Chapter 4

After making sure all evidence of last night's attack are covered and leaving Gran in the care of Ms Judy, the home nurse, I finally started to make my way to school. One good thing about living so close to the public school is that even when Gran has her early morning fits, I'm almost never late.

Lost in thought, I quickly reach the school parking lot. Cars are distributed randomly throughout the lot, ranging from broken down lemons to high dollar convertibles. Since I live so close to the school, driving and cars never became something I stressed over. I have much more important things to worry about.

The April weather surrounds me as I walk with my head down through the parking lot. My mind goes back to the conversation with Gran. Questions kept popping into my head needing answers.

Who was Gran talking about? Was my mom in a bad relationship? Was it with my father? Was he-

My train of thought is suddenly stopped when I slam into someone, hit liquid flying everywhere. I immediately take a few steps back, unsure of what just happened. I go to apologize when I hear, "You freakin klutz. You've completely ruined my brand new Louis Vuitton purse. This is one of only five in the world!"

I look up to see none other than Kathleen Baker and her group of pathetic puppies behind her. Kathleen is just like every other stereotypical mean girl. She's got the salon perfect blonde hair, the most expensive clothes, cars, friends. You name it. She's got the rich daddy who also just happens to be the mayor of this small town. Not to mention, she's the captain of the cheerleading squad. Cliche, right?

Rolling my eyes, I take in my newly coffee stained pullover. Thank god, I have a tank top underneath. I look up to find a fuming Kathleen glaring at me.

"So? You just expect me to let you walk off like nothing happened when you've completely ruined my bag? Oh no, I don't think so. My father will hear about this" she screeches, flinging the still halfway full cup of coffee around.

I roll my eyes. I can't believe how privileged this girl is. I few drops of coffee and she acts like the world is ending. Her dramatic antics spike my temper. An image of the cup of coffee boiling over and exploding over Kathleen pops in my mind. A smile blooms onto my face at the idea.

"Hello?" My attention is brought back to Kathleen, her hand waving closely in front of my face. "Are you stupid or something?" Her minions laugh at her comment. I look around, noticing Kathleen's tantrum had brought on the attention of most of the students in the parking lot.

My jaw clenches as my anger rises, boiling like the coffee had just moments ago in my mind. As Kathleen and her minions continue laughing, something builds inside me. That anger that had surfaced turning into something more.

Kathleen's face, once filled with hatefulness and amusement, quickly changes to one of pain. She cries out as coffee that's left in her cup spews up and over Kathleen's face and bag. Her hands fly upward, releasing the cup in her hand, and screams at the top of her lungs.

"Argh," her fingers fly through her newly wet hair as coffee drips down her face. I can't contain the laugh that spills out of my mouth. Her head jerks upward and her eyes lock onto me.

"You," she points her perfectly manicured finger at me, "You did this! What the hell did you do?"

I give no reply as her body shakes with rage and she hastily turns towards the school, her minions following close behind.

My gaze stays latched onto the group as they walk away. Did I do that? How could I? I was nowhere near her. But I was just thinking about that exact occurrence. Or was it just a coincidence?

Before I have time to reflect on anything I hear the pounding of sneakers coming towards me.

"Holy shit Chlo, you did not just do that," my best friend Alex says as he makes his way towards me. He sports his new bright pink hair with pride as he watches Kathleen storm away.

"What? She deserved it. If it hadn't been me it would have been someone else" I shrug.

Kathleen is the worst bully, and I'd rather her take it all out on me than someone who doesn't deserve it.

Alex and I make our way into the school when we hear our names being squealed from behind us. Bright red hair zooms past us as we make it to the front of the school.

"Please tell me I didn't miss another scandal," Chelsea pants. Her eyes move back and forth between Alex and me. I smile weakly at her.

"NO! Not again. I always miss the good stuff," Chelsea pouts. Chelsea is also one of my best friends. She's been with me for as long as I can remember. Her naturally bright red hair and thoughtful green eyes were the first things that drew me to her.

I chuckle, "Come on you guys. Let's go. We're gonna be late." They bother groan as we make our way into another miserable eight hour school day.

"Chloe Andrews, please report to the principal's office. Chloe Andrews to the principal's office."

The announcement from the intercom can hardly be heard over the loud commotion of students in the hallway. The student filling instantly start to whisper, coming up with their own speculations on what happened earlier. I stand outside my locker, grabbing everything I need for the big test next period. I had hoped to put in a little study time in before class, but that seemed to be too good to be true. I wave to Chelsea and Alex across the hall and motion that I'm heading to the office.

The principal's office is a place that I frequent a bit more that I should. After Paw passed and Gran's health started going downhill, I went through a really rough phase. I hardly came to school, and when I did, I was just a nuisance. I got into more fights at 15 than I'm proud to admit. But eventually Principal Carter put two and two together and realized how my home life was. Instead of turning me in to social services like most teachers, she helped me adjust into my new life. Carter and I have a pretty good relationship, so being called to the principal's office doesn't really bother me.
I walk past the secretary giving her a nod of acknowledgement.

"I'm sorry, but you can't go in there. Mrs. Carter is—"

I keep walking, dismissing the secretary with a wave of my hand. I open the door to Carter's office and plop down into the brown leather recliner placed in the corner. After many visits to this office, this recliner has become my best friend.

Mrs. Carter shakes her head at me as she continues speaking on the phone.

"Yes Miss Baker, I understand. Yes that was a very expensive purse. Yes ma'am. I understand. I will definitely take care of it. Yes ma'am. Thank you."

Mrs. Carter hangs up the phone, letting out a frustrated groan.

"Really Chloe? Already? We're not even through first period and I'm already getting phone calls about some stupid purse."

With no real explanation of what happened earlier, I play along with the story. I shrug, "It was an accident. I wasn't paying attention and I ran into her. Yeah, I might have spilled a little coffee on her purse, but it was her fault just as much as mine."

"I understand, Chloe. Kathleen can be a bit challenging at times, but you can't let her get to you. You're so close to graduating, less than a month away. Don't let her ruin it," Mrs. Carter opens her desk drawer, pulling out the pink detention slips.

"WHAT? Detention? Why?? I didn't even do anything! I don't have time for some stupid detention," I stand, annoyed that I have to be punished when you know Miss Louis Vuitton is getting off with a brand new $5k purse.

"I know Chloe. But I have to punish you somehow. I can't just let you off. Just today. That's it. You can live through one detention. Okay?" Carter looks at me, pleading.

I snatch the slip from her hand and agree. She tells me to hurry back to class, so grab up my book bag and head out of her office. As I walk out her door, the strap on my book bag decides that now is the time to rip out of its seams. The bag crashes to the ground causing all its contents to scatter across the floor. Everything from books to clothes and even tampons burst out of my bag onto the floor.

"Great. Just great," I mumble.

I bend down and start picking up my things. I hear footsteps coming my way. Thinking it's the new secretary coming to help me, I'm a bit shocked when a masculine, tan hand comes to my aid instead.

I slowly raise my head, taking in the appearance of my helper as I go along. The hunter green sweatshirt does well to hide the body underneath. The only thing that I can notice is that his shoulders fill out the hoodie well. My eyes travel up his neck to his face. His luscious lips are slightly open, as if he was about to say something. My eyes darted up to his dark brown hair. It's length is perfect. Not too short and not too long. It looks like he has that "I don't care, but I definitely spent a good amount of time working on this."

I finally reach his eyes and I'm shocked as to what I find. The most beautiful green eyes I have ever seen stare back at me. With his eyes green mixed with a bit of brown, I think I could stare at them all day. Something about them seems so familiar but I can't place from exactly where.

"Wow. You're definitely not the secretary," I whisper to myself.

His green eyes narrow in on me, taking in my obvious staring.

"If you wanted my attention all you had to do was ask," Green eyes says. Cockiness drips from his mouth with every word.

I can feel the heat rising to my face, "I was not trying to-"

"I mean, you even ruined your bag just for a chance to speak to me. Wow. I feel honored," Green eyes continued, not even acknowledging that I had spoken.

My jaw drops. What? How can someone be so arrogant? Green eyes continues to smile at me, amusement all over his face. I try to think of something to say but for once I'm speechless.
"Speechless huh? Don't worry sweetheart, I'll have you screaming my name in no time."

Green eyes gives me a cheeky wink as he stands back up.

"Mr. Hart, thank you for finally gracing us with your presence. In my office. Now."

Hart gives me one final smile as he follows Mrs. Carter into her office.

Still unsure of what just happened, I slowly pick up the rest of my things. I faintly hear the sound of the bell, signaling the end of first period. I shake my head in hopes of getting rid of any lingering thoughts about Mr. Hart, but no matter what I did my mind kept coming back to him and those familiar green eyes.
