Chapter 22: Overwhelmed

By the time (Y/n) had gotten back to the embassy, she found furniture outside. Though she took a moment to cross her arms over her chest, "admiring" the scene, she was quickly pushed forward by Kazuya. Concerned, he pointed out that time was of the essence, which had her continue into the house. She noted beforehand that the ambassador and his child had escaped outside, probably terrified at the temper of the president's son. Though Haru was always extremely petulant, that fact must have been thoroughly covered up by his family.

It was no surprise that the interior of the embassy was completely trashed. Though she was no detective, unable to say what he destroyed in what order, he seemed to leave his own wake of catastrophe. She maneuvered around the destroyed decorations, particularly the wooden chairs that had splintered all across the floor. While Sona attempted to clear a path for her, there was more than he could handle on his own.

"I recommend being cautious," the teal-haired male sighed, unable to predict the actions the brunette would take, "I don't know that he has a lot of self control right now."

He didn't have to tell her for her to know. Haru always struggled reining in his own impulses, let alone when he was mad. As a result, she had been trying to teach him how to control himself, but, in the end, all it could take was one stab of a knife. Either way, the more she left him on his own in that state, the more mad he would get, and the more mad he would get, the easier it was for his self control to slip.

She pressed on, following the broken things and the yelling to find the brunette upstairs. He had taken out a new toy, it seemed, beginning to shoot things. Though the weapon made her pause, he had already spotted her, meaning she couldn't leave now. The brunette's face distorted into more anger, the male quick to pull the trigger on the gun on the pillow under his feet. She flinched as its sound reverberated through the room, the eye contact he made chilling her to the bone.

For quite some time, he proceeded to ignore her, continuing to shoot this or that in a childish pout. Still, when pouting with a gun, no matter how childish it was, it didn't make it any less terrifying. At any moment, he could have chosen to shoot the next bullet at her. And while she was confident Sona would do anything he could to protect her, it meant nothing if Haru had the power to shut him down.

"Haru," she called, met with a hateful, silent glare, "Can you put the gun down?"

As if to make a point, stubbornly, he shot the wall five times, pausing before doing it twice more. She shivered, taking a step back in fear. The brunette was not in the mood to listen to her. He just wanted to throw a fit. Even Bastien knew better. Then again, Haru was a lot bigger than his little brother. He could do more damage and was certainly more of a threat. That was probably why her legs started shaking.

Sensing her fear, Sona attempted to step in front of her, in a comforting gesture. However, the brunette's face quickly contorted into jealousy and quickly fired a bullet at him. Though, since he had forgotten he had given the android a strong exterior, the bullet did nothing to him, just crumpling on impact. And though Haru had only shot the gun because he disliked others getting so close to the (h/c) haired girl, it still posed a threat to her so Sona did not back off.

"Haru."

"You still remember my name even after hanging out with that bastard all day?!" he yelled at the top of his lungs, putting a countless amount of bullets into the same pillow on the ground (clearly pretending it was the Vethelan prince).

"Of course I do. I would never forget about you."

Irritated at what he deemed to be a lie, the brunette took out his anger on the pillow some more. After pumping more bullets into the thing, he kneeled down and began ripping its seams apart. His anger was prevalent, and it only seemed to get worse as he continued abusing the object. He was so frustrated at the fact that it was just a pillow, wanting nothing more than the prince to be subject to his punches.

"I hate it when you leave! I hate it when you're with other people! I hate it when you...when you...I-I just hate it!"

The brunette threw the gun with all of his strength to the other side of the room, continuing to rip the pillow to shreds. This now left Haru without a weapon. Or, rather, it left him without a visible weapon. Though it took her a bit to gather her confidence, she finally started moving towards him, Sona by her side. If worse came to worst, he would have to side with her, doing anything in his power to get her to safety, even at the cost of his own body. That was how he was programmed.

While Haru was still seething in anger, (Y/n) knelt down by his side, biting her lip. She knew she shouldn't have been with Orion for that long; that she should have ignored the Lindre flower. Though, realistically, she should have known she could never resist that flower nor the meaning behind it. Quick to place her arms around him, she was shocked to be brushed off by the brunette. He loved hugs. They usually triggered an off switch in him, but, since it wasn't working, it meant he was really, really upset - probably more than she knew. It was a level of anger she hadn't ever seen in him if it couldn't be solved with physical affection.

Haru moved away from her, sneering at her attempt to satiate his frustration. He wasn't an idiot, brushing off all the blame onto the orange-haired male. In the first place, the royal had been the one to entice her into remaining by his side, but he knew it was (Y/n) that ultimately decided to follow along with it. Both of them were to blame, but there was a kind of betrayal he felt with her share in it.

"I'm sorry," she sighed, hugging herself in shame, "I should have controlled myself."

"Why didn't you?! You're always telling me that I have to control myself! Why can't you do the same?!"

"Because I'm not perfect, Haru!"

The brunette's eyes flickered with confusion. He didn't understand what she meant. After all, he was right. She had always been trying to make him act "reasonably", telling him what was right and what was not. There were so many stupid rules that she had him abide by in public and at home, telling him he wasn't allowed to punch someone if he really wanted to, or that he couldn't kiss her even if he really, really wanted to. It was all so annoying, but he did it because it meant she would only ever be with him. That was what she promised.

"No one can ever control their emotions one-hundred percent of the time. I don't expect that of you and you shouldn't expect that of me."

"But - "

"You're right. I was wrong. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I left you on your own and made you worry. It was wrong of me."

The (h/c) haired girl moved forward to place her hand on his cheek. She wanted to let him know she was sincere about it. Still, he slapped her away, putting himself in a defensive stance. She hadn't expected that either, but respected his wishes, taking a few steps back. If he needed space, that was fine. Rather, she just wanted him to listen and understand why she did what she did. That was probably the hardest part - understanding.

"You know I don't like him!" he growled, pulling out stuffing from the pillow, "If you knew, why didn't you think of me? That's what you always tell me! You always say that you should think of how it will hurt other people before you do something!"

"I'm glad you remember."

"Why didn't you think of me?! I-I'm always thinking of you! Why don't you love me?!"

"Don't say it like that. I do love you, Haru. It would not be easy to change that."

"But if you love me, why would you want to be with that stupid prince?! Do you think he's more handsome than me? O-Or richer? Or is it because he's nicer?!"

"The only reason I stayed with him that long is because I wanted to see a flower. And before you whine about how you could get me any flower, it was a Lindre flower. It's the only one left in the world."

The brunette calmed down a bit. He still seemed to be under the impression she very much adored the orange-haired male, but, at the very least, he knew she didn't lie to him. The male began to get choked up on his own tears, pouting. Though she would never tell him why, he knew the flower was precious to her, if only because of their prior conversation at the garden. She was always looking at pictures of them whenever she was sad. Sona had commented on it more than a handful of times. As a result, Haru felt guilty blaming her for it.

"I love you. I would not cheat on you behind your back, even if you are being a brat."

"I'm not a brat."

"You are, but it's okay. Are you still mad?"

"Yes. I don't see what's so great about him."

There was a lot of irony in that sentence. Of course, in Vethela, Orion was a big presence, but she supposed he meant more of his character. In truth, she wasn't so sure that the orange-haired male had any talents. Compared to Haru, who was a leading figure in the tech industry, the prince just wasn't able to match up. At least, that was how she assumed he felt though his sense of self was a little inflated.

"I think you should meet him - "

"No."

"I guess I tried. Instead, should we talk about something else?"

"Me."

"What about you?" she chuckled, knowing exactly what he wanted, "You want me to talk about how smart you are? Or how handsome you are?"

The brunette was conflicted now. He was still angry; he knew that much. After all, his chest was still stuffed with a conflicting emotion and he was still pulling stuffing out of the pillow. However, at the same time, he was very happy. The (h/c) haired girl was complimenting him and showing love in her own way. He liked receiving the compliments, but he was still mad. The male ended up sticking his cheeks out like a chipmunk, pouting, and whether because he was holding his breath or he was flattered, he was blushing.

"Should we play games?" she suggested, wondering if he had broken his consoles, too, "Or maybe have a snack?"

"No."

"Well...okay. Then, do you want to cuddle?"

"...No."

"I don't think I've ever asked you this before, but, do you want me to leave you alone for a bit?"

After a few seconds passed of thoughtful deliberation, the brunette nodded eagerly. Though it was a first for both of them, (Y/n) wasn't going to make him angry again. Instead, following his wishes, she said a short goodbye and moved to leave. He must have been feeling overwhelmed. Stress never did sit well with him, always ramping things up more than it should have. Still, she was grateful he was learning to handle it on his own. Although it went saying that she would leap to help him should he need it, it was ultimately up to him. She guessed having alone time was a new experiment he wanted to try out.

Of course, Haru, not having expected himself to agree to the quiet time, felt quite bizarre. It was strange that he didn't want to be with the girl he loved. In fact, he would have thought, with the addition of stress in the new environment, he would have wanted to be by her side even more. Though, he must have realized he couldn't have let her leave just like that. Cracking the door open just a bit, he peeped out at her walking away, narrowing his eyes. Quick to sneak up to her and steal a kiss, he retreated back to the room, locking the door behind him.

"Was that...for me?" she questioned, receiving an uncertain shrug from Sona, "I think he was trying to make me feel better."

"Did it work?"

"Well, yes, actually."

The android smiled, knowing the brunette felt just as relieved with the display of affection. The two then moved through the rubble before meeting with Kazuya back outside. He was very relieved to see that they were alright and especially that Haru had calmed down. It was a feat to even be able to talk to him in that state, so, as always, he expressed his undying gratitude for the girl, all while trying to stop Bastien from eating grass.

They then had servants clear the area and order for everything to be replaced. Though the money wasn't the issue, it seemed Kazuya was still quite troubled. It was common knowledge that what stressed Haru out the most was the possibility of change in the people he held closest to him. He liked the people he loved to stay the same.

His mother and father had been the way they always had since he was very young, so he expected the same from Bastien. And though the toddler had been growing a lot as of late, usually, the brunette wouldn't notice. When he did, however, he was oftentimes very overwhelmed. As for (Y/n), she was always changing. Though her core motivations remained the same, she took different routes to get what she wanted based on the optimal strategy. That probably stressed Haru out a lot as well, since, oftentimes, he would spiral into thinking he was not a part of that route. And though it was usually solved with a few displays of affection from her, Kazuya was still concerned.

"He's...alone?" the man questioned, being given the rundown by the younger girl as he bounced his youngest child on his knee, "He said he wanted that? That's so unlike him."

"I'm sure he'll never do it again, but," she paused, smiling, "he's trying his best, so we should cheer him on. Maybe you should take him out to dinner tonight if he's feeling up to it. He loves family time. It would be a great reward, I think."

"A reward, huh? Yes, I think that would encourage him. You always have such great ideas when it comes to him. And your patience, too...You must be a natural."

"Hardly. I wanted to strangle him the first time I met him. I still want to strangle him."

Bastien looked shocked. Though she didn't expect him to know what the word meant, she probably should have known based on his advanced education. Either way, the poor thing stared at her with tears in his eyes. He probably thought she was being serious, planning on killing his big brother. To play along with him, she made a clawing motion and gave a "rawr", the toddler bursting into tears.

"And great with children, too," the man teased, rolling his eyes but comforting the boy anyway, "How do you do it? Well, either way, I think you should join us for dinner. If it's family time, you're one of us, too."

"That's flattering, but it's a little too early, I think."

"Should we have an engagement ceremony? We could do it during the banquet."

"You're quite eager to have me as a daughter-in-law, aren't you?"

"Can you blame me? I've always wanted a daughter. Besides, if you're married into the family, I'll have a free babysitter for Haru year round."

"I swear to you that I will be anything but free. I will do the utmost of my abilities to bankrupt your family."

"You may certainly try."

The girl chuckled, apparently influencing Bastien to do the same. His laugh was obviously forced, coming out very strongly, but it was cute that he was trying to mimic her. The toddler then looked up at his father with a long hum. Sneakily, he then tried to reach for the man's teacup, only for him to panic and take it out of his reach. Though the brunette pouted and yelled, he only chuckled nervously, telling him he couldn't have the drink.

"You aren't drinking this early, are you, Kazuya?" the girl snickered, making Bastien pause and change his focus to copying her laugh.

"The sun is setting. Besides, aren't I entitled to this much? You just witnessed what my son can do. This lovely drink takes the edge off."

"I suppose I could look the other way if I were given some of that magical drink, too?"

"Be my guest."

"Me too. Me too," Bastien chimed, reaching his hands up in a grabby manner, "I want to have."

The girl then called a nearby servant over, telling them to serve her and the younger boy beer of the root variety. Bastien didn't know what that meant, but it sounded fancy. He knew beer was a special drink that adults had sometimes, so when the servant gave it to him, he was over the moon. The boy changed his entire posture, too, trying to act like what he thought adults were. Granted, the (h/c) haired girl joined him, humoring him in making him feel like he was part of the conversation.

All the while, Kazuya could only smile. Despite her coldness, she genuinely cherished both of his sons. He knew Haru was a lot, but she was so giving when it came to him. She waited and listened and supported him even when he was being a handful. For that alone, he was grateful, let alone her talent in business or the way she would protect both boys with everything she had. He didn't know what he had done to deserve such a headstrong girl coming into his life, but, in many ways, he couldn't imagine life without her any longer.
