#20
1am, Friday morning.
I was just waking up, and getting my maths note ready to start reading when my phone beeped, a message came in.
I picked my phone and went down stairs to the dining room. Pulling out a chair, I sat down on it and opened the message. It was from an unknown number and it read Hi.
Replying with 'hello', I sat down and was about to switch off my data when an unknown girl or guy texted me and said 'So...what's up?'
What kind of person would be asking me that kind of question by 1am in the morning for heaven's sake?
Replying with 'the clouds' because the clouds were up. I once again attempted to switch off my connection and any form of distraction but it seemed like unknown girl or guy was attempting fastest fingers.
They sent a smiling emoji and lol, making me wonder what was making him laugh in the first place and then, laughing out loud. Without replying, I switched off my data and turned to 'reading' maths.
By some minutes after two, I was already getting tired of reading maths and I picked up my phone, maybe I could use it and then later go back to studying.
Unfortunately, aunty Anna wasn't in the right place of mind physically and mentally to even try to teach me a little maths and I had to babysit and also do her house chores for her before I left for my own house.
Unlocking my phone, I tried not to remember that I actually would not have an annoying little thief that would steal my water when we reached school in like 7 to 8 hours from now, or yell in my ear when we were taking the hymn in school.
She would be at home, under going medications and also taking injections and drugs to get better.
Even if she dreaded syringes, she had to take them in order to get better, and not be admitted into aunty Busayo's hospital which would be far more worse than the dreaded syringes.
Opening the message of unknown girl-guy which read: 'so... you were at Anna's place today', I struggled to close my mouth. Anna's house, today?? Who was this and how did he or she even know I was there?
Did I have a stalker? I turned around in my chair, staring at all the windows I could lay my eyes on.
My eyes darted from window to window and I swallowed hard. How did he or she know? Grabbing my phone, I quickly typed a 'sorry who are you?' and tapped an impatient leg on the ground, my eyes still alert.
I stood up to switch on the fan, I was getting sweaty and I didn't know why. Well... little things scared me and the thought of someone following me was not really going down well with me.
Standing up, I went into the kitchen, my stomach growled. I needed food. The kitchen was practically clear of any food, the gas cooker empty and free of any pot that could even hold the least food.
Pulling open the cupboard, I pulled out two noodles. Even if I was lazy to cook, my stomach wasn't helping in any way so I had to either cook or starve.
Putting water on fire, I went for my phone and no message had entered. I saw Anna online and I had to text her. What was a sick child like her doing awake by past 2 in the morning? She said she couldn't sleep and that she had been trying to sleep.
Anna as boring and sick as she was still managed to get my attention and I was engrossed in what we were saying that I had totally forgotten that I had put something on fire.
Immediately I remembered, I more like flew to the kitchen, my fingers finding their way to my mouth like second nature, as I put off the gas cooker.
A typical yoruba mother like mine could wake up from sleep if she perceived the slightest smell of something burning or food cooking from her kitchen and I more like awaited the steps of my mum.
After waiting for like 2 minutes, mum didn't show up and I refilled the almost dry stainless pot with water. I released my already crying fingers from my mouth and heard my phone beep.
Looking outside the kitchen to the table where I kept the phone, I had to pause and also look at the water I was boiling. Could it get boiled before I came back?
My parents had thoroughly warned everyone child they had given birth to to never use their cell phones in the kitchen let alone even bringing it into the kitchen.
And right now I was so tempted to go against that order. I could just stay at the door of the kitchen and type a reply to whoever sent the message and I'll be back, cooking my noodles in peace.
On a second thought, I paused. The person that texted had to wait... so as fast as lightening, I made my noodles trying to shut out the faint beeping sounds coming from my phone.
When at last I was done with the food I was cooking, I walked to the table, trying to hold my food in one hand and also trying to switch off the fan with the other. I couldn't eat a cold noodle and I knew that my phone would probably take all the time I wanted to use to eat.
I didn't sit before grabbing my phone from the wooden surface and unlocking it. 21 messages from two chats greeted my line of vision and I practically rolled my eyes.
Like I expected, my cousin gained the upper hand in the message spamming and then unknown girl/guy too. It was more like the stranger texting me was the student and Anna was the tutor. Replying to her with an 'I was cooking', I was eager to see what my supposed stalker was saying.
My eyes practically popped out of my head when I saw the message.
So... you came to Anna's to teach you maths today uh? ... looking at you everyday, someone will think you were smart.
Hold on... hold on... what? Like... wait what??
I zeroed my thoughts on the fact that he/she was a monitoring person on my life and focused on the fact the he/she called me not smart.
Letting my fingers on my keypad, I asked if he was girl or boy and almost killed myself when he answered. The reply just proved his point more and made me look like a dummy.
I could easily have checked his d.p or profile and would have seen his name there but I was too eager to even think straight about my actions.
I looked at his d.p and it read... 'Son of the king.' The background was a plain bright yellowish colour with a crown on top of the letter K and it was honestly beautiful. His name read D.
Just 'D.'
"Ahan..." I voiced out my thoughts before realising that I had not appeased my taste buds with my very sweet noodles. Slowing circling my stainless fork around the long strands of food, an act that Iyanu, Anna's brother loved, I shoved it into my mouth and shut my eyes, enjoying every spice the food had to offer.
My phone vibrated when I was just taking my 3rd fork and I picked it up once again. Anna was asking what I was eating and 'D' was Smhing at me.
As I swallowed my food, I just stared at my phone for a couple of seconds and then at my food. Deciding which to attend to first. My hand had curled round my phone, when my stomach growled. Breathing out, I let go of my phone and picked up my fork once again, enjoying my now warm food.
The guy texting me which I now knew as D sent me a cliche 'I'm watching you always, keep that in mind.' And for some reason or the other that was unknown to me, I smiled.
I replied with an okay, putting the last fork of noodles in my mouth and telling Anna goodbye. I had to go back to reading if I didn't want the wrath of Mrs Eunice Williams, aka my mum by 5:30 am when I was meant to wake up.
I needed to finish up my reading on time so as to catch some sleep before 6am when the bus would come to pick me up and not waking up early and be prepared warranted my mum's wrath and probably very painful ábará(slap) which was more than enough to send you flying into tomorrow and back.
By 3:12, my eyes were closing and I was dozing. I closed my book and dragged my tired body upstairs to my room, forgetting my phone. As my body hit my bed, I drifted off to my short but very much needed sleep.
