fresh baked
I wrote this to make me feel better because super fast did these guys become comfort characters
It was about 4 am, just when he began his work for the day, sitting quietly outside the squat building he's made his little sliver of sunshine. The smell of butter, cinnamon, and cream seemed to swarm around him like it would only on an early morning baker. The only thing that cut through it was the burning smell of the cigarette he held between his lips.
He looked out on the empty street. Blue eyes wandering around ceaselessly as he scratched at a flour dusted cheek. Blinking once before noticing a figure that definitely wasn't there before he closed his eyes.
He was tall, and thin, from what he could tell from behind. Looking up at the apartment building he seemed to have suddenly spawned infront of. The baker's eyes narrowed. Pulling the cigarette from his lips as a new scent hit his nose. Sweeter than any of the sugar he's been using. The kind that makes your tounge curl and saliva pool in your mouth. He had no need to stir him up. That didn't stop him though.
"Hey!" He didn't know what compelled him to call out so suddenly, but he sure did startle whoever stood across the way. He watched him spin around on his heel. Eyes wide and panicked as he looked over. Head tilted as they finally acknowledged each other's presence.
He tossed his cigarette to the ground to stomp on. Hitting the sign that was fixed just above his head, the light blinking to life as it did. In bright neon letters, "OPEN".
With a large hand he beckoned him over. It'd been a while since he's had any good company. It gets boring when you pass up every strange person you see. And now, it seemed like he might as well introduce himself to this particularly placed one. He felt the nagging feeling in the back of his head to keep to himself. But the last angel to roll through these tracks had to have been years ago.
It was refreshing to see they were still sending in fresh meat.
Besides, he needed to pull his cinnamon rolls out of the oven. He needed someone to help him taste.
Without taking a moment to see if he were following or not he strode inside. His little cafe area was snug and warm, the large glass displays, empty, waiting to be filled, wrapped across the big wall as he walked through the kitchen door he has stopped open. Hopefully he wasn't stupid enough to just freeze at the front door.
The smell of cinnamon filled the room as he took a deep breath, but that sickly sweet scent was still there, stronger actually as he apparently did follow him in. He pulled open the door to the small oven, this was only a personal batch. A different recipe he wanted to try.
"What is that?"
His voice was so close to his ear he quite literally jumped. He was close. Unbelievably close to him as he looked over him to the oven with incredibly wide eyes. The brightest blue he had to have seen in an awfully long time.
"Fuck, sit down over there, I could have dropped them-" He pushed his face back, turning him over to a stool as he obediently did as he was told. Hands curling together sheepishly as he realized what he did probably wasn't approved of.
With his oven mitts he pulled out the pan. Walking over and putting it down beside the other before he held up a finger. A simple sign to wait.
"Did you just get here?" He asked the blond. Watching his eyes as the flickered back to him. Watching his lips purse as they stayed silent.
When he didn't answer, he simply walked over to get the icing. Drizzling it over the pan before pulling two out to serve. A little extra on top never hurt anyone either, as he couldn't help but drop on another dollop.
He pushed the plate over. Genuinely not expecting to be met with a blade pressed to his cheek.
"I can't imagine why you'd invite me in."
They stilled. Both looking at each other in silent calculation before he raised his hand, making him flinch as he brushed his hand away.
"Well, you looked hungry. It's quite the long trip."
He pushed the plate over. Watching him look back at it, his eyes softer as he dropped his hand. Pink brightening his cheeks. He was definitely new at this.
"I'm Adelram. But here people just call me Ade." He sat beside him. Dipping his finger into the gooey mess of cinnamon infront of him before raising it to his lips. "I'm not here to fight, Angel."
"Then what are you here for, Demon?" He looked back at him warily. Watching the smile curl over his lips.
"I just want to bake."
He tilted his chin back to his food. This might be the first thing he ever tastes, in his opinion he was lucky he found him. It's easier to get customers to come back with a blinding first impression. He continued to stare at it, looking almost intimidated by the treat, it was almost laughable. He picked up his fork. Tearing a piece for him from it before opening his mouth, watching him mimic him just like a toddler before placing it on his tounge. Watching him light up before he turned back to his.
"It's called a cinnamon roll. You can have as many as you like tonight. But tommorow I'll have to charge you." He smiled. Watching him chew as he suddenly held his fork with a new eagerness.
"I'm Cassiel-" He mumbled through his full mouth. Swallowing before looking back at Ade with a different sort of sheepishness. "-I'm sorry I threatened you."
"Please. It happens all the time. I won't say a word if you don't." He brushed his nose, trying to ignore the overwhelming smell. "Nice to meet you, Cassiel. Is that really the name you're going to stick with?"
"It's the same as the one before..." He took another bite, sighing in bliss.
"Oh? So it's you're real name? I'm surprised you'd use it."
"Do you think I shouldn't... Adelram?" He quirked a brow. Alright, new, but definitely still a smartass.
"Point taken." He laughed, both men continuing to eat in silence.

"Ade, what is that?"
"Cass, for the love of all things you consider holy. Take your face off of the glass."
He watched him peel himself off of the display as he continued to hover unnecessarily close, obnoxiously so as the tip of his nose touched the display. Making the other man lean over to grab his blond hair to yank him up.
"Ow! Okay fine!" He tried to weasel out if his grip as he shook him. Only a month and Adelram was sure he's never regretted saying hi to anyone so much before. Dropping him back on his feet as he rubbed at his head with a pathetic pout. "For someone who's trying to get forgiven you're so mean to me...."
"My only rule is to not touch the glass. This has to be the 4th time I've had to remind you." He huffed from where he was perched over the counter. Watching him process everything he said in the empty blond head of his.
"Well what is it?" He persisted. Now poking the glass with his finger instead. For a moment Ade considered cutting it off.
"It's a frog bun." He smacked his hands over his face. "They're very popular right now, they're like the regular sweet buns, but shaped like a frog." He spoke like he was talking to a toddler, and in all honesty, that's pretty much what this was. "Do you want one?"
"I'll have four." Cassiel smiled brightly. "Oh, and can you put them in a little box?"
He peeked between his fingers, it wasn't unusual for him to order so many of anything he made. But this was the first time it looked like he was taking them somewhere instead of scoffing them down here with some tea.
"Actually planning to share for once?" He went and did as he ordered. Making sure to pull out a cookie to give him as he waited to pay. He was annoying sure, but something about how much praise he gave him as he snacked surely boosted his ego.
"Yes actually... I made a new friend." He smiled. "She's really sweet, and introducing me to people today."
"Aw, I thought I was going to be your only friend." He mock pouted as he put his sticker over the box, Baked in Heaven. Handing him the cookie as the blond beamed.
"I can make more friends than a defunct demon." He gave a happy sound as he bit into the treat.
"It's hard to believe a face that sweet can be such a bastard." Ade sighed. "Maybe that's how come you catch so many nasties."
He handed him the box. Cassiel paying as Ade went and handed him a slip of paper.
"In case you have the time after your playdate, there's something ugly in the westend." He said quietly. To say the least, he never minded helping get rid of trash he didn't like.
"Thank you, Ade." He gave a lopsided grin. "I'll get too it."
"Don't forget either, tommorow there'll be more of your favorite."
He watched him wave goodbye as he took his box and ran. The day's a lot more interesting now. To say the least.
