(24) Child
Queen Raeanne
"Good my queen, you are awake. I carry some great news with me." My vision slowly comes back to me as I hear someone talking around me.
"What happened?" I ask, wanting to know immediately why my head hurts so much. My eyes are fogged. I must have hit my head on something.
"You fainted and hit your head on the floor. You were not breathing for quite some time. You had the king very worried about you." Oh my husband. He must have been worried sick.
I must get this sickness taken care of immediately. I must get the physician to figure out the cause of my illness at once. I can not keep going on like this. Who is to say I will not faint at an important meeting with my council? Or while addressing my people as a whole? I must get this under control before I am ruined as a queen and killed for not being reliable to my people.
"Which brings me to my next question," he kneels beside me on the table. "You have been feeling rather ill lately, no?" He asks.
"Quite ill actually. It has been out of the blue really." I admit. Between the fainting episodes and not being able to keep any food down, this illness is really taking a physical toll on my life. I can absolutely not go on like this. I hope he has an answer.
"Well, I have news." He smiles, his grin stretching from ear to ear.
"Spill it then. Do not keep me waiting any longer. I am impatient." I urge him to tell me at once. Maybe he knows the root of my sudden illness. I must know it immediately so I can get this under control.
"I have discovered what keeps you ill in your bed. It really is nothing to worry about but it it going to change your life." He stands and walks in a circle around me. "My queen, you are with child."
The news hits me like a thousand pound boulder. Me? With child? After never being with a man- oh gosh.
"No. There has to be some mistake." I sit up and fix my dress. "You have made a mistake." But my physician has never made a mistake before. Is it possible that for the first time in his forty years of life, he is incorrect? Surely that is what has happened here. There is no other explanation for this.
"I assure you my queen. You are with child." He nods, convinced that he is correct.
No. No. I have never been with my husband like that. He will find out I was with another man before him. He will shame me. My people will start to talk about their tainted queen.
"Well," I start, more calm. "How do you even know?" I ask, never been though this before. It is all quite new to me.
"I took a bit of blood while you were unconscious to see if there was another issue, other than the obvious head injury. And I was correct. There is."
I shake my head. Impossible. It is impossible that I am carrying a child within me. I am too young. Too inexperienced. I will be ruined. "You are wrong." I whisper to myself. "Wrong I say. Wrong."
"My queen." He stands in front of me as I get up to leave. "You must stay for further examination."
"Stop!" I shout. He quickly moved out of my way. "No one is to know. When my mother comes around, you tell her it was just the head injury! No one knows the truth! Do you understand me?" I shove my finger in to his chest. "No one!"
"Yelling is not good for the child my queen. Besides, I can not lie to your mother. She will have my head. I have to tell her of the child." He tries to rationalize with me.
"Stop saying that!" I turn towards the door. "I am not with child. You are wrong."
"Your grace," he sighs and walks towards me. "This country needs an heir. Your mother can help you! I must tell her. And your husband!"
"No! No one is to know until I am ready to tell them. No one is to hear anything from you. That is an order! Do you understand?"
"Yes your grace." He bows as I rush to exit the room.
