Chapter 25
I woke up to Maddie nudging my shoulder. "Hi Maddie, time to get up already?"
Maddie nodded. So we took down camp and went to get a taxi. Maddie wasn't pleased to be a purse, but the taxi driver didn't really seem to notice. If he did hear all the fussing, he didn't care. I told Nat my dream.
"Well it's almost dark, so we can climb the Sphinx I guess." Nat said.
"Yeah, we can't use the invisibility spell can we?" I asked.
"No, you have to concentrate on it, and we don't want to fall."
"Okay, so we'll have to hope that they don't see or find us."
"Yes, hope lots!" We got to the Sphinx pretty quickly and ran to it as fast as possible.
"Maddie, can you help us up?" I asked. Maddie nodded so we hopped on her back. We went up. I figured it'd be easier if Maddie just carried us up, I know we could've used magic, but I had a feeling we'd need it. After about 10 minutes of going up, we got to the head of the Sphinx. Apparently Nat and I were really heavy. "Good job, Maddie!" I patted Maddie on the head, but she was already sleeping.
"Candace, what do we do?" Nat asked.
"Look for B and B to make sure we don't see them." You can probably guess who B and B were.
Luckily we didn't see them, but they could've been standing behind a pyramid, or even right under us. "Now, we start digging."
"We what?" Nat asked shocked. "Candace, this isn't a sandbox! This has been here for thousands of years! It's super hard, we can't dig it! It's a national monument. What would we dig with? Our footprints didn't even make dents or marks! There's no way we could dig!"
"True," I said, "The thing's right around here. I can feel it!"
"So can I. Wait, Candace there it is!" Nat pointed to the nose of the Sphinx. On it was something that seemed to be glowing.
"How can people not notice that?" I wondered out loud.
"I don't know! Maybe to only magicians it glows."
"Probably, we seem to have really good sight and hearing! So, who's going to get the thing?" I asked.
"I will." Nat volunteered. I didn't object, because I didn't really feel like visiting the hospital again. Nat slowly walked over to the nose. She wobbled a couple of times, and I was sure she was going to fall. Thankfully she didn't. She finally made it over to the object, grabbed it, and started walking back.
About twenty minutes after she had left, she came back. "What is it?" I asked.
"It looks like a mini crown."
"It's like the Pharaoh head, try opening it." Sure enough it clicked open. Just then the wind blew and it seemed to get colder.
"Close the crown and put it into your pocket!" I said. Something dark was coming, something dark and evil.
"Hello Candace Brown and Natalie Genstine. I told you we'd meet again!"
I recognized the voice immediately. "What do you want Romo?" I demanded.
"You dead, what else?" He asked.
"I don't know, maybe you could apologize or join our side." Nat said sarcastically.
"That'll never happen. Since Brooke can't seem to find you, I have to do the work. My masters demand that I use your souls to rise up our allies."
"The ghosts right?"
"Yes, no I can't let you continue on this mission, can I?"
"Well you could." I said, trying to get inside his head. I wasn't worried that we'd get hurt, but it would be easier for me if we didn't have to fight.
"I couldn't...ever. You are wanted dead, really dead. In the darkest places of the world of the dead."
"Weren't you almost killed last time?"
"No, I had to disappear so I wouldn't be killed.
"Right." I said. "I forgot you were a coward. I'm surprised you actually came to fight us yourself this time. Instead of putting all the monsters in front of you."
He seemed to totally ignore me. "You have a couple of options. You can stay alive and then we take another magician's soul to raise the army of the dead."
"Here are your options, you die, you die, or you die trying to kill us."
"No I will not die." He snarled. "You could also join our side, I'm pretty sure you saw the presentation right?"
"Yes, one of the most boring, and definitely the funniest presentations ever."
"He is pretty convincing, but you still have some options. Number one, as you know join our side and fight with us. Number two is to fight me and die, and number three is willingly die to save your brother's life."
"How about my options I gave you? Remember, somehow they all included die. What about the option fight you and you die?"
"That wasn't one of my options."
"Well it is now!" I grabbed my wand from my pocket, and prepared to fight. "Nat you ready?" I asked.
"You bet!"
"Nani." Protect, I said. I pointed my wand at Maddie, who was still asleep, and she seemed to be surrounded by magic. "Aca." Back, I yelled. Unfortunately Romo was way faster than Mohammad. He put up a shield and Nat and I did the same.
"You are stronger, but you can't do this can you?" He held his shield with the hand that he didn't have his wand in. (The shield wasn't an actual metal shield, but it was a magical barrier more or less. Like shield balls were a magical ball around you.) Then with his other hand he tried to blast us. We had our shields up so it didn't work, but I felt mine weaken.
I tried doing the same and out of the corner of my eye, I saw Nat doing it too. It was hard, but I did it. Nat had succeeded too.
"Sancana." Blast, I said. I felt the power in my wand surge and suddenly it left my wand and hit Romo. His shield stopped the magic, but his magical barrier left him. That's when Nat struck, she blasted him and he flew back. He almost fell off, but unfortunately stayed on. He quickly regained his shield and posture, but he did seem somewhat weakened.
"So are you going to run away again?" I asked.
"I was sent to kill you, and was not given permission to return alive without you." He said through his teeth.
"Wow, I'm surprised." Nat said.
"Why do you-"
"AMNA!" Destroy, I yelled. I saw an opportunity and I took it. He was blown backwards from a mini explosion. He blew right off the Sphinx and fell. "Good job Nat, nice distracting."
"Candace, he'll be back. You know that right?"
"Yes I do, but good job anyways. I looked back to see Maddie still sleeping. That's when I was caught off guard and tackled. In the last few days, I sure felt like a star football tight end or something. I had been tackled by so many ghosts, and now my good buddy (NOT) Romo.
"Lesson before you die, never loose focus on the enemy."
"Thanks, I think I knew that." I sup over and was on top of him. "Lesson before you die, always look out for a friend." I mocked his voice.
"Thanks, I think I knew that." He said in a high-pitched, squeaky voice.
"No you didn't. Now you want a quick death?"
"No, I'm not going to die." He spun us around and Ii was suddenly aware of how close I was to the edge. If I wanted to get on top, I'd probably fall, unless I went the other way which was harder. If I didn't get on top, I'd probably die.
So I turned and down we went. "Ame." Up. I would've used the catch spell, but then Romo would've been caught too.
Unfortunately Romo had a few tricks too. He did the same thing as me.
"Don't you know your own magic?" I asked.
"Yes, more than you'd ever know."
"Lamachob." Move, I said. Romo went flying in the other direction. "Giggaly Goo Na." Catch, I remembered that was one of my first spells. I was caught instantly. "Nacamaca." Lift, that was also one of my first spells. I remembered using those spells the night Nat was in a box. It felt like forever ago. Many years, if not ages ago. I went up and soon was with Nat and Maddie. Maddie was awake now, but she looked terrified. "We have to go. I escaped him, but he's coming."
"Candace, I don't want to fight him either, but I hope you know we have to kill him and fight him. Otherwise he'll just keep following us."
"I know. Shields up." I said. "He's coming." I sensed him coming. Our shields went up, and Maddie went into a ball again so that way if she got to tired, she'd be okay and safe.
Then Romo attacked. He shot at Hat and her shield stopped it, but disappeared. I jumped in front of her so Romo couldn't shoot her. She'd have time to put up another shield. He shot at me, it was extremely powerful, but my shield held. I knew I'd have to multitask.
I moved my shield to my non-wand hand. "Amna." Destroy.
His shield went out. I wanted to do the kill spell, but I didn't want to kill myself in the process. "Sagan." Zap a bolt of lightning came down from the sky and hit Romo. I walked over to him.
"Just kill me now." He wheezed.
"You are lucky I'm nice. I'll get it done quickly."
"Before you do, Candace Brown, you must know that you are very powerful. Watch your powers."
"Thanks Romo. Thanks so much." I said sarcastically. "Uka." End, I said and Romo's life ended.
"Time to go now guys." I said. "Want to jump and then catch ourselves?" Maddie still looked terrified of Romo. "He's dead Maddie." I said.
"Sure sounds fun." Nat agreed. So we jumped off the Sphinx, including Maddie even though she had wings. When we were twenty feet off the ground we said, "Giggaly Goo Na." Catch, and then lowered ourselves to the ground.
"Let's get out of here before B and B see us." We ran towards the road and got a taxi to take us to the closest exit. We were going to figure out where to go and then rest for the night. It was too dangerous at the pyramids. I kind of wanted to dream of Brooke and Brent so I knew what they were up to and where they were.
We went behind some buildings and set up camp. "The crown," I said.
"OH yeah, okay so far we have a crown and Pharaoh head. We must have to add up the things we find to find the big thing." Nat observed.
"What's inside the crown?" I asked. "It'll tell us where to go next. Oquen." Open, and the crown clicked open. Around it was a skinny old parchment that had been jammed into the perimeter of the crown.
It showed a city that looked old and, well I guess dead. "We'll have to ask someone." I suggested. "Maddie, Nat stay here. I'm going to look for someone to tell me where this is."
"Candace, you are not going by yourself."
"Why not? Do you not trust me? I can handle myself. Don't worry about me."
"I don't trust you sorry."
"Didn't think so. We can make our camp invisible, and then come back so no one finds it. We can all go and make Nat happy."
"That won't work either." Nat argued.
"Well do you have a better idea?"
"Um..."
"Didn't think so." Maddie oinked. "Maddie, if you think we're going to leave you behind, you're wrong."
Maddie snorted. "We know you could take care of yourself, but what if we don't come back for awhile?" Nat asked.
"You know what? Maddie you can just stay. If you want to then you can. We'll be right back." I started walking, but Nat stayed. "Are you coming, or am I going by myself?"
Nat hesitated. "I'm coming." She ran to try and catch me. As soon as we turned the corner, we saw someone and didn't ask them. They looked suspicious. A couple of minutes later, we ran into someone else. (Not literally.)
"Excuse me do you know where this is?" I asked, and then looked up at the face of our helper. I almost screamed, I knew we had to run.
