Bad luck

Another two months passed by like a breeze and everything was good until Elara fell very ill one morning. Not ill as in morning sickness, this wasn't normal. At 13 weeks into her pregnancy she was cramping. She immediately knew something was wrong when she couldn't get out of bed after bleeding earlier. Zarkon was more nervous than ever. Ulaz was called in and was scanning Elara's lower abdomen. By now there should have been a heartbeat, there was a heartbeat in an earlier scan and now there was dead silence.

"Ulaz, why is there no heartbeat?" Zarkon asked. He was on edge as he held her hand.

"It hurts me to tell you this. Her uterus is completely empty." Ulaz said sadly.

"What?" She mumbled.

"You had a miscarriage. Most likely due to the fact that you have history of not matching another child's blood type. Your body had a reaction to the baby's blood." Ulaz explained.

It happened again. A second miscarriage. This is the kind of pain they never wanted to feel again. It happened to their very first child and now it happened to what should have been the sixth child.

"Thank you Ulaz, we know there wasn't much that could've been done." Zarkon said sadly.

Ulaz nodded sadly and left the room after packing up all his tools to return them to the medbay.

"Well it happened again. My body hates the fact I just wanted to be a mother again and clearly it rebelled ag the thought of my happiness." Elara said, fixing her shirt.

The thing that hurt the most was that she and Zarkon discovered her tiny bump just yesterday and that Koltor understood that his mother was expecting another baby. Poor Elara felt like a complete and utter failure for miscarrying again. Neither miscarriages were her fault but she that this second one was.

"Elara don't blame yourself. It's not your fault. Nobody is at fault. You just need some rest." Zarkon said.

"I can't help it Zarkon. I'm the one who carries the child and I feel like I should have been more careful." She said, wiping away the tears that had welled up in her eyes when Ulaz gave them the bad news.

"You want to cry don't you?" Zarkon asked, already knowing the answer.

"Yeah..." She whimpered. Once he hugged her, she completely broke down.

After an hour of endless sobbing, she ended up crying herself to sleep. Life was so unnecessarily cruel. Zarkon would keep asking himself what they did to deserve this pain again. They didn't know if they wanted another child at all, another miscarriage would practically destroy them both emotionally. If not, it would emotionally butcher them.
