Skye
"Skye!" Mrs. Palmerston, the owner's wife, knocks on the door to Skye's room.
"Come in, ma'am!" The little girl shouts.
Skye is six years old, but lucky for her, her parents died when she was too young to remember. She wasn't traumatized by the experience like most of the kids here were. She's the happiest of all of the kids here, always singing, dancing, or talking. Her only downside is that she's a bit shy.
Mrs. Palmerston walks in to the bright orange room and closes the door. "Hey, Skye," she says, sitting on the small bed.
"Good evening, ma'am."
"Have you taken your bath yet?
"No, ma'am. I was putting on a movie for my friends," Skye replies, gesturing to her stuffed animals.
Mrs. Palmerston bites her bottom lip. "Well, I need to talk to you."
Skye giggles. "You are talking to me, silly."
"No, I mean about something important," she says.
"What is it, ma'am?"
Mrs. Palmerston gestures for the six year old to sit beside her on the bed. "It's about adoption. You know what that is, don't you?"
Skye nods. "Lucas says it's when kids are taken away from here to go live somewhere else."
Mrs. Palmerston nods. "A family will adopt them and take them and love them, like how I love you."
Skye gasps. "You mean the family take care of the children?" Mrs. Palmerston laughs and nods. "Can I be adopted?"
The owner's wife grins. "That's actually what I wanted to talk to you about. Two young men emailed me and said they wanted to adopt someone, so I set up a meeting with you tomorrow." Skye's jaw drops. "So you have to be on your best behavior, or they might not adopt you," she says.
Skye nods. Mrs. Palmerston says goodbye and walks out.
"I'm gonna get adopted," Skye whispers.
She falls asleep smiling.
