Chapter 5
A/N: The other chapter as promised. It's late, in know, but I hit my word count and I made sure that this chapter is published😁😁😁
So, at the end of NaNoWriMo week one, here's what I achieved:
It doesn't look too bad... (yet!) 😂😂😂
Here's to week 2!!! 💪
***
The next day, Ayesha woke up only to find Kabir and Sunny in her house for breakfast. It was a very rare occurrence especially when Sunny never gets up before noon and Kabir didn't get along with her father (and his stepfather).
And yet there they were, her father sitting at the one end of the table, her mother on one side and Arjun on the other. Sunny sat next to Arjun and Kabir next to him, at the farthest side of the table.
"Good morning," she greeted.
"Good morning," they replied.
Ayesha took her seat next to her mother and directly in front of Sunny. Sunny smiled at her and she smiled back.
"Ayesha," her father spoke up. "How's your first day at work?"
"It was fun," she replied. "I met a lot of new people. Kabir bhaiya and Arjun are doing quite well too."
"That's good," he said. "I'm glad you're enjoying yourself. However, don't let this distract you from your studies. You still have to complete them."
"I know dad," Ayesha responded with an eye-roll.
"I'm just looking out for you, young lady," he said. "You don't have to roll your eyes at me. You have a bright future and I don't want to see you throw it all away."
"Kehna kya chati ho (What are you trying to say)?" Kabir asked, annoyed. "Are you still mad at me for dropping out of university?"
"I wasn't talking to you, Kabir," his step-father replied. "And like I told you it's your choice that you want to drop out. No one forced you to continue studying or to drop out."
Kabir looked away, annoyed. Ravi Desai isn't a horrible person, in fact, he was far from it. He had cared for Kabir since he was a child and had tried to foster a relationship with him. Kabir just didn't like the fact that his step-father was against the idea of Kabir being a rockstar and on top of that, he was trying to brainwash Arjun, his youngest, to follow in his footsteps.
"So dad," Ayesha said, trying to deviate the situation from going out of hand. "How was your business meeting yesterday?"
"It went well," Ravi replied. "If all goes well, the Aroras and us might end up becoming business partners sooner than we think."
Ayesha nodded, half listening. Her attention, however, was focused on Kabir. She knew how much he hated "family events" where her father was around.
She picked up the box of breakfast cereal from the middle of the table and begun filling the bowl in front of her.
"Phir se cereal (Cereal again)?" Seema asked. "There's so much food on the table..."
"Mom," Kabir cut her off. "Just leave her alone. She'll learn her lesson when she becomes a broomstick."
Ayesha's mouth hung open in disbelief, as Kabir laughed. Ayesha tried to kick Kabir under the table but ended up kicked Sunny instead.
"Ouch," Sunny cried out in pain and in surprise.
"Kya kar rahe ho (What are you doing)?" Kabir asked, slightly amused. "Why are you hurting our driver? If you don't want to go to the studio, just let me know."
"Shut up," Ayesha sulked.
"Stop it," Ravi scolded the both of them. Although he knew the both of them loved pulling each other's legs, he also knew that sometimes things may get out of hand out as the both of them were equally unwilling to concede. "Kabir apologize to your sister and Ayesha apologize to Sunny."
"Sorry," Ayesha said embarrassingly to Sunny. She hadn't expected her father to chastise her like a kid and in front of Sunny of all people. Now she'll never hear the end of this.
"I'm sorry," Kabir then said to Ayesha. "I'm sorry that you'll never get a decent apology from me."
Kabir laughed and sped off. Ayesha got up to chase him. However, he was already out of the door when she finally stood up. Dejected, she slums back into her chair.
I'll get him, Ayesha thought to herself. Just you wait, Kabir Varma!
Sunny gave her a mischievous look which meant that he was on her side. She smiled back at him, excited to know she wouldn't be alone in pranking Kabir.
Later on their way to the studio, Ayesha found out that Kabir's car battery had died as he forgot to turn the headlights off. As Sunny's place is the nearest to his, he called Sunny for help to which Sunny begrudgingly accepted. She also found out that his car was currently at the mechanic, waiting for a battery change. An evil thought crossed her mind.
When they reached the studio, Abhay and a few dancers were already there.
"I talked to Rahul sir earlier about your idea," Abhay told Ayesha. "He said it would be alright but he wants to audition them first."
"That's fair," Ayesha replied. "I currently have someone in mind but I'm not sure if she'll do it. She has an overprotective brother."
"Then get her brother to join too," Abhay joked.
Ayesha returned it with an 'are you serious?' look which immediately shuts him up.
"Bad joke," Abhay quipped as he clears his throat. He then reverted to his professional self. "Vishal just passed me the final song list. They have decided to choose Tareef Karoon Kya Uski and then use Bachna Ae Haseeno as the end to the first half. They agreed that Aadat Se Majboor would be the opening for the second half and the concert ends with Vele. Everything else is in between."
"I know," Ayesha mumbled as she took a look at the list. "Two of the band members are my brothers."
Abhay had completely forgot about that fact. Initially he wasn't sure about Ayesha's involvement as he thought she got in because of Kabir and Arjun. But after spending some time with her, he was convinced that Ayesha got in because of her own merits (and that Kabir was impossible to please).
"So," Ayesha continued. "As discussed yesterday, we'll start with the opening number and then move on to the rest later."
"Ok," Abhay agreed and rounded up the dancers.
The day went by without a hitch and Ayesha and Abhay had managed to finish teaching everyone their dance moves. As they bid the dancers goodbye, Ayesha asked if Abhay could help bring her to the mechanic shop where Kabir's car was at.
As it turns out, Abhay's family owned the garage which made moving Kabir's car was a lot easier than she thought. She then called Sunny and told him her plan (which he thought was amazing) and agreed to meet at Kabir's place. As Kabir had paid for the car earlier, all Ayesha needed to do was to carefully drive the car to Kabir's house.
"What took you so long?" Sunny asked upon Ayesha's arrival.
"I haven't driven in a while and this is Kabir's car," she answered. "You know how particular he is about his car, na? Now, did you bring the stuff?"
"Of course," Sunny replied and handed her a box.
The first thing that Ayesha pulled out was a button up checked shirt that without a doubt belonged to Sunny. She could the lingering smell of his cologne on it as she put it on. Then, she pulled out a cap which she used to tuck all her hair in it. Her last part of her disguise was in the form of black water colour which she smeared all over her face to make it look like grease and dirt.
"So?" Ayesha asked. "How do I look?"
"Almost perfect," Sunny replied. He then wrapped a handkerchief over Ayesha's face. "There, now your brother will never recognize you."
Sunny could see Ayesha smiling from underneath the handkerchief.
"You're the best," Ayesha told him and left.
"I'm definitely the best," Sunny said to himself.
Ayesha made her way to her brother's apartment and rang the door bell. After half a minute, he appeared at the door.
"Yes?" Kabir asked.
"Main garage se (I'm from the garage)..." Ayesha said in a lower register of her voice as she handed Kabir his receipt and car keys. Ayesha thought that the handkerchief must have helped muffle her voice, as her brother hasn't called her out on her disguise yet (that or her brother was really stupid).
"Acha (Right)," Kabir replied. "Thank you."
"Koi baat nahi (It's ok)," Ayesha replied in her disguised voice. "Chalta hoon, saab (I'm going, sir)."
"Haan," Kabir said as Ayesha in her disguise left.
The moment that she spotted Sunny, she launched herself at him.
"Woah," he said. "Be careful not to get stains on my shirt."
"Sorry," she apologized. "And thank you."
Ayesha removed all her disguise and returned them to Sunny. When she removed the handkerchief, she realized that it was slightly stained by the water colour.
"I'll wash it and return it to you," she told Sunny.
"It's ok," he replied. "You can keep it. Prank ki memory samajhlo (Think of it as a memory of the prank)."
She smiled and got into his car.
"I can't wait to see the look on Kabir's face when he realized what we have done," Sunny said.
"Neither can I," Ayesha agreed.
***
Kabir was checking his receipt when he realized that there was writing behind.
Call me when you want to apologize.
Sincerely, your broomstick behen♡
Initially, Kabir was confused at the message. As realization dawns on him, he quickly made his way to the car.
"No!" Kabir exclaimed as he saw the condition of his car.
He immediately opened the door and got in, examining the damage Ayesha had caused. He ran his hand through his hair, in a state of confusion and disbelief.
He was somewhat impressed at Ayesha's efforts and level of commitment. How was she able to drive the car from the garage to his place without causing an accident and to top it off, perfectly put a steering lock on his car?
Suddenly, Kabir started laughing. Of course! He recalled memories of her last semester break where at her college, he taught her how to drive as well as a few road survival skills such as changing the tyre, checking the car for engine oil and water levels, how to put petrol in the car when there isn't a petrol station nearby, pumping air into the tyres and you guessed it, how to use a steering lock.
The student has surpassed the master, Kabir thought to himself. Just this time, I'll let her win.
