Chapter 2
Today was the day Heather and her mother were to go back to Indiana. Saying goodbye to her father's family was harder than she thought. Even though Ohio and Indiana were only three hours apart, she knew that she wouldn't be visiting them any time soon.
"I can't believe that you are leaving already," said Lilly standing at the doorway of her room.
Heather was packing the last few things before she left the town of Morgan to her very own Indianapolis.
"Well actually we've been here for two whole months. Are you sure you are not bored of me?"
"Are you serious? Sharing my room with you and playing Jenga all night was the best thing ever."
She gave Heather a long glance.
"Heath," Lilly walked toward her cousin placing a hand on her arm.
"I'm gonna miss you."
Heather quickly pulled Lilly into a hug and told her that she would miss her too and that she'll give them a call as soon as she reaches home.
"Heather!" Linda called her from downstairs.
"Coming mom!"
As Heather ran down the stairs, she saw her mother hugging her grandmother.
"Take care, Linda. Don't let anything affect you. No matter what happens, we all are with you. We are a family."
Linda rises, wiping a tear away from her eyes. Turning to the right, she sees her daughter all ready to leave.
"Come say goodbye to your grandma Heath, then your Aunt will drive us to the bus stop."
Putting her bags down, Heather went and kneeled beside her grandmother's rocking chair. She then placed her hands on her lap while her grandmother was patting on her head lovingly.
"Don't give your mother a hard time okay? Listen to her and focus on your studies. I know you missed a week of school because of all this, but you are a smart girl, you'll be able to catch up."
"Yes Grandma, I will. I'm gonna miss you." Heather gave her grandmother a gentle hug.
"But don't worry we'll be coming over for thanksgiving. Just make sure to make some delicious turkey for your granddaughter."
"Sure honey and also, tell your brother not to overwork himself and to spend more time with you and your mother. You'll be fine."
"Sure grandma, but now I have to go. Goodbye," Heather gave her grandmother a final hug and rushed out the door with her bags.
"Bye Lilly, I'm going to miss you so much.", giving her one final hug she got into the backseat of her Aunt's Honda, waving at her cousin as the car drove away.
The bus stop was only fifteen minutes away. So they reached it before they even knew. The bus was to leave at 5 o'clock. They had almost twenty minutes left, so Heather decided to spend it by going to the nearby bakery to buy some cookies for herself while her mother and Aunt have some final chit-chat.
Once it was time to leave, they said their goodbyes to Karen and the town of Morgan.
'Hotel California' by Eagles was playing in the bus. Sitting near the window of the bus while listening to music relaxes every human being. The sun was setting and the wind was blowing causing some strands of hair to escape out of Heather's neatly braided hair. Her auburn hair resembled the sky and her light brown eyes watched the sunset in pure awe and admiration. The brilliantly red and orange colours mixing and then fading like the gliding ocean made Heather feel a sense of warmth and calmness.
All she felt was absolute bliss, and wished for that moment to last forever.
Being in such a relaxed state, Heather's eyes started closing in the same pace as the sun. Just like that, she fell asleep with her head resting against the windowpane.
A loud commotion woke Heather up. She felt a slight dizziness due to the quick change of balance in her body.
It was a new moon night and if it weren't for the streetlights, she wouldn't have been able to make out the congested road outside. She turned to her mother to ask her what the loud noise was and why they haven't reached their destination yet.
But her mother was as confused as her about everything going on.
That's when Heather heard the roaring of a motorbike coming from somewhere. When she gazed towards the origin of the sound, she saw two spectacularly muscular men on what looked like two motorbikes used for street racing.
Suddenly two young men came out of nowhere, running towards the motorbikes all set to take off like a jet. One of those men already got on top of one of the motorbikes while the other one was still behind.
He had a rather happy expression and a small smile of excitement on his face even though there were a few cops running after him.
With one swift jump over a car parked on the side of the road, he was on top of the motorbike. That was some stunt Heather has only seen in Bruce Lee movies.
Without wasting any more time, the guys drove off into the dimly lit alleyway.
The road cleared shortly after the conflict and the vehicles started moving.
Even though her father used to be a cop, Heather knew he would have been impressed at what that young boy did. Her father was always a huge fan of action movies and adventures, probably one of the reasons why he became a cop.
The bus reached the bus stop in less than ten minutes and Linda and Heather called a taxi to go home.
Heather opened the door to her house and scanned the halls, thinking about all the time she spent with her family. She remembered all those times when her whole family gathered in the living room to play monopoly. She could still smell her mother's favourite scrambled eggs with roasted veggies that she prepared for dinner on Saturdays.
"Basil, are you home?" Linda called out for her son.
Basil came out of the kitchen holding a spatula.
"Oh, hey you guys are here. So, how was the ride?"
"It was good until it reached Indianapolis."
"Oh what happened?", Basil was retreating back to the kitchen.
"There were a few young men who were blocking the road for some reason. Probably a stupid fight or something."
"They didn't look hurt though," said Heather.
"Yeah whatever it was, let's not talk about that. I want both of you to go back to your room and take a quick shower. I'm making mom's favourite scrambled egg with roasted veggies for dinner today. I also bought some butter cookies for you, Heath," Basil told his mother and sister.
Heather smiled a little knowing that at least her brother was doing well.
Once dinner was over, Heather went back to her room and took out her diary. She wrote all about that day, how hard it was for her to say goodbye to her father's family, the breathtaking sunset she witnessed, and the bustle at Paca Street.
After two months she was back at her house, in her room, laying on her bed, staring at the ceiling with glow in the dark stickers which she and her brother stuck when they were kids.
With all the tiredness due to the long journey back home, Heather fell asleep.
She couldn't wait for school to get started. She wanted a distraction and school with all the endless work was exactly what she needed.
