt that's going to work," Sam said. Dean waved him off. Sam glanced over at Ruby. "So, what'd you find out from the journal?"

"A lot. Too much to remember. Pregnancy brain. There was stuff in there that I'd never heard about. Henry was a Man of Letters."

"A what?" Sam asked.

"They know, well, knew, everything about monsters, but they didn't hunt or kill them. Glorified librarians. They were all killed off around the fifties or sixties, I don't remember. That's why we've never heard of them."

"They kind of sound like pretentious dicks," Sam said. Ruby laughed. "Hey, you, uh, don't look so good. Do you want to sit down?"

"No. I should probably be more active than I have been. Let's take a walk." The bunker was in the middle of a forest; it was gorgeous. It was pretty cold, but Ruby was only wearing shorts and a thin tee shirt. Her fever had been insanely high for the last few days.

"Alright. Dean, we're going for a walk!"

"Good idea. This'll probably take a while!" Dean yelled back.

Sam slipped his arm around Ruby's waist, ready to catch her if she fell. They walked slowly down a path. The leaves of the tall trees made a canopy over their heads. "So," Sam said. "Any baby names in mind?"

"Well, from what I've read in Henry's journal, he seems like a pretty good guy. We could name the baby after him. I also like Tate and James."

"Tate is interesting. I'm not sure about Henry. I mean, we didn't really know him, and you said he was a part of a group of 'glorified librarians.'"

"Okay. We'll put Henry aside for now. We should pick out a name soon, though." Ruby leaned into Sam and sighed.

"You ready to go back?" Sam asked.

"Let's just sit down." They went over to a huge rock on the side of the path and sat down. The stone was cool against her skin. They stayed there for awhile, listening to the birds and wind.

Dean called Sam not much later. He hadn't been able to pick the lock, but he thought Sam might be able to. So, they walked back to the bunker. When they got back, Dean asked "How far did you two hike? I called you fifteen minutes ago."

"Not far," Sam answered. "It's just, uh, we were walking slow. Where do you want to sit?" he asked Ruby.

"I'll go with you," she said. They started walking down the stairs. Ruby gripped the railing. She hadn't really had the best balance lately, and falling down concrete stairs was the last thing she needed. The reached the bottom and Dean handed Sam the lock pick. Ruby sat down on the last step and Dean sat next to her. They watched Sam work.

"What do you think is in there?" Ruby asked Dean. The door itself was huge. Above ground, there was a huge building. It looked like an abandoned factory. She thought there was probably a lot underground.

"Who knows. I bet it's awesome." Dean picked up a beer bottle and drank.

"When did you even get that?" she asked, pointing to the beer.

"Awhile ago from the cooler. You know, I think I've got some sandwiches or something in the car. I could get you something."

Ruby sighed, but Sam spoke up. "You really should eat something. It might make you feel better. I know it'll make me feel better." He hadn't looked up from what he was doing. He sounded casual, but Ruby knew he was serious.

"Fine. Just bring me whatever."

"Awesome," Dean said. He went up to the car and brought back fries.

She took them from Dean and took a small bite of one. "Mmm. These are like deep fried crack." Sam laughed.

Dean's phone rang, and he picked up immediately. "Julie, hey." He smiled. He was like a little boy with a crush. "Yeah, we are. How'd you know?" Dean was still on the phone with her when Sam gave up with the door. He leaned against the wall and looked at Ruby. She gestured for him to come forward and help her up.

They left Dean alone and walked up to the car. Sam opened the trunk and took out a bottle of water and a blanket. He handed her the bottle of water and said, "Drink." He laid the blanket out on the ground. He laid down and said, "Come here." She laid beside him and put her head on his chest.

"We should just sleep here tonight. Outside. It's nice," she mumbled. The sun was setting. It had grown so quiet. She closed her eyes.

She heard Dean's shoes, crunching leaves underneath them. She kept her eyes closed. "Julissa said that the guy she talked to was in the Men of Letters. He still had a key to this place and he gave it to her. She'll be here in a few hours. Mom, Kevin, and Cas are coming too. Not sure when they'll get here."

"Okay. Let's just stay here until Julissa gets here with the key. I don't want to move Ruby." Then it was quiet. Ruby breathed in Sam's smell - old books and men's deodorant. She fell asleep quickly.
