Chapter Three

Being popular wasn't part of Selah's plans but she enjoyed every bit of it. She hung out with a lot of people she eventually called friends but one person always caught her attention when she strolled round school with Ese; call it fate but this person always showed up at the exact same time she passed with him. She ignored it ocassionally cause it didn't matter and she wasn't crazy.

This particular evening, as she walked past the love tree, she called Ese's attention to the handsome guy who kept staring at her

'Ese, who is that guy? He always seems to be sitting by the tree everytime we pass.'

Ese looked back, immediately turned around and hissed. It was unlike him to behave sassy but she could tell that his countenance had changed.

'What is wrong?' she asked him, still holding his hands.

'Nothing. Just some random guy you should stay away from. He can't be your friend, okay!' he replied, looking sternly into her eyes to depict his seriousness. She looked back at him closely.

'Why? Is he your ex?' she laughed but became quiet when Ese looked at her.

'Don't you understand sense of humor? You're supposed to laugh. Jeez.'

'I'm serious Selah. He's bad news so stay away from him.'
She nodded in approval and dropped the subject.

Two days later, she received a call from a strange number. She picked the call but there was no response on the other end, so she kept walking to her class. Then her phone rang again; she stared at the strange number and picked the call.

'Turn around,' the voice said in a polite way.
This only happens in movies she thought to herself. Then she turned round. It was the handsome guy that Ese had warned her to stay away from. She ended the call as he walked up to her.

'Selah, right?' he asked as he got to her.

She looked at him, 'How do you know my name? And also, how did you get my number?'
The guy laughed and started walking, which made Selah follow suit.

'Pardon me. I saw you walking toward the faculty of Social Science and I am heading in that direction. Maybe we could go together.'

'You haven't answered my questions yet.' she said as she stopped walking.

'Okay. My name is Wale and I'm a friend of Ese. Old time buddies but still cool pals.'

'Ese has never mentioned your name. Maybe you have another name. What's your English name?' she asked him.

'Why are you asking? Are you a spy?' he giggled, revealing his white arranged teeth that sparked his handsome face. She shivered inside but cleared the naughty thoughts from her head.

'Nevermind,' she responded impatiently and continued, 'who gave you my number?' She looked at him, eyes reading that he hadn't answered her other question.

'Fine. I got it from a friend of mine, who happens to be one of your many friends. Shall we?' he said as he pointed in the direction they were headed. She hesitated but obliged and followed him.

Days later, Ese confronted Selah about her friendship with Wale.
'So now Wale is your new buddy? I told you to stay away from him.'

'Says the guy that won't tell me why? He is your friend na,' Selah said.

'You nor dey hear word. Na when you enter kbese, you go con call me.'

'He is just a friend, nothing more. Besides, I'm not dating him or sleeping with him, so chilax,' she replied and started eating her food.

Selah's friendship with Wale was blossoming everyday. They'd hang around in class, meet at the cafeteria and watch movies when they were together. Ese got angry and confronted her one evening when they were headed to the cafeteria.

'I don't like this your blossoming friendship with Wale. He is not a good person. Take it from someone that knows him.'

'Ese calm down. Don't be jealous. He's just a friend, nothing more.'
'I'm not jealous. Just watching out as a friend, so be careful. I won't choose your friends for you.'

'What's that supposed to mean? I'm not stupid you know.'

'No offense Selah. I'm concerned, and I care about you,' he mumbled, 'that's all.'

They talked some more and strolled round school before she got to her room.

'What's going on between you and this new guy,' Rikki asked when Selah stopped by her room. She blushed and tried ignoring the question.

'Nothing. We're friends and he's fun to  hang out with. Besides, even if I like him, it won't change anything.'

Rachel sighed. 'I'd stay clear from him. Handsome guys are scary,' she added.

'And beautiful girls are psychopaths,' Selah concluded and laughed.
