ONE - TIP TOE

The sun had barely peaked over the hills in the distance when Kaia Gold pulled herself out of bed. Not her bed, but a bed. It was just after dawn and the factories were slowly starting to come alive, footsteps and voices on the street below was what had woken her, though she was barely asleep anyway.

She looked down at the gentleman who's name she'd forgotten, shrugging to herself when she gave up trying to remember. She glanced around the room, picking up her clothes from the back of chairs and underneath a wooden dresser.

Pausing, she looked at a golden wrist watch that sat on the top of a chest of drawers beside a silver edged mirror. She looked behind her in the reflection of the mirror to make sure he was still sleeping before slipping the watch into her clutch bag and disappearing out of the room.

Tip-toeing down the stairs, Kaia winced and gritted her teeth when a single floorboard creaked beneath her feet.

"Will? Are you awake?"

She hurried out of the front door, slamming it behind her and running down the street giggling to herself, high heels in her hand, feeling the cold gravel beneath her feet that didn't hurt her soles anymore - she'd done this far too many times.

"Will," Kaia said to herself as she walked the rest of the way back home, "Not the first one, probably won't be the last."

The sun had risen by the time Kaia walked through the door of her home. Her father and brother were sat at the table having breakfast together, a cup of tea was placed in front of the chair she usually sat at.

Nobody spoke as she sat down, throwing her belongings down onto the sofa and pulling up a chair in between the two men.

Bonnie gave her a sly glance from the side as he ate his toast, dropping crumbs all over the floor that she knew she'd have to clean up later since she was the only one in the house that bothered to keep it tidy.

"So," Aberama cleared his throat and leant back in his chair, looking at his daughter with a sarcastic smile, his hands clasped together behind his head, "Where have you been?"

Kaia held up her index finger to him, rushing over to her clutch bag and pulling out the gold watch. She walked back over to the table and handed the watch to her father.

"Happy Birthday, dad."

Aberama scoffed, shaking his head as he held the watch up in front of his face, inspecting it from every angle.

"Where did you get that from?" Bonnie mumbled, pulling an unimpressed face.

"Why does it matter?"

"You don't have any money."

"Yes I do."

"No," Bonnie said, "You don't. Not unless people have started paying you to be a whore instead of doing it for free."

"Bonnie!" Aberama slammed his fist down on the table, the watch now on his wrist, "Don't speak about your sister like that."

Bonnie rolled his eyes and pushed his chair under the table. He walked over to the door and pulled his coat from the hook, putting it over his shoulders. He glanced in the mirror as he put on his cap, lifting up his chin and running his finger over the edge of the blade he saw in the reflection.

It was Kaia's turn to roll her eyes then. Aberama saw, agreeing with her daughter's reaction. They both knew Bonnie hadn't been the same since he'd quit fighting and joined the Peaky Blinders, but neither of them could get through to him about trying to change his mind.

He disappeared for a moment, leaving Kaia and her father sat in silence at the table together. He drank his tea, she drank hers, Aberama occasionally glancing down at the birthday present on his wrist, not being able to help but wonder where his daughter actually got it from.

He decided he probably didn't want to know.

Bonnie walked back into the kitchen, sniffing and wiping his nose with the back of his hand. He looked out of the kitchen window with his hands resting on the counter, letting out a sigh and shaking his head quickly.

"Oh Jesus Christ." Aberama mumbled to himself, sighing loudly.

Kaia wasn't used to seeing her brother like that. He never caused trouble, never smoked, drank or did drugs. Now, he was clearing his nose clean of cocaine at the breakfast table. The Peaky Blinders had really got a hold on the boy.

"John said he saw you last night, left The Garrison with Will Fletcher."

"Who the hell is Will Fletcher?" Aberama raised an eyebrow, not having any idea what his son was talking about.

"Nobody dad, he-"

"He's some rich bastard John went to school with, he works in the city now for some law firm. That's what John said, anyway. Can't be doing that well for himself if he's having to settle for fucking K-"

"Bonnie!" Their father shouted for the second time that morning, narrowing his eyes at him with his jaw clenched.

Aberama had raised his children alone for most of their lives. His wife had passed away when Bonnie was five and Kaia was three, leaving them in a dark place while they mourned, Aberama wondering how on earth he was going to carry on.

Despite this, it seemed like they had a happy childhood. They both did well in school and had plenty of friends, not that he knew who any of them were.

As they grew older, the three of them drifted apart, especially Kaia. Aberama and Bonnie had a bond, they had boxing to do together, something to talk about and spend their time doing. With Kaia and her father, there was nothing. They would talk over dinner, ask about one another's day, and that would be it. Some days, Aberama did feel guilty about neglecting his relationship with his daughter, but looking at the path Bonnie was now heading down, perhaps a bond with his child wasn't always a good influence.

"I've gotta go," Bonnie said, finishing the last of his tea and placing his cup and plate down on the kitchen side, "I'll see you later. Garrison at six for a birthday pint, ey dad?"

Aberama pointed at his son with a nod and a smile as he walked out of the door, closing it shut behind him. He wondered if Bonnie would've even remembered it was his birthday if Kaia hadn't given him the watch.

"Any plans today, Kaia?" He turned to his daughter, smiling at her.

She smiled back, happy that he'd bothered to ask. Admittedly, since Bonnie joined the Peaky Blinders, Aberama had been at home a lot more with Kaia, since there was no need for him to be in the gym all the time with Bonnie. Their relationship had blossomed, but it was still nowhere as close as Kaia would've liked it to be.

She shrugged her shoulders, "I might go into town, see if there's anymore places hiring."

"You know me and Bonnie can easily just-"

"Dad," she tilted her head, raising an eyebrow knowingly, "I want to do this by myself. I know you and Bonnie could get me a job anywhere, I don't want to rely on you, or any man."

Aberama pursed his lips and drew in a sharp breath, nodding slowly. He admired his daughter's willingness to provide for herself and he was glad she was independent. He would've feared for her a lot more if she wasn't, but the day he saw her twist a boy's arm around his back, a horrific scream coming from his mouth, after he touched her without her consent, he knew his little girl was going to be able to look out for herself.

"You don't have to worry about me."

She smiled at her father, placing her hand on top of his comfortingly. He smiled back, a warm feeling beginning to glow inside of him at the action. Kaia had always been a rather hostile child growing up and he knew it was because he hadn't been as affectionate towards her as he should've been after her mother passed away. Aberama had never been good with showing how he felt.

"I know I don't," he licked his lips and nodded, "Just don't go getting involved in the same business as your brother. It isn't safe, not even for a woman like you."

Kaia chuckled, "I promise you'll never have the words Kaia and Peaky Blinder in the same sentence, Dad."

first chapter!! I'd just like to point out that again I'm not following any specific season from the show or any kind of plot, I'm just making this storyline up completely. Also, I know in the show it mentions Aberama having other children apart from Bonnie, but for the sake of this book, it's only Bonnie and Kaia:)
I'd love to know your thoughts on this first chapter, this will pick up soon!
thank u!!
