Where in the world was Sam Munson's head these days?
. . . That is a hopeless inquiry.

AUGUST

Sam still doesn't know the answer himself. After his Soviet infested summer, death persevered in the form of his mother. His dead, gone, and soon-to-be buried mother. Without a word the Munsons vanished for one week in the middle of August. In Chicago's mournful downpour, its tiresome strangers, their insincere condolences, left Sam suffocating throughout his pallbearer duties. When he returned to Hawkins' all the monstrosities that lied beneath the small town were almost forgotten.

He didn't know how to grieve a mother he hardly knew. Maybe that's the reason her decaying corpse is haunting him. At every corner, under every street lamp, behind every door she's there. Sam descends into insanity at the idea the corporal corpse of his mother is real. He abandons friends and family for the portentous comfort of his mother's arms to become a ghost, like his mother, in the penumbra over Hawkins.

OCTOBER

Throughout the abysmal plight of his mother Sam grappled with reality. A pernicious shift at Hawk Theater solidified Sam's isolation. He stood outside on the top of ladder, near the fore of the theater's marquee, and stole a single glance at the carcass of his mother in the street. One moment Sam has plastic letters in his hands and the next he's lying on the gravel with a fractured humerus.

Several feet away Steve called for help. Steve is in the ambulance. Steve is consoling him. Steve is standing in the waiting room. Steve being there.

Saving him.

Again.

And again!

He saved Sam from the Demogorgon, pushed Sam out of the way from a hoard of Demodogs, and volunteered for the first punch from a Soviet fist. Steve was always there saving Sam. Steve confronts him in the hospital and Sam knows he was trying to help. Trying to save him. Except Sam couldn't face him. The boy that keeps saving him. The boy he owes his life to. The boy he wished that knew when to leave well enough alone.

Sam has a lot of regrets about that day.

NOVEMBER

Sam sought out a solution. A band-aid at 2121 Holland Road. Despite Sam sensing his mother lingering in the shadows he could finally breathe again. What was suppose to be a day turned into weeks to months of knocking on Reefer Rick's door. Everything falls apart when Sam's brother is exposed to his nasty habit.

MARCH

Nowadays Sam likes to think he's reformed thanks to his counselor and his brother's control on his sobriety. Spring break was really suppose to be Sam's redemption. He was going to talk to Steve. He was going to tell him everything. He was going to apologize. Instead he discovers the mutilated body of Chrissy Cunningham in his trailer.

Soon Officers Powell and Callahan arrive pointing fingers. The final suspects? Eddie and Sam Munson. Even though Nancy Wheeler vouches for Sam, he's still under the watchful eye of Hawkins Police and a target for Jason Carver. Something sinister is at work and its unceasing answer can be found buried beneath the soil of a town Sam called home.

(And he knows he can't be a metaphorical ghost alongside his mother forever.

He knows.
He knows. That it's time Samuel.

🕰️ finally! ummm first off! a super special thank you to farrah for the message on my mb...it got me thinking thoughts. also major inspiration struck with all the promo for season five...especially the joe and maya picture.

🕰️ OKAY SO i might make this more of a sam and eddie centric fic 'cause ive always been super obsessed with the munson/winchester brothers parallels...like C'MON. it's so good. but alas the og premise of this is a steve + sam one or stam (maybe STEM??? science, technology, engineering, mathematics 😨) anyways for those of you who weren't in this first waves of this...god are you in for a ride. anyways im going to ramble on about sam's character a bit cause i love him so much. sammy is like a mixture of different characters but in terms of 80s films he's neil perry, cameron frye, and veronica sawyer. it's kind of an odd mix, but i like to think of his character as snarky, self-debating, and very empathetic. truly he is trying his best at all times...cue in taylor swift's this is me trying. also just wanted to mention a few movies that inspired the whole sam munson plotines within stranger things to name a few an american werewolf in london, heathers, and the empire strikes back. there's more but that's all i can remember at the top of my head???

🕰️ another thing i wanted to causally mention...is that he is childhood friends with jonathan! i lowkey do like sam and jonathan together (samathan!) 'cause im a sucker for childhood friends to lovers. THERE is so much lore i could go on and on about here but it's really just me spoiling everything. stam is priority and i love them but they are a tangled mess that continues to grow and grow and grow each season...season two is their superior one imo. SPEAKING MY TRUTH NOW! sam and steve are soooo jegulus coded. they just...understand one another so well? like sam never underestimates steve ??? thinks the world of him and steve just gets caught his orbit UMM sunshine/midnight rain parallels oh god...ALSO ive been super into noah kahan and am going to causally mention that come over is definitely a stam song. thank you if you read all this...
