Everything already passed. They met too late. There was the first inebriating spring inhale and there was the exhale of the last remnants of love, and you can't seem to be able to take such a deep breath anymore.
They knew and understood it. Now they were sitting opposite each other at a table in a small coffee shop. The big city, festive and ready for the New Year's celebrations, was shining behind the window. Winter was in the heart.
This long-awaited meeting after all of the years didn't bring them what was promised by his unexpected call.
- We should probably meet, how are you?
She has been wishing for this for so long and now: he is a grey-haired twice-divorced father of three; she is a graceful married grandmother of two.
There is still a sea of unused love, but her first breath has already been taken, and when it jolted at its peak she almost suffocated, almost died. And then there was a long and sickening exhale. The exhale of the unrequited love, that burned and melted her from within.
It took years to exhale that love out of the chest completely. And now this attempt to inhale just a little bit, even if the head starts spinning. She needed that fresh gulp so much. The bits of that unspent love or the nascent signs of the new one were peering through their evaluating gazes.
What will the rest of her life turn out like? Will they be together again? I don't know, maybe not anymore, even though once everything began full of beauty and happiness.
Him: Hi, you look great.
Her: You too.
Him: How are you? How's life?
Her: Doing just fine. Slowly getting old.
Him: I am not a spring chicken anymore either.
Her: Why did you want to see me?
Him: Is everything really ok with you?
Her: Yes, why?
Him: I don't know why, but I worry about you. It all turned out quite badly then.
Her: Yes. It hurt a lot. But it's in the past now, I am happy.
Him: Let's toast to you then. I also ordered your favorite eclairs. Do you still like them?
Her: Almost as much as then.
They left the coffee shop as acquaintances. Life flew by and the saying seemed true: you can't enter the same water twice. Even though sometimes you wish you could.
