Chapter 26

Harper stayed in touch with Lenny and caught up with her again at the garage several times. The two women struck up a fast and unlikely friendship, despite their different backgrounds. Lenny had to fight for everything she had in the world, while Harper had skated through life with a silver spoon in her mouth, her parents providing for her until she married Jackson. The unlikely pair bonded while chatting out the back of the workshop over beers.

When the other mechanics joined them occasionally, Harper got to know the thin blonde a little bit, but it was hard to talk when there were so many people always around. Most of the time it was just her and Lenny, talking deep into the night about their experiences growing up, Harper's marriage, break up with Brooklyn and what was happening in Lenny's life - her thoughts, dreams and potential suitors.

"So tell me," Harper questioned Lenny shyly. "Tell me more about the girl with the long blonde hair."

"Aw chica!" Lenny exclaimed excitedly. "Do you mean Cameron? Don't tell me that you have your eye on someone new!"

Harper smiled embarrassed. "Well, maybe," She replied timidly. "I just think she's cute."

Lenny beamed a massive smile and clapped her hands enthusiastically. "I get to play matchmaker! How exciting."

Harper laughed and revelled in her friend's exuberance. She slapped her gently on the shoulder.

"No matchmaking cheeky!" She retorted. "I was just curious."

Lenny giggled and took a swig of her beer. "Ok chica. No matchmaking." She winked cheekily at Harper.

Rafael walked in and beamed when he saw Harper sitting with Lenny. He joined the two giggling women on the couch with a fresh beer.

"Hola Harper." He said, cracking the top off the beer. "¿Cómo estás?"

Harper furrowed her brow briefly as she tried to remember how to answer. "Bien gracias." She replied slowly.

"Bueno!" Rafael exclaimed with a smile, raising his bottle to her. "We'll get you speaking spanish in no time."

Harper laughed. "Slowly," She replied. "I'll get it eventually."

Rafael leaned in. "So tell me Harper," He said, with a slight red flush across his olive skinned cheeks. "How's your amigo Sebastian doing?"

Lenny and Harper looked at each with and playfully chorused "Ooohhhh!" with cheeky smiles on their faces. Rafael ducked his head and chuckled.

"He's good." Harper replied playfully. "You should send him a message or give him a call."

"You think so?" Rafael asked anxiously.

Harper patted him on the arm. "Yes. Definitely."

Rafael nodded, trying to re-establish his tough guy persona. "I might just do that then." He replied nonchalantly, taking a sip of his beer.

Harper and Lenny giggled together.

"I'm so happy that he met Sebastian." Lenny whispered to Harper. "I've never seen him so gaga over a guy before."

"Sebby is kinda the same." Harper confided. "But I think each of them are waiting for the other to make the first move."

Lenny nodded. "Maybe we can give them a gentle push together?"

Harper laughed. "You so want to play matchmaker, don't you?"

Lenny grinned mischievously. "What can I say chica? I like seeing people happy."

Sebastian was relaxing on his roof garden, with a cigarette and a glass of Grey Goose, thinking about his day at work. His thoughts strayed to Rafael. A smile played on his lips as he thought of the brawny mechanic. He was very much attracted to the softly spoken hulk of a man. He was pleasantly surprised after talking with him, expecting a brash, harshly spoken, uneducated man after all, Rafael ran a garage and was surrounded by a lower class of people. Instead Sebastian found that he was down to earth, gentle, caring and educated. He took a drag on his cigarette slowly, thinking about how they had connected so deeply. Part of him was a little hesitant, not knowing what Rafael was after, but the other part of him wanted to throw caution to the wind and just jump in with both feet.

Well, He thought cynically. Rafael has my number. Let's leave the ball in his court for now.

He took another sip of his drink and shot off a message to Harper, knowing that she was hanging out with her new friend Lenny. While he was happy that she found a new friend, he still missed her when she wasn't around.

Sebastian: How's your night going Har-Bear?

Harper: Really good Sebby. I'll be home soon. xx

Sebastian smiled. It was good that Harper was getting out and meeting new people. It would do her good to get out of her comfort zone once in a while.

Sebastian: Hoo-kay my darling! I'll see you when you get home.

Sebastian tapped his long fingers on the glass table pensively and picked up his phone.

Screw it! He thought impulsively. Let's take a chance and see how it goes.

Sebastian: Hey Rafael. Great meeting you the other night :) Are you free to catch up for drinks this week?

He placed his phone on the table and breathed out. Usually he was in control and always knew how to take charge, but this time felt different. He felt out of his element.

Harper watched as Rafael took his phone out of his pocket and smiled as he read the screen. She nudged Lenny.

"Look." She whispered. "I think Sebby messaged Raf." Lenny's eyes lit up and she scrambled over to her brother.

"Whose messaging you hermano?" She demanded, trying to lean over his shoulder and read the message.

Rafael tried to tilt the phone so she couldn't read the screen.

"No one hermana." He replied, trying to finish reading the message surreptitiously. Lenny wasn't going to take no for an answer. She vied to read the message over his shoulder and as Rafael tried to block her with his arm, she called in for reinforcements.

"Harper!" She called out. "Come and help me see what's going on chica."

Harper came over, unsure of how she was supposed to be helping.

"Jump on this side of Raf and try see whose texting him!" Lenny instructed, pointing to the other side of Rafael.

Harper tried her best to see Rafael's phone, but couldn't see the screen. The two women piled on top of Rafael as he struggled to answer the message. He accidentally opened the camera and took an unintentional photo of the him with the women piled on top of him and sent it to Sebastian.

"Mierda!" He cursed, playfully irritated. "Por favor chicas! Let me answer the message."

"Not until we find out who it is!" Lenny exclaimed with a smile on her face, trying her best to climb the bulk that was her brother. Harper started laughing. It was such a different scene here. It felt like she'd never really experienced such family closeness. It was light hearted and joyful.

She pulled Lenny off Rafael. "Let him answer the message and see if we can bribe him into telling us who it was with a beer."

Lenny nodded, her face flushed with the playful struggle, her eyes dancing with delight. "Muy bien chica. We'll let him have his secret for now."

The two women trotted off arm in arm towards the fridge in the corner.

Sebastian's phone buzzed and he picked it up to see the message. He smiled when he saw it was from Rafael. He put down his cigarette and unlocked his phone. His smile widened as he saw the accidental photo of Rafael with Harper and Lenny stacked on top of him. It certainly looked like the three of them were having a good time. He started typing.

Sebastian: LOL! Looks like you're having a good time ;P So I take it it's a si for drinks?

He put his phone down and took another sip of his vodka, letting the smooth silky flavours wash over his tongue. He took another drag on his cigarette and exhaled the smoke slowly as he waited for Rafael to answer. His phone buzzed again quickly.

Rafael: Haha si así es. Drinks sound great. How's Friday?

Sebastian: Friday is perfect. I know just the place.

Sebastian shot through the address of his favourite bar. It was quiet and unpretentious.

Rafael: Bueno hermano! I'll see you there at 8.

Sebastian leant back and smiled. It looked like he had a date with Rafael. He had a happy fluttery feeling in his stomach that he hadn't had in a long time.

Jackson walked out of his office to find Isabella waiting for him next to her desk waiting for him to finish work. She stood quietly at her desk, her hands folded demurely in from of her. The office was quiet as nearly everyone had gone home.

"Mr Thomas?" Her throaty accented voice quavered a little. "May I have a word with you?"

"What is it Isabella?" He asked impatiently, checking his rolex. He was meant to be meeting Ethan and the boys for drinks and he was running late.

Her big blue eyes stared up at him, with a thin veil of tears shimmering across them and her lower lip trembled slightly.

"Well?" He snapped irritably as she stood silently in front of him, looking like she was desperately trying to hold back her tears.

Isabella took a deep breath. "I'm pregnant Mr Thomas." She blurted out, her hands twisted in front of her nervously, fluttering in front of her stomach in protective apprehension. Jackson sagged slightly against her desk in shock. His eyes frantically looked her up and down, trying to see any symptoms of the alleged pregnancy. Her body was still the same curvy perfection that he'd come to appreciate.

His mind raced frantically through the jumble of emotions that he was feeling. Part of him was overjoyed by the news as children were something that Harper had always been hesitant in giving him as she stayed on the pill religiously, making sure that there would be a very slim to no chance of it happening. And you'd need to have sex too. He thought wryly. The other part of him felt outraged that Isabella would be trying to trap him into some kind of permanent union with him by having his child. If Harper was ever to find out, there was no way in hell that she would ever come back to him. His thoughts jumbled together and he wasn't sure how to react.

"Mr Thomas?" Isabella's breathy accented voice broke through the tangle of his thoughts. Her face was paler than usual.

Jackson took a deep breath and went to his go to response as he wasn't sure how to deal with the situation. "How much money do you need?"

Isabella paled even more as she bit down on her bottom lip trying to comprehend the coldness of his response. Her hands fluttered in front of her stomach and cradled it protectively.

"I'm sorry Mr Thomas?" She whispered in disbelief, while a lone tear streaked down her cheek as her head bowed down.

Jackson stood and patted her on the shoulder. "Look," He said matter of factly. "Just let me know how much it's going to cost and I'll take care of it."

His phone buzzed in his pocket. A message from Ethan lit up on his screen.

Ethan: C'mon mate!!! It's getting laaaate Jacky boy!! It's time to get our drink ON!!!

Isabella flinched slightly at Jackson's touch, finally working out what he meant while he shot back a message back to Ethan.

Jackson: Leaving now. See you soon.

When she didn't respond to what he said, he took her silence as an acceptance of his earlier offer.

"It's ok." He said, somewhat consolingly. "It will all work out in the end." He checked his rolex again.

"I have to go. Let me know how much you need." He kissed her frosty cheek, picked up his briefcase and swept out of the office, leaving her standing next to her desk. He walked away feeling slightly better that the problem would be taken care of and no longer a threat to him reuniting with Harper.
