"You sure?" I ask Fionna, one last time by the time Dylan approaches us.

"What's up, kids?" He asks, looking at our general direction.

"Dylan, can we talk, alone?" Fionna speaks up, sounding as confident as she does before a big game. Man, she might be right after all, she needs to do this for her own peace of mind.

My brother nods at her, looking towards me for a hint, "Sure, you wanna talk here or-?"

"Can we grab a cup of coffee, if you won't mind?" She asks and Dylan nods, looking at us, which is why Fionna adds, "Alone."

"Munchkin, Kace will drive you home, okay?" My brother looks at me and I nod at him, too nervous for my best friend to say anything else.

After school gets over, I avoid getting in a conversation with Josh or Ethan, both of whom try to catch a hold of me. I need to be home when Dylan comes back.

"Is it okay if we drop May first?" Kace asks and I immediately wish to protest before he adds, "I wish to be there too when he comes back."

I sigh, "Alright."

I feel helpless when things aren't under control, an emotion I'm quite familiar with but not at all comfortable with. But I've got to realise that this has so little to do with me and so much to do with Fionna as a person. I'm just an observer in Fionna and Dylan's life right now.

May takes the passenger seat while I hop in the back. Kace looks at me through rearview mirror and I pass him a small smile. They both get into a conversation but I pay no heed to it, letting myself be busy in my own thoughts.

When Kace drops off May, I still make no effort to move to the passenger's seat. He rolls his eyes in the mirror, "C'mon, it's a ten minute drive. Let's talk."

I sigh and move to the front through the camisole space.

"Farrah! No!" Kace almost pushes me off and I glare at him. "What the fuck!"

"What? You told me to sit here."

"Yes, and the correct way to do that is to get out of the car and get back in through the door." He sounds agitated but I just wave him off. After a pause, he speaks up, "Why are you so bothered about all this?"

"Fionna doesn't deserve to get her heart broken." I state simply.

"Don't you think she needs to do this? She has been pining over him for a few years now, it isn't healthy."

"Yeah, I guess she needs to rip off the bandage." I sigh. "You're worried too."

He shrugs while keeping his eyes on the road, "Well, only because Dylan would go in a massive guilt trip. Fionna means a lot to you, after all."

I nod, picking on my skin, "Well, we can't control everything."

He doesn't respond. Instead, he focuses on driving us to my house. When we reach, I notice that Dylan hasn't returned yet. But Kace and I make our way inside the house nonetheless.

To kill time, I heat up a frozen pizza that we share while playing Mario Kart.

"You're a sore loser, Fay." Kace teases, chewing on the pizza and I roll my eyes.

"Well, you cheated."

He takes in a dramatic gasp, "I didn't."

I smile to myself. Kace and I barely spend time together, just the two of us, his company isn't so bad after all. We do have to start working on our projects soon anyway, so I'll be seeing a lot more of him.

Just when I'm lost in my thoughts, I hear the front door opening and both of us rush out to find Dylan standing in the foyer area.

"Well?" I arch an eyebrow at him, waiting for him to respond.

"I can't believe you didn't give me a heads up about this. I froze, Farrah! What the hell is wrong with you?" He bursts out and I take a step back in surprise.

"How is this my mistake?" I stare at him in confusion.

"Isn't she your best friend? You must have known from years. Why didn't you stop her? Why would you put me through that?"

"Through what?"

"A situation where I had to break someone's heart."

There's a long silence which follows and I can feel Kace looking at me in his peripheral vision. I know Dylan is overreacting because it is very recent. He cannot possibly hold me accountable for this, he's not that stupid.

"It wasn't my place to tell, Dylan." I remind him. After a pause, I ask, "How did she take it?"

"Not good, duh. I mean, she tried to hold back her tears but she's a really bad actress." He sighs, running a hand through his hair.

"Did you tell her?" Kace asks the heaviest question.

"I wanted to, but I couldn't break her heart any further. I just told her I wasn't interested and that she would always be a friend to me because she's your best friend." He looks at me when he says the last part.

I nod and turn to Kace, "I am gonna go be with her for a while. Keep him company?"

"I don't need a babysitter." Dylan rolls his eyes, "A beer, however, would be nice."

I ignore his antics and get out of the house, having the spare pair of keys for the car. Throughout the drive to Fionna's place all I can think about is if Dylan was right, if I could've prevented her heartbreak by indirectly telling her there was no chance long ago.

It isn't like I haven't tried. I have. But Fionna has always been in her bubble world where Dylan and her were the endgame somehow.

When I park in her driveway, I notice Josh's car is already there. It makes sense though. While I waited for Dylan, he waited for Fionna. I ring the doorbell and it's Josh who greets me at the door.

"How is she?" I ask.

Josh looks shocked to say the least, "Perfectly alright?"

I ignore him and go to the living room where she seems to be watching Gossip Girl. She seems so focused on the show that she doesn't realise my presence until I call out her name.

She turns towards me and passes me a smile, "Hey!"

I take a seat on the couch besides her and nudge my shoulder along with hers, "So, how are you?"

"I am okay, it's a relief. I can let go of my hopes and dreams of having a love life with Dylan." She shrugs, her eyes still fixed on the television screen. She's distracting herself and trying to look at the positive aspect. Well, that's one way to go.

"Do you wish to talk about it?" Josh asks from behind me before taking a seat by my side.

"Nah! Can we just focus on Chuck and Blair for now?"

Josh and I exchange looks of worry but nod nonetheless. We are no one to dictate anyone's coping. So like good friends we are, we sit by her side and watch Gossip Girl with her.

We're in a middle of an episode when her doorbell rings again. Without the slightest of idea of who it could be, I get up to check the door.

Now, since Josh and I are already here, I couldn't have expected anyone else from school to show up apart from maybe Kace. But to imagine in my wildest dreams to find Ethan on Fionna's doorstep with a stupid sympathetic smile on his face, I never could've guessed that.

"What the hell are you doing here?" I ask, trying to keep my voice down.

"I got flowers for the crying girl." He makes a puppy face, pointing towards the bouquet of flowers in his hands. They look beautiful. "Well, get aside, let me get in there."

He doesn't even let me try to stop him. He pushes me aside and makes his way to the living room. I let out a low grunt and follow behind him. It feels satisfying to see both Josh and Fionna are equally surprised to see him.

"Who told you?" Josh asks him, clearly not entertained.

"News travel fast when you're in high school, kid." Ethan passes him a mocking smile. He turns towards Fionna. "Got you these."

Like the sweetest person she is, she smiles at him genuinely, "Thanks, Ethan."

"Can I do anything else for you?" He almost sounds sincere. He looks around and then sets his disappointed gaze on me. "Well, where's the comfort food? Pizza, ice cream?"

"Pizza's on its way and ice cream's in the freezer." Josh points towards the kitchen.

He hasn't ordered pizza. He just doesn't want Ethan to have an upper hand. I smile to myself at how everyone is so unpleased with Ethan's presence. It isn't that we haven't tried to like Ethan, we have, and at times he can be real charming, like right now but he has been an asshole enough times that we tend to question all his actions.

"I'll get you some ice cream," Ethan tells her, and I follow him into the kitchen.

"Why are you here?" I ask him in a firm tone, crossing my arms across my chest.

His eyes immediately fall on my cleavage and I let out an exasperated breath when he passes me his knowing smile.

"Your best friend had her heart broken. Don't you think this could win me some points?" He takes a step closer to me and I glare at him, not getting unnerved under the proximity.

"C'mon, Ethan. You can't possibly be here just to gain some stupid cookie points."

"You hurt me, love." He pouts, pulling out the ice cream from the freezer. "I do care about her, you know? We all have grown up together. I've seen her have her first kiss, her first rehearsal, the first time she fell off a bicycle and when she met you. Now, her first heartbreak. We sad people gotta stick together."

He almost sounds sincere when he shrugs his shoulder but only if things were that easy in Ethan's mind. I almost believe him but the narrowed look he gives me, I just roll my eyes at him.

"You're pathetic."

"Why is it so hard for you to believe that I can have right intentions?" He snaps, sounding hurt.

"Have you ever had right intentions?" I challenge him.

He scoffs, looking disappointed, "You can't possibly assume that I had any wrong intentions, Fay."

His voice is soft and sincere. I know exactly what he's doing and I would be stupid if I would fall for it.

"Can we just focus on Fionna, since that's why you're here?" I try to deviate from the topic but he doesn't stop looking at me. I take in a deep breath, "Please."

He takes a step back and nods. We take out multiple spoons and carry the two bowls of ice cream out to the living room.

"What took you guys so long?" Josh looks at us with suspicious eyes.

"We were ordering the pizza which you didn't." Ethan mocks him.

Josh gasps, looking at me, "Traitor."

"I didn't say a word." I scowl at Ethan because we didn't order any pizza.

I notice that Fionna has pulled out blankets to get comfortable. Since Josh and her are sharing one on a couch, it leaves no option but for me and Ethan to sit together.

"C'mon." He holds up one end of the blanket for me to scoot in and I contemplate a lot, knowing that my friends are waiting for me to respond as well. Due to the air conditioning, it is cold in Fionna's house, so without a thought, I share the blanket with him.

"We didn't order pizza," I tell Ethan and he smiles at me.

"I got you covered, babe."

"Ew. Don't call me that." I elbow him in the stomach and he lets out a painful laugh.

"What's with you girls and not liking the word babe." He whispers, trying not to disturb the other two.

"It's you we don't like, Ethan. Take a hint."

He doesn't respond, instead he focuses on his ice cream and I do the same. Just as a new episode starts, the doorbell rings and Ethan whines.

"Oh man, not it. It must be the pizza."

"I'll go. I've watched this a million times anyway." Josh volunteers and we end up continuing watching the show.

I notice the way Ethan has become so invested in the show and I laugh to myself.

"Shut up." He hisses at me and I laugh louder. He turns towards me and shakes his head but there's a smile playing on his lips. Under the blanket, I feel him move his hand to my thigh and I suck in a gasp from his touch.

We're both looking at each other intently when I feel a new presence in the room. I break away the eye contact with Ethan and look up to find Kace, who's staring at the two of us with a confused expression on his face.

"What are you doing here, man?" Kace asks Ethan.

"Just keeping our cheerleader company." Ethan shrugs, his hand still on my thigh. But no one can see it. I fidget in my place, not sure how to feel about his touch. "How come you showed up?"

"Same thing." He shrugs and moves to Fionna. "What's up?"

"Gossip girl."

"Ugh. May has insisted a bazillion times that I watch that show."

"You might enjoy it." Ethan chimes in.

"What is it about?" Kace asks as Josh settles down pizza boxes on the table.

"Just a bunch of stupid kids and high school drama." Josh shrugs. "But nothing is private, everything turns into spicy news."

"So like our lives?" Kace laughs.

"Well, now that you mention, I'm sure Ethan and Farrah can relate to Nate and Serena." Fionna pipes in, a corny smile on her face.

I glare at her. Both Kace and Ethan look confused while I turn pale. But my friends, my beautiful two idiot friends end up laughing. I have never been more thankful for the guy's lack of interest in the show.
