Before The Isle
The laws of nature portray animals in two separate classes; Predator and Prey. Before they adapted to society, this allowed a balance between them. But since they have grown more civilized, these labels cause… issue. Many have attempted to bring peace and friendship to this world, but carnivore instincts have made things difficult, for both them, and the herbivores they try so desperately to befriend. Herbivores have grown skittish and very quick to judge, while carnivores have become either scarce or hostile. Obviously, the consumption of meat is outlawed in most of the world, but this does not stop many rich carnivores from purchasing the flesh of those who surround them, some even slapping a price tag on a living, breathing child or infant.
To deal with this, many governments have decided to turn an island, once inhabited by a city that has since fallen to war, into a prison island. The island being just over the size of modern-day France, criminals from over a dozen or so different countries fill up rather quickly. Mostly used by half of Europe, Russia (in Europe), even as far as the U.S.A and Mexico, and as far south as Australia, formerly being used by Canada and parts of Asia. Australia is the only country below Ecuador that uses the isle, and only the northernmost regions, as with the Easternmost side of the U.S. Originally intended only for carnivores who have lost control and turned feral, the pathetic chunk of rock being named as The Isle of The Damned. The reason for the pattern of countries who use the isle is unknown, and with many of them being nitrous rivals, it’s a bit odd.
The isle now serves its purpose as not just for carnivores, but for any who may cause a disruption. Criminals, drug dealers and their druggies are sent there so the law no longer has to deal with them. They are left to the elements of the tropics and each other. Escape was nearly impossible, prisoners first having to get to the water’s edge without being murdered or kidnapped or even… eaten by other prisoners, then get past the heavily guarded wall, then somehow get through the 600 miles of the Atlantic back to the closest mainland, and then get past the guards on the mainland.
The laws and punishments differ from country to country, and even city to city, but the four comon things that every county who utilizes the isle being murder - to any degree - , arson, rape, or trafficing. The Isle of The Damned is only used by 12 of the countries in the world, but not all that have immediate access to water. Massive countries like Russia or the United States transport prisoners via train or plane to the docks once every few months or so, then load them on massive ships. Unless they are within driving distance to the water, then they use smaller boats to bring them to the isle. Countries that don't have access to the water at all or are very far away land the planes in countries that are closer, for example Russia to Portugal, and Australia and the U.S to Britain, Even if that country does not use the isle, such as Austria to Egypt.
Unfortunately, many corrupted and biased individuals have been placed in slots where they decide who is sent to prison, who is set free, and who is sent to the isle. Judges with biased and discriminatory outlooks send simple thieves and tax evaders to the isle if they can, not always because they are carnivores, but simply because they are a different type of herbivore. The problem arises with the fact that the judge’s say is final, and no one can override it. However, considering many world leaders have similar outlooks, these judges are allowed to remain in charge of the decisions regarding criminals, and the fact that they can decide someone’s fate has not been overruled. The second someone is proven guilty, it’s up to the judge to decide where they go. The jury only decides when someone is guilty or innocent, and in many countries around the world, you are guilty until proven innocent.
