Chapter 45: The Enemy of His Enemy is His Friend
Orion was subject to the whirlwind that followed the grey-haired male's arrival. Haru, despite never having met the older male in his life, seemed very adverse to his presence. At first, after his father had hit him, he just stood there, in shock. He observed, regressing a bit, as "Enmei" began to introduce himself. Quiet as a mouse, he only glared but didn't say a single word, even as he stepped into the house and was hugged by his mother. Instead, knowing he would be hit again if he interrupted, he clung to the younger girl, needing to hold onto something of his.
Oddly enough, though no one else seemed to recognize the male, the brunette's mother was very emotional at his presence. She would hug him and pat him on the head, hold his hand, etc. just to be as close to him as possible. Following her lead, Kazuya also tried to be welcoming though he could not quite touch him, putting a certain distance both away and near him; an equal balance. That also made Haru irritated. He never liked change. The male wanted everything the same every day.
"I didn't think," A pause from the grey-haired individual. "I didn't think I would be welcomed."
"Of course you would be," Eloise sobbed, holding onto him tightly as if he would slip away, "I thought you would never come here. I'm so glad - "
Orion flinched as the woman became weak, her overexcitement bestowing on her a coughing fit. Her knees buckled and her husband supported her quickly, the woman hunching over while he pressed a hand to her forehead. It was like looking into a mirror. She was probably dying, just like him, on a fraying strand of thread. He wondered who would live longer. Though the woman was suffering, it was still a fact that his symptoms had been worse than hers. Maybe that was why Haru changed his mind so quickly about him.
The brunette, as a result of seeing his mother in pain, accredited it to the foreigner. If the older girl had not been holding him firmly in place, he would have tried to maul him. He disliked him bringing such cruel emotions to his mother. Orion made a note not to harm her. The prince didn't really feel like getting killed by the brunette. Though, truth be told, he didn't really know what would set him off. That was probably the same situation that Enmei was in, the grey-haired male glancing over to him with great fear.
"What's he even doing here?! This isn't his house! He wasn't invited! I wasn't told anything about - "
"We didn't know he was coming," Kazuya interrupted, holding his wife closely, "but we should be happy he's here."
"Why?! We're not his family! We're not his friends! I don't even know him! Why is he in my house on my property messing up my morning?! You promised!"
The promise, though Orion wasn't aware of it, was one that the brunette's father had made. The man, out of concern for the boy's hypersensitivity with strangers, always promised that, no matter what, the brunette would be made aware beforehand if anyone was coming over. If it were a business partner, he would call the male and tell him as soon as possible so he could hide the younger girl and Bastien away. He didn't hate the grey-haired male. Not yet. He was just scared, his fear warping into overly aggressive words and actions, especially since his fragile mother was out in the open.
"I did break my promise," the male's father sighed, darting his eyes from Enmei to Haru, "I just forgot he was a stranger to you. I'm sorry. You need to calm down before I tell you this. You're not going to take it well, I know, but it's important that you listen."
"If I won't like it, don't tell me! Kick him out and - "
"Haru," the boy's mother mumbled somberly, hugging the foreign individual tightly.
At her tone, the brunette paused, wondering why she was so fixated on the boy. It wasn't like he was an old family friend. If that were true, Kazuya would have greeted him differently. But, for some reason, instead of standing on his side, his mother was on the side of a complete stranger. He had already forgotten that the people that were strangers to him could be known by others. In this case, he was out of the know, and he didn't like that. His father knew nothing was going to get him to calm down, not even with the younger girl trying to keep him in place. He figured it was best to rip the bandage off quickly.
"He's your brother."
To his surprise, the brunette did not lash out immediately. In fact, he almost lagged in place. He didn't recognize it as a sentence that was even possible. He had one brother. That was it. He didn't have a sister and he didn't have any older siblings. That was just the reality of his life. So, why would he have understood that language? For a moment, he considered the fact that his father was pulling his leg; that it was a joke. After all, he'd never been great at recognizing or finding humor in jokes. However, the look on his face was serious. At least, he thought it was. It was really hard to tell sometimes.
"He's your brother," his mother repeated more slowly, letting it sink into his brain, "Your...half brother?"
All of a sudden, Orion watched as blood came into sight. Enmei began writhing around in agony on the ground, gripping at his shoulder while the brunette's mother fell to her knees to help him. Tons of people began rushing around, trying to apply pressure on the wound, but the chaos was unimaginable. To contrast that, Haru, himself, was just standing still. He looked a bit discontent at the fact that he had missed his aim but, otherwise, he had a very neutral look on his face. Then he walked away.
Kazuya began shouting at him, threatening punishment, but the brunette did not care. On the contrary, he tuned him out, focusing instead on going to play with Bastien - his only brother. He grabbed onto the younger girl's wrist, too, taking her along. And though Orion wanted to follow after her, he decided to go down and try to help. Though he mostly got in the way, he tried to help bring water and other necessities. Thankfully, the grey-haired male was not hit in an artery. Though he bled a lot, enough to make the orange-haired male queasy, when they put him on one of the couches, he did much better.
Eloise had to be taken away, if only because the stress inside of her after seeing her child attacked made her symptoms act up. Because Kazuya took her, trying to comfort her and holding her like a princess, that left Enmei alone with Orion and the servants. The prince, as he helped the male drink, thought he should try and fill in their role. Talking softly, he tried to make him feel more at ease.
"You did a good job," he praised, petting his head, "Stitches are hard, huh? But you were really brave. Here. This will get your energy back."
The prince passed the boy a cookie, breaking it into smaller pieces. And though the grey-haired male was skeptical, he nonetheless accepted, if only to regain his strength. After a while, he had finished the treat, grateful for the kindness. Orion's smile also did much to lighten his mood, the male smiling subconsciously as the prince began to ramble compliments to him. Enmei had never met someone so pure like that. His smile fell immediately as he flinched at the front door slamming open.
"It's real fucking quiet in here!" a loud-mouthed ravenette yelled, an aggressive stature and expression prompting the prince to tremble a bit, "I wasn't trying to interfere or nothin', but - "
"Oh, shut the fuck up! If it was quiet, you barging in here wouldn't do anything to - "
"I'm not gonna sit there and wait while - "
The ravenette trailed off as he noticed the grey-haired male sitting on the couch with a reddened towel over his shoulder. The orange-haired girl next to him also became a bit silent, freezing in place before she sprinted over to Enmei, her companion following suit, angry he had been left behind. They began to dote over the grey-haired male, albeit with very strong and aggressive language, no doubt their own way of showing love. Enmei tensed up at their constant questioning, leading Orion to stand between them, giving a shy look.
"I'm sorry, but...Well, I think you're making him scared. I-I understand you guys are (probably?) friends, but he's in shock, so - "
"Why?!" the ravenette growled, clutching onto the prince's shoulders, "What coulda possibly happened to make him bleed like this?! Do you have any idea how - "
"I'll be fine," Enmei interrupted, looking down sadly, "We knew this could happen. I'm just happy my...my..."
"Mother."
"Yeah, that. She seemed to miss me. It was...nice."
"That means shit if she didn't protect you from whatever the hell this is!"
Orion frowned, not knowing what to do. He wanted to be of help, but he couldn't deescalate the situation nor could he hug the grey-haired male. If he did, it would have hurt him. So, instead, he tried to give him more snacks to regain his energy, not going unnoticed by the two abrupt guests. He even gave them some space to talk. Occasionally, he would hear yelling by the ravenette, but, most of the time, it was them trying to comfort him in some way. It was sweet.
Sometime later, Kazuya had returned, very visibly with a heavy heart. He was then subject to the shouting and beratings given by the guests. In return, though he took it all silently, when they demanded he speak, he could only mutter that he was sorry and that he should have known better. The answer, as expected, did nothing to alleviate their anger. Thus, the man promised that Enmei would get his own place close to him and that he would be put in their official family register. Still, they were not satisfied, and demanded the ability to take him to the hospital. That being said, when they realized the man had called a doctor from the hospital already, they settled down, unable to criticize anything else.
Soon after, because there was an emergency back where they came from, they had to leave. Before they did, they gave the grey-haired male their numbers and warned Kazuya that, if anything else happened to him, he would find himself in a world of pain. He took their words to heart, wanting nothing else to happen to the child. With them gone, the house was a whole lot quieter.
Nonetheless, Orion wanted to talk with Enmei. He happened to like him. Though the doctor had to treat him and make sure he would be okay, afterwards, the boy was able to talk to him. Mostly, it was him talking, but he listened nonetheless. Especially when the younger of the two began rambling about things he was interested in, the grey-haired found himself smiling and catching the contagious joy. And though, sooner or later, he eventually left, unable to stay in the same place as Haru for too long, lest the brunette assault him again, Orion still felt very positive about their meeting. His joy lingered even as he got a surprise call, one of the servants passing him the phone.
"I've been having tons of fun!" the boy enthusiastically chuckled, tucking in his knees to his chest with a love-struck look, "I made a new friend today. And I got to sleep in a bed right across from everyone, so I wasn't too lonely. The veggies here aren't as good as they are back home, but they're yummy anyway."
"I'm glad. But how was the date?" a teasing voice asked.
"Y-You can't ask about that!"
"No? Even though you were talking about it all - "
"Uncle!"
The dirty-blonde-haired man chuckled on the other end of the phone. Orion had been bragging about the ordeal, even seeking his advice on what to do. And though he tried his best to give advice, there really was no such thing. He had to experience it himself. All Satoru did was give him the clichés he had read to give him a sense of the thing. Nonetheless, he was beyond proud of Orion for doing something that big on his own for the first time in his life. He was so proud, in fact, he was embarrassed of himself, covering his smile even though no one was in the room with him.
"Mm. How was it?"
"It was...beyond anything I've ever...Ugh," the prince blushed, hiding himself in much the same manner before stopping himself.
"And the kiss you wanted so - "
"No! No, no, no! I didn't...For me to want something like that...it's indecent!"
"Orion," A pause. "I have three children. If wanting a kiss is indecent, I must be the slut your aunt says I am."
"Don't say that!"
"I'm just saying that you're fine. I'll take it that the kiss did not happen?"
"No, but...Well, it was still wonderful. We went on rides first, but, as it turns out, I really don't like them. But you wouldn't believe how kind she was! She made sure I was alright and stayed with me the whole time and she even held my hand! Then she won me stuffed animals! I'm going to take them back to the castle!"
"How sweet."
"And we went on the ferris wheel just like you said. W-We didn't...kiss...but she opened up to me. Before, she found it so hard to smile, but after, I think she became herself around me. That's better than a kiss, I think."
"I would have to agree with you. That sounds like a successful date, huh?"
Orion didn't verbally agree, too focused on hiding himself in some weird kind of shame. Nonetheless, Satoru could hear his satisfaction. Chuckling, he thought of all the books he had read with the prince. Mostly, it was history, but he had begun getting interested in romance, something Satoru had a passion (?) for. Really, he only read them to highlight the sweet things the female lead would do that his ex-wife would never do even at gunpoint. But it was good to see that someone was getting something out of the romance books.
"Well, it wasn't like the books. You told me I was supposed to do all that stuff for her. So, I don't know if - "
"Did you enjoy the date, Orion?"
"Well, of course, but - "
"Did she enjoy the date, Orion?"
"Well, she was smiling a lot and she said she wanted to do other things with me, too, but - "
"Then it was a good date. That's all there is to it."
"Really? Then...I'm happy."
Satoru smiled a little wider. Good. Independence was a necessary thing for anyone coming of age, and, for the prince, especially, he needed an extra dose of it. The man didn't expect him to take an interest in ruling nor did he anticipate him becoming the greatest leader of all time. In reality, there were people to take care of everything for him. All he had to do was be a figurehead, if he so wished. Truth be told, Satoru wished he would take that path. It seemed tragic for him to gain his health back only to spend the rest of his days slaving away by running a country.
"You'll be back in two days, hm? Have any plans for tomorrow?"
"She asked me to go somewhere special with her! It's a surprise, but I really hope it's somewhere we can be alone. Although...Mister Haru is not doing great, so it's possible we might not go at all."
"I thought you liked Haru."
"I do! I think he's incredible and I idolize him a ton! But...Well, I think Miss Shiratori cares about him a lot. So, if he needs her, she'll probably cancel our plans. It's a bit unfair, I think."
"I'm afraid that's how it can be, at times. You seem to have become interested in a very busy young woman."
"You always have advice, uncle. Is there anything you can tell me to help?"
"I'm not sure, but, if there's no room in her schedule, see if you can worm yourself in. Offer to help her somehow, if you need to, but, if not, it might be a good idea to catch her at meals. I will say though; if she's uncomfortable, don't keep doing it. Then you're just a prick. Avoid being a prick. Yes?"
"Yes! Oh...what's a prick?"
"Just," the man paused, chuckling at the boy's eager but mindless response, "And I normally wouldn't give this advice to anyone, but if my books are to be believed, just be yourself. You're a cute kid. You should be fine."
"Really? Then, I'll do my best! Thank you, uncle!"
Orion hung up, probably to go and speak to the girl in question, leaving Satoru with a few thoughts. The first was that he would probably fail. Truth be told, he had seen the relationship between Haru and (Y/n), and though it was odd and conditional, there was still a lot of trust she had in him and vice versa. She probably had more factors than met the eye. The second thought was that he needed to visit Cadmus, if only to see his take on the situation; the situation being the boy's first love. And the third was that, despite the length of their conversation, the boy hadn't even coughed once.
