          The ice inside of Lily Lark is sharper than a knife and brittler than bone. She holds a winter in her chest and a warmth in her veins that she cannot shake. Her skin is a patchwork of iron armour and flesh-coloured petals and she has a tongue like gunmetal bullets with an attitude to match – a glass house charading as a diamond fortress. Lily Lark is an enigma and Clark Kent cannot figure her out.

          Because Clark Kent does not exist in paradoxes or juxtapositions: his smile glows and his touch thaws and his laugh feels like the summer sun. He carries hope in his bones and courage in his lungs, his every breath extinguishes fear and doubt; he is a hero and he is strong and kind and good.

          It must be some cosmic coincidence that ends with such opposites crossing paths because Clark has spent his entire life feeling fated, feeling destiny resting on his shoulders, and Lily is not one for destiny. She charts her own course amongst the heavens, trampling stars underfoot in spite of her own fragility. With all her oxymoronic vices and virtues, she threatens to knock all he knows out of kilter and Clark — who is made of steel and ichor and has spent his whole life trying not to collapse in on himself like a supernova — finds himself burning up in her gravity like a comet.

          But for all his insight and awe, he falls short in seeing the irony of his admiration. That Lily Lark, for all her walls and guards and facades, has her entire world thrown off its axis by Clark Kent.

          Clark Kent, who smiles like he can hold stars between his teeth.

          Clark Kent, the mild mannered farm boy who harbours more than a heart of gold locked away inside his chest.

          Clark Kent, who looks at Lily — since the first moment he saw her in the frozen wreck of a spaceship — like she is more than just her misplaced viciousness and calamitous spite. A look that disarms every frostbitten bullet, softens every sharp-eyed glare, wraps every barb-wired comment in wool.

          Lily knows better. She does.

          She is not one for fairytales and soft epilogues, but there's something about the boy scout from Smallville. Something that feels like every wish she made on a shooting star as a child, every dream she let go of. And she doesn't believe in fate. But she is a glass house and she is far too prone to throwing stones at the universe. (How long until it throws one back?)

          Lily Lark meets Clark Kent.

💥 in bloom featured a version of clark and lily that have more of a rocky run than most do; they don't really have the childhood/teen dynamic where they grew together so they meet as pretty static people who kinda know who they are but also kinda get moved and changed and influenced by each other. a lot of my "basic" dc original lore (aka the foundation shit i seem to use in all my dc fics) is mostly the same and i'll explain/establish it throughout the story. it mostly involves previous ties between backstories and maya black just being. everywhere.
