Chapter 24: Unrecognisable Voices
Chapter 24: Unrecognisable Voices
"Sit your ass down, you don't know what you're talking about." Marco waved off the Man and tried once again to silence the room, but no one was hearing a word of it.
"I say we just get rid of the whole lot of them!" another man began, his high pitched tone screeched through the rest of the loud voices that strained my ears. "We were better off when the Werewolves were in charge!"
This sparked outrage. Everyone was screaming at one another and a small group of men and women, paled skin and relatively human in appearance – vampires – stood at attention and were looking about ready to pounce on the poorly groomed werewolves where the man on the chair stood glaring at the others in the room as if they were beneath him. I jumped up on my chair to get a better look at the scene about to occur only metres away from where I stood.
"You mean when Werewolves rounded up everyone who was deemed of 'bad blood' and slaughtered us like rats in the streets?!" A pale haired man questioned with pure disgust lacing his words.
"Yes, Rats was the perfect choice of words." The Werewolf smiled wickedly igniting their rage further. The group of vampires pounced on the werewolves, claws and teeth baring as each one became the monsters that haunted my fairy tales. The werewolves jumped into action, most turning into dark black and brown beasts. Wolves were not exactly how I would describe them, no, they weren't the fluffy wolves that you often wanted as a pet, they were big – almost as tall as a human on two legs – with mattered fur, shoulders hunched and their head somewhat up right with a long snout. The best descriptor I could think of was a rabid mangy dog cross gorilla.
The view was frightening.
I filched back, my foot slipping on my chair but Logan's hand quickly shot up to grab hold of me, steadying me where I stood. "We have to go Britney." He rushed his urgency as he looked around in a frantic panic.
My eyes focused back on the scene in front of me as I found it hard to look away, my gaze captivated as the Vampires got their first taste of the werewolves deep red blood. Their brows frowned deeply as their top lips curled up and their canine teeth grew two inches and a deep hiss left their lips.
"Britney now!" Logan yelled at me as he tried to move me. The entire chamber was chaos. Marco stood at the front being argued with by everyone, shouting at him and even a few drawing their swords and telling him to run away and never return.
"Stop!" The loud firm voice echoed through the room, putting a stop to everyone's movements. I looked down at Logan who was frozen at my side, in mid reach for me. His expression was shocked as he eyed me with worried eyes. Blinking slightly I looked around the room to find everyone's eyes on me and that's when I realised, I was the one who spoke.
The words had left my lips without even passing through a filter and I couldn't get them back no matter how natural I pretended to be – or how quickly I ran out of the room with my head tucked in between my shoulders.
"Well if it isn't the human bitch that has killed our kin." One man – the werewolf who was in full favour of removing my head from my shoulders – spat as he looked at me in pure disgust, never have I seen a look so hateful directed at someone else much less at me.
"I didn't kill anyone." I defended myself, again my voice was clear – calm, even – almost as if they weren't my words, almost as if they were rolling off my tongue before I could process them.
"You might as well have."
"But I didn't." I spoke clearly to him, my eyes narrowing as I focused on the man before I took a deep breath and found some courage. If I couldn't help them fight, then the least I could do was help calm everyone down – or better yet, get them to unite against a common enemy that hopefully wasn't me. "I didn't hold a knife to anyone's throat, I didn't slaughter innocence. I was taken from my home, my family, just like most of you who survived the siege. I was nothing more than a prisoner so I will not be sorry for being rescued!"
I paused to calm down my rage slightly at the accusation of being a murder.
"You are all grieving and I understand, believe me I do, but look at yourselves, bickering and fighting each other just like they want you too. This is their plan and you are all playing right into their hands like fools. You will all be too busy killing each other that by the time the Volucris attack there will be no one left to fight them but the children and the wounded. So stop this nonsense because I for one would like to live to see my next birthday!"
By the end of my little speech, my cheeks were red, my voice was strained from the yelling and my hands were twitching with all the built up emotions that were bubbling inside of me. Logan grabbed my hand, interlacing his fingers with mine and running his thumb over my knuckles, calming me down, with each movement. I took a deep breath and looked down at him, his eyes piercing into mine before he gently pulled me down off the chair and into his arms.
I let his arms surround me in a tight embrace as his body warmed me in a protective hug. His eyes stayed glued on the men and women who still had their attention on me, his eyes watching their movements with deadly precision.
"You can send us on our way. We will leave if that is your decision." Marco started again, his loud and powerful voice boomed across the camber, his tone demanding attention – and he got it. "But. I will put this to you. If we leave and they come to kill you – which they will – do you know the best way to fight them? If you send Britney back to them, they will still come after you, after all, her blood will be all they need to over you all. Let us help you."
The camber feel into an eerie silence, everyone looked from one to another and back again. No one spoke.
"Come on, we have to go." Logan's soft voice whispered in my ears as he pulled me out of his arms and over towards the door. I stayed silent until we were on the other side of the large doors, separated from the large crowd. "Are you okay?" he questioned as he cupped my face in his hands and regarded me with total concerned.
"I'm fine, a little shaken but okay." I gave him a small smile as I rubbed his arm, trying to assure him of the sincerity of my words. "What are we doing now?"
"Waiting. We are just waiting for everyone to calm down and then they will make a decision."
"And if they want us gone?" I looked up with worried eyes.
"I don't know."

It was a long while, sitting there in the lobby, twiddling our thumbs and waiting for some information – any kind of information. Marco had been sent out of the room while everyone discussed whether to get rid of us, or let us fight alongside them. It has been over an hour and we haven't heard a peep.
What were they saying in there?
Should I be running for the hills? Finding a place to bunker down in for the time being?
I was frightened, my knee was bouncing up and down and my hands were twitching while my heart was racing in my chest at a fierce rate. If they made the decision to send me back, I lose everything, my sense of self, everything that made me, me. My mind and memories in general, I would just be a puppet, a lifeless wooden doll – oh my god I was becoming Pinocchio.
The door slowly creaked open and we all stood at attention, me standing just behind the two tall men in front of me making it a little harder to see the figure that had slipped through the crack of the door. "The Camber is being disbanded, you may want to back away." The voice informed us. Marco and Logan nodded their heads and stepped back until they were both sitting on their side of where I was standing on the marble stone bench. Logan grabbed my hand in his, resting it over his shoulder before he grabbed my legs with my other hand and pulled my legs out from under me making me fall into his lap with skilful precision.
The room slowly began to empty, each of the individuals who were only moments ago deciding my fate began to walk out in groups, each on being sure to look our way as all three of us stared at them – although I was almost certain that Marco was glaring at them.
As soon as the last few groups left the small lobby type room we had been stored away, we made our way into the room – the boys traveling at a much faster pace than I was. Although the Camber was relatively there were still a few representatives seated along the long table on the small stage that Marco was seated at during the beginning of the Session.
"So," Marco began as he extended out his arms to his sides and approached those seated "What's the verdict? Do I start packing?"
I waited for an answer eagerly as I reached out for Logan's hand, lacing my fingers in his and giving it a tight squeeze.
He turned his head to look at me both flashing me a reassuring smile. He leaned in and used his free hand to push the loose strands of hair out of my eyes and behind my ear. "No matter what happens," he whispered softly in my ear "I'll keep you safe."
