Chapter fourteen

Lavi's POV

**

I returned to the house with the hope that I'd find her there but found it the same way I had left it.

Totally empty!

The realization of Katherine been gone finally dawn on me as I leaned against the wall of our room.

Why didn't she come back when she couldn't find me out there.

Damn!

I sank down on the floor with my head in between my palms as tears began to stink my eyes and burn through my throat like hot coal.

What have I done?

Running away with her was one thing. Loosing her is another thing. I only took her away because I wanted to protect and keep she and the baby safe and I have done just that until today when she left to God knows where in search of me.

How do I explain to her father what has happened to her when I don't even have a clue myself.

Christ!

If she doesn't show up before midnight; then am done for!

Bad shit happen to people every day especially pregnant women around here. People kidnap and use them for bad things all the time and the thought alone is killing me from the inside out.

This isn't just about something bad happening to her. It's also about my own sanity as well. I'd go crazy without her. She is like the very air I breathe. How then can I dare to live without her.

Dear God...please don't let anything bad happen to her and the baby.

I heard foot steps outside the door, followed by a knock as I struggle back on my feet and rush back to open the door.

Katherine?

Maybe she is finally back!

Gosh, am never letting her out of my sight again.

I stared back in shock the moment I push open the door as I stood staring back at the figure standing before me.

Am I dreaming?

I mean, how is this possible?

Aunt Nene stood in the door way of our room with that strange look on her face.

How did she find me?

"How...how... d-did you find this place?" I fumbled with words as I continued to stare at her.

"I know am the last person you are expecting to see right now so its okay if you don't invite me inside" she replied calmly staring back at me.

Invite her inside? Why would I do that when Katherine is not even inside.

"I'm sorry but..."

"It's okay; I only came here to get you" she had interrupted with the wave of a hand.

"Come to get me?...are you here with the police?"

"Far from it dear...I can see that you are already scared and worried even but that's not why am here. I'm here because Katherine has sent me to come get you" Aunt Nene had spoken so calmly but my heart was squeezing on the inside with relief and worries at the same time with the mention of her name.

My face broke into a wide smile as her word finally dawn on me as  I continued to mold over what she just told me in my head.

Katherine is with her obviously...

Oh my God... I was right all along.

She is safe!

Thank you Jesus!

But on a second thought... Why would she send her?  Has something else happened that am not aware of ?

"Why did she send you? Where is she?" The smile on my face was gone at this point as I glared at her.

I'd hate to think that they have taken her away by force.

I seriously hope, that's not the case.

"She is at the health center and about to give birth!"

Health center?

About to give birth?

The word had echoed in my ears as the anger that had began to rise in my vein a while  had dissolved and evaporated like vapor through my mouth that is still hanging open due to how shock I was at the moment.

Katherine is already in labor and am not there?

Oh God!

"Take me to her please"

Katherine was no longer in her pajamas pant that I saw her putting on this morning when I left the house but was now clothed in a blue robe as she laid on the hospital bed.

I couldn't contain my joy as I stood staring at her. She looked so pained and exhausted at the same time as she keep tossing from side to side.

I sank down beside her on the bed as I took her hand in mine.

"Hey princess" I whispered to her.

Her head snapped at my direction as she leaned into my touch. She looked so relieved to see me as i held her close. She had her head buried deep into my chest. I could feel her pain too as I breathe her in. Her eyes are all red and puffy as she continued to bite back the pain she was going through.

"I'm so sorry princess" I whispered to her again before kissing her tears away.

Fear was evident in her eyes as she stared back at me. She gave a small nod as he continued to wince in pain with her hand squeezing mine so tightly that I could feel my hand going numb under her firm grip.

Aunt Nene walked over to the bed and sat down beside her on the opposite side of the bed.

"You're so brave my dear. Your dad is already on his way. Everything will be okay soon" she had assured her but I was no longer feeling so confident at this point. What if he comes here and tries to kick me out. I will never leave her even if he has a knife to my neck.

Katherine hand squeezing mine has pulled me back to reality as she continued to wince in pain.

"Breathe princess. You are doing so well darling" I had assured her with a smile but am not sure if she heard me or not as she gave a throaty groan.

"The contractions are getting stronger. I feel like I want to push right now" she told Aunt Nene and I before biting at her lower lip.

Aunt Nene rushed out to inform the nurse while I continued to hold on to her hands not knowing what else to say to make her feel better.

The nurse rushed back in and pulled her legs apart as she began to examine her with her eye brow merged in concentration.

"We can't wait for the doctor anymore. She is ready to push now so we have to move her to the labor right away. Let me go get the stretcher" she turned to leave before I stopped her.

"Can I carry her there?"

"Not today...I will go get the stretcher real quick"

"Okay"

I squat down beside her as I began to brush back some sticky curls leached on her face into the messy bun on her head.

The nurse returned with the stretcher while I scooped her into my arms and placed her back on it before she rolled her away toward the labor room.

"You have to wait outside" the nurse had turned to aunt Nene and I.

Katherine had answered before I could object.

"No! Don't go please. I want him in there with me" .  her hand found mine and I squeezed back enough to assure her that I won't leave her side not even for a second.

"Alright fine he can stay but she has to wait outside" turning to Aunt Nene.

"Okay! I will just wait here in case the doctor arrives"

"Okay"

I wish I can give Katherine my strength as I continued to walk beside her while she is been rolled in but that's so surreal.

She needs me and I will never leave her side.
