Four: Author's Pov
Far away, a pair of footsteps echoed on the opposite side of the road. The wind flowed with her as she huffed, clutching a purse in her hands. She had just stolen it from a woman buying vegetables at the market, and now the woman's husband was chasing her. The girl wasn't scared; she ran with a smirk, like this was routine for her. She darted about like a squirrel, almost as if she believed her legs might lift her off the ground at any moment.
She ran swiftly, jumping from one speed bump to another, while her hands worked to push the purse under her chest. With quick glances at the traffic light and the cars, she dashed across the road, thinking she might hide among the big, luxurious vehicles—ones she could never even dream of affording.
Her antics caught the attention of everyone in their vehicles, all eyes on the girl being wildly chased by a man.
As she noticed the people on bikes and scooters halted in traffic, her eyes widened. She saw a man walking ahead of her and calculated his steps. Glancing back, she saw the man chasing her was no longer in sight, so she slowed down a bit.
She bent forward slightly and pursed her lips. As she got close to the man ahead, she slammed her left shoulder into his back with full force, making him stumble and sending both of them sprawling onto the road.
She quickly patted down his body, and when she found what she was looking for, her smirk widened. She pretended to groan into his neck, then stood up, leaving the bewildered man lying there. She bowed with a quick "sorry," glanced back to ensure her pursuer wasn't around, and then took off running again.
A hot breeze swept past her, making her stop in the middle of the busy road. Something made her tilt her head upwards, and her eyes widened as she read the name on the mansion. Her lips parted, trembling like a child's as she took in every word.
"GENOVESE MANSION"
Her eyes sparkled as she admired the massive building spreading across a large area. She tried to take in the entire structure at once, but it was impossible. The mansion was painted a creamy white, with a roof covered in blue denim-colored bricks.
A loud horn from behind jolted her back to reality. She flinched, scowled at the source of the noise, and then resumed running. She tucked both purses securely, one in her pocket and the other in her hand, and made a final sprint home, excited to tell her sister she had swiped two purses today.
The girl entered the house and tiptoed inside, trying not to make a sound. She froze when a voice stopped her in her tracks. Turning her head, she bit her lip, a nervous smile playing on her lips. She opened her mouth, ready to brush off the moment, but flinched when her sister's loud voice startled her, waking up her nerves.
"Where the hell have you been all day?"
Her sister tilted her head, locking eyes with her, and saw the fear in them. She shouted again, "I asked you a question, Simon!"
Simon's smile vanished. She looked at her sister, as she trembled to speak.
