14. The Cigarette
You stood under the summer sky,
A cigarette in your right hand,
The other in your pocket-
You went for the lighter,
Let it simmer its flame,
I watched the smoke play between your parted lips,
But I stayed.
You told me that you liked it,
I could see that you did,
You went through the whole packet,
Faster than you could breathe.
And one by one its ashes gathered
Into a heap in the bay of the river,
Its dust blew away with the hot summer sand weathered.
It suffocated me but I didn't complain,
Because you like it and I liked you,
I sacrificed for your happiness then,
But later did I understand you-
You smoked me like a cigarette,
Until I was nothing but ashes,
I got pressed between your feet and sand,
Until my fire stopped fighting battles._________________________________________
