C H A P T E R 5 7

We drove north until my eyes were struggling to remain open. The highway shrunk to a single-lane winding road bordered by tall grass and old stone paddocks with hills melting into the dark skyline. The only source of light was coming from my car, the periodic small outdoor torchlight from a small cottage, and the even rarer sight, another car.

We finally call it a night when Muriel somehow spots a sign in the darkness for a bloody hostel. If I wasn't so tired I'd have continued on until we managed to find a proper place to stay, but because I very well could crash due to falling asleep at the wheel I begrudgingly agree to the hostel located near a small river.

"This isn't so bad." Murry says with a tired smile as I push open the old creaking door holding our bags in each hand.

I'm horrified.

And speechless.

The walls are paper-thin, we might as well be separated with a damn bedsheet from the others. And the tiny twin beds aren't much better.

I shut the door, noticing it doesn't have a lock on it, and growl loudly. The room consists of one tall dresser cornered near the single window with two small beds separated by a wobbly table with a burnt orange lamp.

Murry glances back, and smirks at my disgusted facial expression, then grabs the bags and places them atop the closest bed. "Well," I straighten my spoiled shoulders and go to the foot of the other bed, "At least if one breaks we will have a second."

"Oh my Gosh, stop being so dramatic, Oliver-." Murry begins as I fall onto my stomach onto the bed. The bed bangs loudly and from my weight, it collapses and I roll onto the floor.

Murry breaks out into a loud laugh and I can't help but join her while I lay on the floor staring at the crumbling ceiling.

Murry recovers eventually and we inspect the bed to find it has indeed snapped on one of the legs from my aggressive flopping.

"Looks like we're sharing," I say with a smile as I remove my shirt and pants, leaving myself in my briefs. I crawl into the second bed, carefully not wanting that one to break either, and try not to think about how many other bodies have been in these blankets.

Murry removes her clothes and instead of going to her suitcase she rummages through mine and grabs a plain white t-shirt.  "If you've seen some of the places I've stayed in for work, you'd be shocked. This is actually pretty nice." She says scanning the room whilst pulling the shirt down over her pretty tits.

I'm not even listening to what she's saying to be honest.

She crawls into the bed and cuddles into me laying on my chest and fitting her soft body between my legs. I settle in, forgetting about the state of this place, and let my heavy eyes shut.

"I'm sorry about Dad," She starts and I smirk, rubbing her arm to relax her about the topic. She's attempted to apologize for Henry several times on the drive, but I won't have it.

"Don't apologize, Muriel," I say.

"Why didn't you tell me he had said those awful things to you when you were twelve?" She asks lifting her gaze to mine while she keeps her head on my chest.

"I don't know. I thought for the longest time he was right. And maybe there's a wee bit of me that still thinks he might be."

"Don't say that. We're just very different people. And there's nothing wrong with being different."

"I know that," I say fixing her red hair behind her ear.

But what Henry's words said tonight outside of Mum and Dad's house still hang within me. We're the same, you and I.

I've been aware of Murry's and my differences for our entire lives. I know she's more intelligent, not self-centered, and more caring than myself. If that makes her better then that's fine. But I am not like her father. I will always put Muriel first, no matter if I disagree with her choices, unlike Henry.

"I love you," She says and I squeeze her tightly in reaction to hearing those three words I've been waiting for what seems my whole life.

"You're the first and only girl I've ever loved, Murry." Her arms wrap around my sides. She snuggles in closer under my chin with the sweet smell of her filling my nose as her hair tickles my face and neck.

"Ollie, if you knew what was happening when I called you at nineteen why didn't you say anything? Especially if you had feelings."

Shit...that bloody phone call was Hell.

Gemma told me the second she heard about Murry's plans and all I could do was nothing. By then Murry and I weren't talking. I was such a dickhead a couple of months before when they visited for Christmas. I was angry and bitter she'd gotten a boyfriend. Even that night, before Murry surprised me with a phone call, Gemma called to tell me to reach out to her.

I inhale, tasting her vanilla scent on my tongue then expel it slowly, "What was I supposed to say? I couldn't ask you to not sleep with your boyfriend."

"Yes, you could have-."

"No." I chuckle, this girl is so smart but there are things she just doesn't understand. "That was your choice to make, not mine."

"I called you because I wanted you to give me a reason, Ollie."

"A reason? It wouldn't have been right of me to ask you not to do that. You weren't mine to have any sort of claim over."

Muriel is quiet, but when I glance to see if she's asleep I notice her staring blankly, deep in her thoughts. I want to rush her through and pressure her to speak out loud so I can hear it, but decide against it.

"Then...Am I yours now?" She finally asks.

"As in my girlfriend?" I ask, clarifying quickly before I fucking piss myself with happiness.

"Yeah."

I didn't think this night could get any better. I thought her admission of love would be something I'd be riding high on for the next year, but now she wants to be together, officially -- finally.

I knew if the day ever came where Murry would be my girlfriend she'd be my last. She's the one for me. And I'm a lucky bastard who actually got the girl of his dreams.

"Yes, Murry. You're mine."

Her pink lips smile that pretty smile then she leans up kissing me sweetly.

Oh cuutteee
