Chapter 8

I had to put my story on hold when Tom informed us that we were about 5 minutes from The Grand Suite, a hotel we were planning to stay in for the night. We were just a few hours from the border that separates West Virginia from Pennsylvania. The sun had finally disappeared behind the millions of trees that formed the landscape, and it wasn't long before Tom switched on the headlights to avoid driving through the darkness of the night.

I was secretly glad that I could finally put the story to a pause. My throat had gone hoarse way to long ago, and I was getting tired of listening to the sound of my own voice.

But Marinette parents loved listening to me for some reason. They were completely invested in the story, and their eagerness to hear more reminded me of little kids being fascinated by a magic trick.

When we finally arrived at the hotel, I helped unload and haul our luggage into the building until we were able to grab a push cart. Once we had our room settled at the front desk, we took an elevator up to the 4th floor and quietly made our way down the carpeted halls so we wouldn't disturb the other guests.

An hour later, while Tom, Marinette and I were chilling on the hotel beds flipping through the channels on the flatscreen TV that hung from the wall opposite the beds, Sabine asked us what we should order for dinner.

"Chinese," Marinette said.

"Italian," I said.

"Italian," Marinette then said, who apparently changed her mind within seconds.

"Why not order both?" Tom suggested.

Sabine raised her eyebrows. "Chinese with Italian food?"

"Sure. We can just order a few pizzas and then everyone can order whatever they want from the Chinese food menu."

Marinette and I exchanged glances.

"Guess we'll be stuffed tonight," I chuckled.

She giggled before rolling off the bed and grabbing a menu off the dresser.

                                                      ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Adriennn...."

"Mmm..."

"Psst! Adrien!"

My sleepy eyes opened to find a silhouette Marinette knelt next to the edge of the sofa bed wearing a light pink bathing suit with a black and white floral side design and with an eager expression on her face. I rubbed my eyes with a groan and cast a quick glance over to the LED alarm clock that constantly blinked the time.

It was only 3:30 am.

"What's wrong, Marinette?" I asked, turning over onto my stomach.

"Let's go down to the pool" she whispered excitedly.

"What?"

"Come on, let's go!"

"It's too early," I mumbled, sinking my head deeper into my pillow, longing to go back to sleep. Why in the world was she up so early?

"Adriennn," she pleaded, keeping her voice low so she wouldn't wake her parents. "This is the perfect opportunity to go swimming. And your just gonna waste it by going back to sleep?"

"Sounds like a good idea to me."

"Oh, come on!"

"What suddenly gave you the inspiration to go swimming at 3 in the morning?"

"I couldn't sleep," she explained. "I slept all day in the car, remember?"

I felt a playful grin slowly grow on my face. "Yeah, and you were completely tuning me out while I was telling my story. Rude much?"

"I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you," she said, her bluebell eyes twinkling.

"Oh really? How?"

"By having so much fun with you at the pool."

I rose myself up into a sitting position. "Are you insane? Your parents will kill us. And the pool is probably closed anyway."

"No it isn't." she said. "I checked. It opens at 4 am. And as long as we don't wake up my parents, we'll be perfectly fine."

I sighed and decided to give in. "If we end up drowning, I'm blaming you," I whispered as I rose out of bed, the mattress's springs moaning from my lifted weight. We both froze as our eyes darted anxiously towards Tom as he turned in his sleep in the bed he shared with his wife.

Marinette stood up and quietly grabbed my hand before leading me away from the pull-out mattress to where the suitcases were. She signaled for me to get my swimsuit while she stuffed a few pillows underneath the covers over her own bed. I dug my hand into my suitcase after unzipping it as softly as I could. After rummaging around the clothe, and other miscellaneous objects, I pulled out a pair of swim trunks and tip-toed to the bathroom to change.

A minute later, we slipped out of the hotel room and were striding down the hallway towards the elevator, Marinette clutching the small hotel room key card in her hand.

A minute later as we were nearing the elevator, Marinette suddenly slapped her hand against her forehead in disappointment. "Aw, man!"

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"I forgot my purse," she replied, biting her lip. "We don't have anywhere to put the card when we get in the water."

"Maybe we should go back..." I said as I started to spin my heel towards the direction to our hotel room.

Marinette grabbed my arm and pulled me towards the elevators with a chuckle. "Nice try."

"Why, thank you." I joked.

I pushed the button with the downward arrow and placed my hands on my hips as we waited for the elevator doors to open. Once inside, Marinette pressed the button indicating the lobby floor, the doors re-closing as the elevator slowly lowered itself down to the bottom floor.

"I have an idea," said Marinette.

"Does your idea involve having any device we can use in case there's an emergency and we need to contact your parents?" I asked. I had just remembered that we didn't have our phones with us and we didn't have any type of communication with Tom or Sabine if something happened.

"Well, not really.." Marinette answered before teasing, "But even if something does happen, at least I have my knight in shining by my side."

"Yeah, well your 'knight in shining armor' would like to have his phone," I grumbled. "And go back to sleep."

"Anywayyy...so I think I know what to do with the card."

"Give it back to your parents?"

Marinette rolled her eyes. "No, you idiot."

The elevator doors finally opened. Marinette and I walked out in to the lobby and followed the arrows on the beige colored walls that lead to the pool, the smell of chlorine filling my nose even before we swung open the heavy doors.

On a wall next to the doors hung a huge rack of fresh white towels, and at the far side of the pool was a female lifeguard wearing a red swimsuit and idly sitting in her high chair tapping away at her phone.

Besides her, the area was deserted.

Well, not surprising since it was still around 4:15 am.

The lifeguard noticed our presence and smiled at us as if she was used to seeing teenagers swim so early in the morning. I politely smiled back before realizing Marinette had left my side. I turned and saw her grabbing two towels from the rack before handing me one and folding the other one neatly.

"You still didn't tell me your idea you had earlier," I told her.

Marinette grinned, as if she had a juicy secret that needed to be shared. "This is my idea."

"Handing me a towel?"

"You really are clueless, aren't you?"

"Ouch," I said, pretending to be hurt. "No need to be so mean, bugaboo."

"Whatever, you doofus. Now watch this..."

She held up the hotel key card in her hand, making sure I was watching her clearly, then slipped the card in the midst of the folded towel until it was completely hidden.

"Clever..." I said approvingly, though not the least bit surprised. Marinette often had creative ideas and was usually very resourceful.

"Why, thank you," she laughed, pretending to do a mini curtsy.

We placed the towels on a nearby chair and walked around the perimeter of the pool.

"Hey Marinette," I grinned mischeviously, "Remember when you said you'd make up for tuning me out in the car by having so much with me at the pool?"

"Yeah...and?"

A single shove had Marinette flying into the pool and me doubling over from laughing so hard. Her head popped up from the water, coughing and sputtering.

"Adrieennnnn," she whined.

I took a few steps back before running at full speed and cannon-balling into the pool, water splashing everywhere. I resurfaced and ran a hand through my hair to keep it from out of my eyes, a ridiculously huge smile on my face when I saw Marinette's playful frown.

"Are you having fun?" she asked, her voiced dripping in playful sarcasm.

"Oh, I'm having a terrific time," I replied smugly.

"Then you won't mind if I do this..." she dunked my head back into the water. "Karma hurts, doesn't it?"
