Chapter 9

"What a long night," I yawned walking inside.

"Yeah it's almost midnight." I quickly turned and saw my mom in the kitchen making a drink.

"What are you doing home so early?"

"I got off early today." She continued stirring her drink.

"Oh. Well I'm going off of bed. I'm pretty tired." I stretched. I was about to walk up the stairs, but the seriousness in her voice caught my attention.

"Stop. Come here."

I sighed. I really don't want to have a serious conversation at midnight.

"Sit," She said.

"Mom im tired, I don't feel like doing this-"

"Just sit, please." I could hear the sadness in her voice making me worry. I sat in the chair farthest from her, "What do you want to talk about?" I asked.

"So, how was school?" She took a sip of her drink.

"Fine." I stared at her, trying to see if she's trying to play with me.

"That's good. What about that counselor of yours? How is she?"

"What are you doing?" I asked, glaring at her.

"What do you mean? I'm asking about your day-"

"Never in seventeen years of my life have you asked me about my day. Now I'm going to ask again, what are you doing?"

She put her drink on the table. She sighed, "I really need to talk to you about something."

"What is it?"

"I'm sorry."

"W-What?" I said, confused.

"I said I'm sorry. For everything. I know I need to change and I promise I will."

"You've said that for the last ten years of my life." I whispered, "and not once have you ever kept your promise."

"And I'm sorry-"

"Sorry for what? All those time you've went out to a bar and drank your life away leaving your ten year old daughter at home alone, or are you sorry for the times where you've forgotten about me and left me alone to drown in my own misery! Making me feel alone! You've never been there for me, so why do you think you can make a change now!"

"I'm trying to fix this! Can't you see that I'm trying to fix us!" She yelled.

Tears were burning my eyes as I tried to hold them in, "you're seventeen years too late for that." I ran upstairs and slammed the door to my room. I slid down my door and brought my knees close to my chest.

"I'm sorry Lucy!" She yelled, covering her mouth, "I'm so sorry..." I could hear her muffled cries from the other side, "I never meant to hurt you."

I climbed in my bed and did the only thing I knew what to do in these situations. I watched the stars.

They were beautiful tonight. They were shining as bright as ever.

Even though we don't have many, I do have one good memory of me and my mom. We used to always look at the stars at night. We would sit out in the grass and count how many stars there were. She even taught me about the constellations.

But, those days are over.

I set my alarm and closed my eyes letting sleep take over.

Over and over I kept hearing the doorbell ring. I groaned and groaned and tossed and turned in my bed waiting for the nuisance to go away.

The doorbell just kept ringing.

"That's it!" I screamed. I grabbed the bat sitting next to my door.

These people are playing with fire!

I opened my door and raised the bat over my head.

"What's up Luce?" Natsu was standing at my door, smiling.

Eh?!

"N-Natsu what are you doing here?"

"I told you last night that I was picking you up early." He looked up and saw the bat, "What are you going to do with that?"

I looked up at the bat and immediately threw it in my living room, smashing a vase, "Oh, nothing."

I looked over at the clock and saw that it was two hours before I actually have to wake up for school.

I should've hit him with that bat.

"Why so early?" I rubbed my eyes.

"Because we are spending the whole day together before the art show tommorow."

"But we have school today."

"Yeah, but today were skipping."

Eh? I needed a break anyway.

"So hurry up and get dressed." He pushed me inside.

"Fine, fine." I giggled at his enthusiasm.

"Yeah, I have a bunch of things planned for us today."

"Like what?"

"It's a Suprise. Now hurry and go get ready."

I groaned, "I hate being suprised."

I got dressed, brushed my teeth, washed my face.

"Alright, finished." I walked down stairs to see Natsu sitting on the couch looking at some of my family pictures.

"D-Dont touch those." I ran and tried to grab it from him but I was too short and he was way stronger than me.

"Is this you?" He showed me one of my baby photos, when I was missing my two front teeth, "so cute!"

I started reaching for it, "come on Natsu! Give it back!"

He set it back on the table and picked up another photo. It was a picture of me, my mom, and my dad.

"Is this your mom and dad?" He asked.

"Yes!" I continued reaching for the picture.

"How come you never talk about your family?"

"Because I don't want too, now please get away from my stuff!" I grabbed the picture and placed the it face down.

He was shocked by my sudden outburst, "Sorry..." he rubbed the back of his neck, "I shouldn't have been snooping."

"It's fine, lets just get going." I grabbed my coat and headed out toward his truck. I probably shouldn't have yelled at him like that, but my parents aren't really something I like to talk about.

He walked out the door locking it from behind.

I turned to him, "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have-"

"Lucy, it's ok. I shouldn't have been snooping in the first place."

"I know you were just curious, but I shouldn't have yelled at you."

"It's fine. I'm a big boy, I think I can handle someone yelling at me."

I laughed, "you would've fooled me."

"Hey, nothing on me is little anymore." He smirked.

"Gross." I pushed him, laughing.

We were driving down the street and I was still clueless about where we were going.

"Natsu! Where are we going!" I whined.

"It's a Suprise, princess."

"Don't call me princess." I pouted, "this better be a good suprise for waking me up at almost six in the morning," I whispered.

"It's a good suprise, don't worry."

Shit! He heard me!

It was still a little dark, but it was enough light to see that we were headed into my favorite part of town.

The park.

I was almost hopping out of seat due to the excitement rushing through my body. How could someone not love the park? The plants, the animals, the peaceful silence. It can't get any better than that.

"We're here." Natsu hopped out the car and opened the door for me.

"Are we going to take a walk or something?" Not that I didn't mind or anything.

"Not exactly." He grabbed my hand and led me to an entrance I've never seen before.

"Where are you taking me?" We were walking down a dark path.

"Just be patient," he chuckled.

Patience is not in my vocabulary.

He covered my eyes and walked me the last few steps.

"Ok... now open!" He dropped his hands and revealed a picnic blanket with a basket laid out on the grass.

"Oh my gosh..." I gasped, "you did this?"

He smiled, "Do you like it?"

"Of course!" To be honest, I was really happy because of the picnic basket. Because, Picnic basket equals food.

"Shall we sit my lady?" He put his hand out for me to grab.

"We shall." We both laughed.

"I hope you know this isn't the only suprise I have planned for us today."

"If they're anything like this then I don't care what suprise you throw at me." I stuffed my face with the turkey sandwiches he made.

He smiled, "That's good to know."
