Chapter 8

The camera snapped a photo.

Sebastian greeting Harper enthusiastically, swinging her around like a rag doll.

The motor whirled again.

Harper laughing with Sebastian, their hands touched. Was this platonic?

Recording all the small moments that usually get overlooked. The powerful telephoto lens zoomed in for the smaller details. What they ate, what they were drinking. He was too far away to hear what they were saying, but close enough to see what a good time they were having. He lay the camera down on the front seat of his nondescript sedan and decided to go for a walk by the table to see if he could hear what was being said at the table.

He walked past their table and heard them joking with each other. They didn't even notice him linger briefly. He blended in with the crowd, tall and average, nothing out of the ordinary.

He went back to his car and dictated some observations into his dictaphone. He waited until they both left the cafe and discretely started tailing Harper's silver metallic Porsche Spyder. The top was down on the car and the wind whipped through her long dark toffee hair. He stayed with her until she turned into her street to go home. He did a loop around the block and then drove back past her house to make sure that she went home. He parked the nondescript sedan down the street to wait and see where she went next.

A couple of hours went by and Harper left the house again. He followed her closely to the supermarket, waiting for her in the car park. His deep set eyes watched her struggle with an arm load of groceries. He made his way over to her and bumped into her on purpose.

"Shit!" He apologised in his gravely voice. "I'm sorry sweetheart."

The bag split open and the groceries tumbled on to the black tarmac.

"No," Harper replied flustered, brushing her dark toffee hair back from her face. "No, it was my fault"

He bent to help her pick up the groceries and handed her a way ward apple. Harper smiled at him, her big blue eyes mesmerising him. He felt drawn in by her innocence.

"Thank you." She said warmly.

He watched her pick up the remaining wayward groceries and lift the hood of her car to put them away in her boot.

"Have a nice day." He called out to her, tipping the brim of his baseball cap cordially. Harper turned and smiled at him, giving him a small wave with her fingers before driving out of the car park. He made his way back to his car and continued to shadow her back her place, staying a few car lengths behind her. He parked in a different spot on the street and watched the house again.

Half an hour later, he watched a blond pear shaped woman of a medium height arrive in a black Jeep Wrangler. She strode up the steps purposefully, like she'd visited many times before. He lifted his camera to snap off a few more shots. He caught them kissing and hugging at the door, them holding hands as they entered the property.

Hello, he thought. Looks like things are finally getting more interesting!

He got out of his car to see if he could find a better vantage point to take some more photos.

Damn it. He cursed silently. There were no big windows facing the street and all the other windows on the property were on the sides that he couldn't access without going on the property or the neighbouring houses.

Oh well. His brain started ticking away. Will just have to make do with what I've got. Let's tail this woman that has come over and see what kind of information I can get.

A few hours later, the blond woman emerged from the house looking content. She got into her car and took off down the street. He started up his car and started tailing her. She zipped through the traffic like a seasoned race car driver. It was hard to keep up with her and maintain a low profile.

She turned abruptly into a side street and he lost her.

Hmmm, he thought. Tricky, tricky lady.

His seasoned mind started to think of other ways to tail Harper's mistress. He could place a GPS tracker on her car, that would eliminate the need to follow her through traffic. Maybe a tracker on Harper's car too?

He made his way back to Harper's place and drove past to see if she was still home. Her Porsche was parked in the driveway.

He parked and waited to see if anything else happened, it looked like the rest of the afternoon was going to be quiet.

Jackson's car pulled into the driveway and he started up the car and drove off. Looks like he was done for the day.
