Chapter 23
Later that night after Harper had left for dinner, there was a shy knock on the door. Sebastian opened it and was confronted with a teary eyed red head.
"Is Harper home?" She asked, brushing the tears away from her face with her fingers.
"No darling." He replied taking in her distraught appearance with concern. "Who are you?"
"I'm Mia," She mumbled, her voice choked with tears. "I'm Brooklyn's girlfriend."
"I'm so sorry my darling," He tried to soothe her, while his mind raced thinking about the possible consequences of what could happen now. "I don't know when she'll be home."
Mia nodded, her eyes bright with fresh tears. "Thank you." She mumbled. She turned and walked down the street, her shoulders slumped. Sebastian watched her walk away and wondered what to do next. He texted Harper quickly.
Sebastian: Grrrrrrrrrrrl!!!!!!!!!
Sebastian: You'll never believe who was just here. You're gonna be all shook girlfriend!
Harper: Who? What happened?
Sebastian: Tell you all about it when you get home from dinner.
He wondered how Harper was going to react to the news that Brooklyn's girlfriend had popped by for a visit earlier.
Jackson sat at the table at the restaurant and checked his rolex testily. Harper was running late. He started getting a little impatient as he didn't like to be kept waiting. The waiter placed a glass of Glenmorangie with a napkin underneath it. Jackson grunted his thanks and looked at his rolex again. He took a mouthful of his scotch and cursed Harper. She was going to stand him up and make him look like a fool. He looked out the window, trying to catch a glimpse of her hurrying up the street, but nothing. Jackson looked down at his glass, feeling the anger building up inside of him. He tapped his fingers on the table and reached for his phone.
As he unlocked his phone, about to send Harper a testy message to find out where she was, the door opened and Harper breezed in, her cheeks flushed from rushing. She looked amazing. The vanilla coloured top and tight leather leggings showed off her figure without being too obvious. He always loved the fact that Harper never gave everything away when it came to the way she dressed.
Harper entered the restaurant, knowing that she was running late. A little breathless, she looked around the dining area and saw Jackson rise from the table and wave her over. He was dressed impeccably in a tailored beige cotton Armani jacket, white t-shirt and distressed dark blue jeans, his blonde hair was stylishly slicked back. She took a deep breath. When she looked at him, it reminded her of how it was when they first started dating. He had always been an incredibly chivalrous and attentive man.
Jackson kissed her on the cheek chastely and pulled out the chair for her. He looked at her wrist and saw that she was wearing his gift. He smiled smugly as he settled himself opposite her.
"I'm really glad that you decided to meet with me tonight." Jackson said warmly. "I've missed you so much."
The waiter came over and handed them both menus, giving Harper the chance to dodge what Jackson said.
"The specials tonight are..." The waiter started.
Jackson stopped him with a brief gesture of his hand. "Please bring the lady an old fashioned and I'll have another scotch."
Harper was taken aback. "You remembered the drink that I ordered on our first date."
Jackson smiled charmingly. "Of course. How could I forget?"
Harper smiled and looked at the menu. All the memories of the past were flooding back and it felt like she was seeing them with rose coloured glasses. She started to remember all the good times that they had together in the past and she didn't feel like fighting with Jackson. They had fought enough.
"The squid ink spaghetti looks divine." She said, trying to steer the conversation to a safer place.
Jackson glanced briefly at the menu. "I think that the dry aged rib eye fillet has caught my eye. The red wine sauce sounds amazing."
The waiter arrived with drinks. "May I take your order?"
Jackson nodded. "Can we have a dozen shucked oysters with the limoncello granita for starters, and the lady will have squid ink pasta and I'll have the rib eye steak, rare."
The waiter nodded. "Very good sir." He whisked the menus away from them.
They chatted about mundane everyday things. Harper asked how he was and how work was going for him. Jackson inquired about how she was doing, whether she was enjoying living with Sebastian. Harper tried to keep the conversation light hearted each time when Jackson tried to steer it to more serious matters.
"May I walk you back to your car darling?" Jackson asked chivalrously. Harper nodded and took his proffered arm. In a way, it felt good to fall back into patterns, although Harper knew that it wasn't the best idea to behave with such familiarity, but it was easy and comfortable.
Jackson was very pleased with the way the evening was turning out. Granted Harper had deflected each time when he tried to talk more seriously about them getting back together, he was still very happy. Right now they were walking back to her car and she had her hand tucked in his arm. He imagined that it was only a skip and jump for them getting back together. They arrived at Sebastian's Bentley and Jackson let out a low admiring whistle.
"Nice wheels Harper!" He walked around the magnificent car slowly admiring the brilliant arctic white finish, the blackness of the matrix grill and the 21" black alloy spoke wheels. "Can I sit in it?
Harper shrugged and unlocked the car. "Sure."
Jackson slid behind the wheel and marvelled at the leather and carbon fibre interior. He ran his hand over the wheel. "Bet you're not missing the Porsche driving this beast around."
"Yeh I do actually." Harper sighed sadly. "That car's my baby."
Jackson ignored what she said and slowly got out of the car reluctantly. He stood in front of her as she leaned gently on the front wheel guard.
"I'm really glad that we got this chance to get together tonight." Jackson said smoothly. "I really wanted to show you how good we are together."
Harper looked away from him. "Jack," She started. "You know that it's not going to happen right?"
Jackson ran his knuckles over her cheek and then ran his fingers through her hair gently. "You know you don't mean that."
Harper removed his hand gently. "Yes I do Jack. I meant it when I said that we were over."
She removed the exquisite cuff reluctantly and gave it back to him.
He stared at the bracelet in his hand incredulously. "You're serious, aren't you?"
Harper nodded sadly. "Yes Jack. Tonight was wonderful and I hope that we can stay friends despite all of this. Maybe after time heals our wounds."
"But Harper I miss you." Jackson's face contorted in anguish as he reached for her arm. "I love you."
Harper shrugged and tried to duck away from him. "I'm sorry Jack, I really am."
He caught her and pinned her against the side of the Bentley, holding her close to him. She tried to push away from him, but he held her tightly.
"Harper," He said roughly. "We belong together." He brought his lips down to hers roughly and forcefully. Harper tried to scream but no sound came out. Jackson continued to hold her close and kiss her forcibly. Harper's fists beat against his chest ineffectually. She managed to break free from his unwanted kiss and screamed out.
"Stop it Jackson!"
"No!" He growled back. "You're going to be mine again."
He kissed her forcibly again and ran his hands across her body as Harper struggled in his tight grip trying to break free. A couple passing by approached them. The man was tall, muscular and his head was clean shaven. The female was slightly shorter with long wavy light brown hair that flowed past her shoulder to the middle of her back, with a slight build.
"What's going on here?" The man demanded. Jackson broke away from the kiss and Harper met the man's gaze with tears streaming down her face, her blue eyes imploring him to help her.
"Please..." She pleaded with the couple, her face wet with tears.
"Nothing." Jackson snapped. "My wife and I are just sorting out a disagreement."
"Doesn't look like that to me ese." The man retorted. "How about you let her go?"
Jackson considered the situation. Although he felt confident that he could take on the guy as he was just as tall and muscular but he didn't feel that getting into a fight was the best course of action in winning Harper back.
"Come on chica. Come with me." The brunette approached slowly and reached out for Harper's arm gently. "Vámonos amiga."
Harper managed to disengage herself from Jackson's embrace and stepped over to the side with the brunette, wiping the tears from her face with her hand. The man placed himself in between the two women and Jackson.
"So everything is done now, isn't it ese." He stated calmly, his dark eyes cold and hard.
Jackson assessed the situation. As much as he wanted to persuade Harper to go back to him, he felt that the situation was getting out of hand especially since these two strangers decided to intervene, best to leave it be and try for another day. He turned the bracelet over in his fingers as he decided the best course of action.
"Fine." He replied gruffly. "Harper, darling, I'll talk to you later."
Harper nodded, thankful for the protection of the two strangers. She watched Jackson stride off angrily off into the shadows back to his car.
"Thank you so much." She said. "I don't know what I would have done if you two hadn't come by."
"Da nada chica." The brunette replied.
"Happy to help out." The man replied, keeping an eye on the direction that Jackson had gone in.
"So, are you ok?" The brunette asked. "He didn't hurt you did he?"
"Not really..." Harper stuttered slightly, still reeling from Jackson's attack. "No... Yes, I'm ok. I'm Harper by the way."
"Lenny." The brunette said. "And this is Rafael."
"It's so lovely to meet both of you." Harper said gratefully, shaking both of their hands. "Look, can I buy you guys a drink or something to say thank you?"
Lenny checked her watch. "Not tonight chica, but if you like, you can swing past the garage tomorrow night? Bring some thank you beers?" She held out a card with the address of panel shop.
Harper took the card with a smile. "Thanks. That sounds great."
"Sounds good chica, we'll see you then. Adiós." Lenny smiled, Rafael gave her a wave and they continued on their way.
