Chapter 9

"Your mom got mad?" Reese asked as Heather and him were walking together to English.

"Yes."

"Woah, she's overprotective, isn't she?"

"She isn't overprotective, she was just worried because it was so unlikely of me to disappear like that," said Heather as she turned the corner, with the books clutched to her chest.

"Well looks like you have to do it often for her to get used to it," Reese smirked.

Heather turned her head towards him and raised her eyebrows as if saying, What the hell are you thinking?

As they got to class, Heather kept her assignment on top of the teacher's table and gave Mr Diggory a small smile. Then she turned back to Reese who was waiting for her to submit her homework.

Mr Diggory looked up from the book in his hands to see the couple walking back to their seat, side by side.

That afternoon, Heather was sitting with Maya and her friends as usual at the cafeteria. While the girls were busy talking about the latest gossips, Heather was focused on biting down on her sandwich.

Anyone who looked towards them would think that Heather was just an outsider and not a part of their group at all. Well, it was partly true.

Maya was her close friend and she loved her. But her introverted self never bothered to befriend her group, neither did they.

When Reese entered the room with his pack of jocks, almost a lot of eyes in the room fell on them

Walking to his usual spot, he eyed Heather giving her a wink.

Even though his friends where talking about things that always fascinated him, Reese's eyes were fixed on Heather, whose back was facing him.

It was obvious that she did not enjoy their company.

Even when with him who she 'claims' to dislike, she spoke even if it was merely to annoy him. But here, her body language was completely different.

Should I invite her to sit with us?

He turned his head towards his group of friends. Will the boys be okay with it?

The day almost got over, the only period left was math and nothing could excite Reese more than that.

After taking his books from his locker he was running towards Heather's locker, hoping they could walk to math together, just like they did in English.

As he reached her, she was walking away after closing her locker door.

"Hey," said Reese, almost breathless.

"Well, hello again."

The walk to math class was short, so they didn't get much time for chit-chat. As they were entering the classroom Heather asked, "So you nervous?"

"Nervous? About what?"

"About the test."

Reese let out a sigh as he settled on his seat, "Well, not anymore."

Just as he let those words out of his mouth, Mrs Reagan walked in with a stack of papers in her hands.

"What the hell. Are those the test answers that we took last Friday?" asked Reese pointing to them.

Heather nodded her head with a straight smile.

"Shit! I'm done."

"I thought you said you weren't nervous about your test anymore," Heather smiled at Reese, teasing him a little bit.

"But, I never expected her to bring the test back today itself."

"Why else did you think I was asking you about your test again," she leaned back on her chair, "Mrs Reagan always gives back the test as soon as possible. She functions like a robot honestly, very up to date."

Reese's reply to her was cut off by Mrs Reagan's booming voice.

"As you can see, I've bought your tests back. Some have done well while others not very good. But I just want you to know that this is just the first test of this year and how you perform in this is not gonna define the rest of your year. You still have time to study and keep up your grades. So don't worry if you don't get what you expected."

With that, she started giving out the papers.

"Wait, is this really Mrs Reagan or her twin?" Reese asked a little bewildered.

"She's very strict when it comes to classes and homework. But she will never get mad at you if you don't do well on a test. She says trying your best is more important."

"Heather Rosannah Daniels"

Heather walked up to the teacher, taking her test from.

"What did you get?" Reese whispered under her breathe.

She turned the sheet towards him, showing a huge red 'A' marked on the top of the paper.

Reese raised his eyebrows mouthing the word Impressive.

"Reese Kirby"

"Shit! That's me," said Reese which came louder than expected.

The whole class went quiet. Some of them looked shocked, others were impressed at his courage in using a swear word in front of their 'nightmare of a teacher'. Heather was crouching beside him, doing a very bad job at suppressing her laugh, which made her to produce some really odd sounds similar to that of a pig snorting.

Mrs Reagan's eyes were tearing down through his body. Reese let out a chuckle and said, "Sorry about that."

He went up to her, grabbed his test paper from her and walked back to his seat, without bothering to look at his grade.

Heather who was still snorting, turned to face Reese's face which was as red as a tomato.

"So, what did you get?"

"Oh, I- I didn't look."

"Then do it."

Reese looked at the sheet of paper laying on this lap, hesitating to check his grade.

"Are you gonna do it or should I do it for you?" Heather asked himimpatiently.

"Nah, it's fine. I'll do it."

Reese flipped the paper and peered down checking the red inked alphabet written on his paper.

"I- I got... I got a B," said Reese his eyes still fixed on the paper.

"See I told you you will get a good grade."

"I got a B."

"You got the potential in you, the only problem is you are a little lazy. Maybe a tutor like me was all that you needed," said Heather crossing her arms.

"I got a B," Reese repeated, his eyes not leaving the test sheet.

"I heard you."

"How? I usually get a D."

"Well, because you have me, your amazingly smart tutor," she said pointing toward herself.

He gave her a smile, "I'm happy that I have got you."

Heather and Reese walked out of the campus after class.

"Are you sure you wanna study there?" asked Heather a little doubtful.

"Why not? We always study in the library," said Reese. "It's not that I don't like the library, but a change of place is nice sometimes."

"You do have a point."

"Plus, we can't sneak food into the library but we can eat as much as we want at the cafe," said Reese giving Heather his stupidest grin ever.

"And don't worry about paying, today is my treat as I got a B for math."
