Chapter 3| The Crystal

Kylo knelt inside the Resistance base on Crait. He bent down to pick up a golden object on the floor, one unlike the one he had picked up in Snoke's throne room. It held no power, yet called to him just as strongly. Like the ring he felt a presence as he touched it. But it was not a cold dark presence, it was warm and full of light. He held it in his hands. As he looked down at his father's dice, a tear poured down his cheek.

He looked up to see Rey standing there looking down at him. Her expression was blank, as if she was wearing a mask. There was no hate in her eyes, but he saw no compassion either. He looked at her with pleading eyes, begging her, pleading with her not to leave him. But she closed the door of the Millennium, and ended their connection.

He looked back down at the dice in his hand and rubbed them with his thumb. Slowly they faded, until they were gone.

Moments later, Hux came into the room. Kylo quickly stood, and turned to face him. His face which moments ago had been filled with pain, sadness and tears was now emotionless, an invisible mask covered what was beneath his skin "The Resistance is gone," he told him. "Prepare what ships we have left to leave."

"Yes, sir," said Hux, knowing that now was not a good time to disagree with him.

Later, Kylo Ren entered his room and placed the ring on top of a small table. Then he laid down in his bed, and tried to sleep. But even though Snoke was gone, every time he drifted into sleep, his mind was filled with terrifying images. As if he were still being tortured by Snoke.

After a few moments, he opened his eyes. He longed for sleep, but also feared it.

"Kylo..." he heard a voice whisper.

He sat up with a start. "Who's there?" he asked. But as he looked around the room, he found that he was alone.

Meanwhile, the Resistance had jumped into hyper space to escape the First Order. But they could not run forever, they needed to find a place to rebuild the Resistance. Or at least a place they would be safe from the First Order until they could.

"Where should we go, General?" asked Poe.

"To Naboo. We will be safe there, for now."

The next day, the Resistance arrived on Naboo.

They were greeted by the young queen, Natalia along with her guards and handmaidens.

"I am Leia Organa Solo, I have come with the last of the Resistance in our hour of greatest need. Will you help us?"

Queen Natalia bowed slightly in respect for the last princess of Alderaan, the daughter of Naboo's former queen, Amadala. "Yes of course, your highness."

Leia smiled warmly at her. "Thank you, your majesty."

"If you are all that is left, then you will need more fighters at your side if the First Order is to be defeated. We must have a council meeting right away, hopefully my people will agree to fight with the Resistance."

Leia nodded.

"Bring all of your leaders," the queen looked at the group of fighters who surrounded the royal general. "The rest of you are free to roam the palace as you choose. Rest, have something to eat, enjoy a moment of peace in our meadows and by our lakes, I know that you have earned it."

Rey was relieved that she didn't have to attend the meeting, she didn't think she could stand listening to the nobility of Naboo and the Resistance leaders talking about politics for hours.

As the Resistance leaders left to join the council, Rey slipped away. This planet was beautiful, the most beautiful planet she had ever seen, and she wanted to explore it for a while.

As Rey walked a long the edge of the lake, venturing farther from the palace towards the forest nearby, she felt a strange pull. A tug from the Force that guided her. She followed it as it lead her to a cave on the lake's shore.

She looked into the cave, it was dark but she was unafraid. This was not a darkness that was gripped by evil, she couldn't feel the Dark Side residing within as she had with the cave on Ahch-To, this was a natural darkness.

She stepped inside, following the feeling that guided her.

Finally, she came to a room within the cave. She felt led to venture inside, and so she did. Wandering to the back of the room, a small object on the floor called her, and so she bent down to pick it up. She looked down at it, it was a crystal, a very special crystal. It was a kyber crystal, the kind of crystal that powered lightsabers.

As she touched it, it began to glow a bright, beautiful blue, and a vision appeared before her. It was so lifelike that it seemed as if she were really there.

She saw Kylo Ren standing in an ash covered land, fiery red lava flowed like a river beside him. As she looked into his eyes, she saw that all the light that had once been in them was gone and only darkness remained. His eyes were yellow and burned like the molten lava that surrounded him, instead of the warm, pain filled brown eyes she was used to.

She turned away from him, unable able to bear the image any longer. The wounds in her heart were deep, she thought that he cared about her, but all he cared about was power and ruling the galaxy. He only wanted her to help him rule, but why would he? He had said so himself...she was nothing.

Still it hurt her to see him this way, she knew that it was Kylo Ren that had spoken those words, not Ben. Ben Solo was the one who had told her that she was not alone, it was Ben who had been there for her when no one else was, Ben who had taken her hand when she needed comfort. But in this vision none of Ben remained, only the dark knight stood there and it broke her heart.

The vision changed and she saw a fortress, a dark ruin. From the shadows a figure emerged. The figure was clad in all white, and glowed softly. She couldn't see who it was, they were too far away to make out clearly.

The image confused her, who was this figure and why was she seeing it? Why was the Force showing her this?

The vision changed and she saw herself standing on a balcony much like the ones on Naboo, and she was dressed in a simple but elegant blue dress. She stood with another and as the vision focused on the figure next to her, she saw that it was Ben. He reached out and gently caressed her face.

Rey gasped and released the crystal letting it fall to the sand beneath her feet. She had felt the gentle touch as if he were really there. She reached up rubbing her cheek to erase the feeling, she was still angry with him. She went to save him, but he wouldn't come with her, she felt like he had pushed her away.

She had seen a vision much like this one as they touched hands, him and her together. She had seen him as Ben again, on the Light Side of the Force, wielding his grandfather's lightsaber. But those visions hadn't came true, so why would this one? Was the Force simply trying to torture her with what could have been?

Luke's words echoed in her mind: "This is not going to go the way you think."

She looked down at the crystal on the floor of the cave, she didn't want to touch it ever again, not if it meant she would see more images of her deepest hearts desire that was nothing more than a dream, and visions of the nightmares that were her stark reality.

But the crystal had called to her, and there was no question she would need a new lightsaber and soon.

Hesitantly, she reached down and picked it up.
