Six: Apologize
Theo
Entry number one hundred fifty-nine:
Cass, you'd be proud of me. I'm about to do something I've never done before and I'm cringing just thinking about having to do it. I have to apologize to another human being. I know, fucking bullshit, right?
Alright, I admit I was harsh to her, but I'm like that with everyone, you know? The only reason I'm doing this is because I genuinely feel like I should. It's weird coming from me, I know. But she lasted longer than all of my other assistants and considering how fucking cheerful and positive she is I would have assumed she'd be out the door as soon as possible.
Fuck, this is going to be hard to do.
It's been three days since Ms. Hernandez quit and my pride has finally simmered down. I hated to say it, but I needed her. As an assistant, of course. Her work was fantastic. She got everything done on time. Her designing was amazing and her communication skills were goddamn magnificent. The way she worked was so good, all except the way she talked so damn much. While she is working, she goes on and on about random topics. Whenever I find myself even slightly listening, I just want to hit my head against the wall.
I had also been more hard on her than my other assistants because of the attraction I had to her. She was gorgeous, and I hated how badly I wanted to stare at her all day. Her pretty pink lips were always moving as her hands moved with them. The way her long legs shook hastily underneath the desk. She always hid her skin, though. If she wore a dress, she wore pantyhose underneath. If she had a short-sleeve shirt, she would either constantly pull it down or wear a long sleeve shirt underneath.
Driving down the street, I began searching where Ms. Hernandez had told me her address. In the interview, I had simply asked if she was in a stable home and she babbled about her dad leaving for the army and gave me her address. I guess it was useful now.
I look to the right, glancing at all the low rise and low quality buildings. Glancing on the left, I see a park. It was probably the prettiest place I had ever seen. Squinting my eyes, I look closer and see a figure sitting on the bench holding something as they look down. Finally, looking closer, I notice it is Ms. Hernandez.
I quickly park my car close by and begin walking. Entering the park, a slight breeze rustles the leaves, making them fall to the solid ground one by one. I shove my hands in my pants pocket as I get closer. I look at the ground to try to prepare myself for what to say. The pathway is nothing more than dirt littered with random rocks.
A squirrel leaves the side of the bench she is sitting on as I approach. She moves a strand of her hair out of her face whilst I sit next to her quietly. She continues to play with the peanuts in her hand, not noticing my appearance until I tap my shoe against the ground.
Her head sprints up and turns to me in surprise. A big smile forms across her face.
"Well, isn't this a lovely surprise! How are you doing, sugar?" She asks, moving closer.
I am caught off guard by her greeting. I expected her to scoff and wave me off after the way I've treated her. But here she was asking me how I'm doing as if nothing happened.
"I wanted to uh tell you something, Ms. Hernandez." I don't look at her as I speak.
"What is it, Mr. Acquire?"
"Just give me a moment. I've got to get ready."
She chuckles and sits back on the bench all the way. "Alrighty then, you just take all the time you need, peach."
Peach? Is she saying my ass is like a peach?
I've heard a lot of people use that in a sentence and most of the time they were referring to someone's ass.
I face her, "Are you saying my ass is like a peach?"
Her mouth flies open. "Where did you get that idea? Of course not! I didn't mean it like that, sugar."
I face the trees embarrassingly and clear my throat again, "My bad, I tho-"
She laughs and points at me, "You thought I was talking about your tush? I would never!" Leaning forward with a grin she continues, "Although, you've got a nice looking o-"
"Ms. Hernandez."
She puts her hands up in defense with a giggle and sits back. "Alrighty, I'm done. Peanut?" Lily offers one of the peanuts in her hand to me and I shake my head.
"I'm good, thanks."
As I try to gain the will to apologize, she tells me about the squirrel, Emma, she befriended before I got here. After I am finally ready, I scratch my head before speaking.
"I'm sorry." I mumble.
She stops talking and leans forward. "What?"
"I'm sorry. For you know, the way I treated you or whatever. You're a great assistant and uh, that was foul of me. Great, so I'll see you on Monday."
I try to get up from the seat, but she pulls my arm down. "Now, now, it doesn't work like that, mister. When you apologize to someone, you have to mean it. "
"I did mean it."
"You weren't even looking at me."
"Yeah, but I still meant it."
She grabs my chin in her hand and makes me face her. I stare into her hazel eyes and nearly forget my own name. I wasn't a weak man. I didn't tolerate anything. But fuck was I melting right now.
A small smile appears on her face slowly, her dimple slightly visible. "Look me in the eye and tell me you're sorry, sugar."
I roll my eyes before speaking, "I'm sorry for being a dick. You're a fantastic assistant and I had no right to treat you like that because of the way my life is. I'd like to have you back, Ms. Hernandez." At the hesitance written all over her face, I go on, "Not as payback for the damage you did on my porch but as my actual personal assistant. I'll start paying you and give you money for lunch. I don't know what else to say, so fuck, just come back, please. My company is out of order and you've only been gone three days."
Her smile grows wider and when she leans forward, I glance at her lips. "Well, would you look at that? Vivo and I were just discussing how I'll be able to find a new job this mornin' and look who shows up!"
"So is that a yes?"
"Of course, that's a yes!" she replies, biting her lip as she smiles.
My eyes go to them once again and I find myself longing to kiss her. Gosh. Why did she have this effect on me? And so quickly at that?
I catch myself before I can do something I'll later regret and get my chin out of her hold. Standing up, I clear my throat.
"I'll see you, Monday, Ms. Hernandez." I say before shoving my hands back in my pockets and walking away.
