CHAPTER 1

The rain poured as the thunder shook the sky as its white light spread across it. The painful screams of a woman were heard all over the place. The footsteps grew louder across the wall as the Desai mansion filled with the screams and grunting of a woman. The footsteps grew louder across the wall as the Desai mansion filled with the screams and grunting of a woman.

Birth is a beautiful time in a woman's life, but at the same time, it is also filled with painful moments she has to endure. The queen, the mother of the Desai family, The beloved wife of Rajendra Desai was giving birth to the first, and only, princess of their mansion.

The last cry from her came in a rushed tone as she plopped herself back on the headrest. Her forehead filled with beads of sweat as she gasped for air after experiencing the pain of near-death.

Her lips curled in a smile as she gazed at the baby as the doctors placed it upside down and did their procedures. Her lips parted in amusement as they cut their umbilical cord off and as they cleaned the baby, whose cries filled the atmosphere.

After giving birth, most mothers become tired and their bodies force them to fall asleep. But there are some who are lucky to see their mother and baby bond before their umbilical cord gets cut off.

The doctors placed the baby in her mother's arms as it snuggled in her arms, even though soft cloth was wrapped all over her.

Doctor - Congratulations, Mrs. Desai... It's a girl.

The doctor exclaimed as she gazed at the beautiful baby girl. Her eyes grew wider as she gazed at the delicate features of her daughter. The doctors and nurses present in their room were awed as they viewed the mother-daughter relationship.

Doctor - What are you going to name her?

He asked as she turned her gaze towards him. She looked back at her baby as she smiled, her softening gaze falling upon her as she chuckled when she heard the little baby babbles her daughter gave.

Mrs. Desai - That eager to know your name, huh? .....

She leaned down to her daughter's ear as she whispered the words that made the whole sky shine in the rising sun's ray.

- Reena Desai.....

. . .

Mrs. Desai - Alexithymia?

She gasped as the doctors nodded their heads in disappointment. The woman placed her hand over her mouth, not being able to understand what was happening around them. She came out of her trance when Rajendra draped his hands over her.

Mrs. Desai - What are you saying, doctor?

She demanded, her voice slightly raised as she stood up holding her baby bump. The doctors gulped as they looked at each other before one of them stood up, sighing.

Doctor - I know it's not possible that Reena's having alexithymia... But it's true...

He didn't finish his sentence when she slammed the table, making all the doctors jump in their seats. Her eyes glowed in rage as her knuckles turned white from grabbing her purse tightly in her hand.

Mrs. Desai - She's freakin' Ten Doc. Now I want you to tell me how in the goddamn world a seven-year-old got traumatised enough to get alexithymia...

Her voice was as cold as death as her eyes turned red—or at least that's what the doctors thought they saw. Rule No. 1 in a woman's rule book: Never make a woman angry—especially a pregnant woman who is almost at her due date.

Doctor - Are you sure that she didn't do or get herself into something that made her -

Mrs. Desai - Dare to finish that sentence, and I don't know what I will do to you...

She said in her low voice, which made all the hair stand on end for all the people that were present in the room. She sighed and placed a hand over her baby bump. Their second baby was almost ready to see the beautiful world, and here their first beloved baby girl has been diagnosed with some no-emotions disorder.

Doctor - We understand your feelings, but we need to know everything that happened. Please, we're only trying to help you.

He genuinely asked in a polite manner as she sighed and nodded.

Mrs. Desai - We saw the change in her on her sixth birthday. We were cutting the cakes, and everything was happy and sensual. I didn't notice the change in her at first. It was only when we were about to cut the cake that she blew it up and stood there with nothing on her face. No emotions, no sign of happiness...nothing.

Rajendra held her close as she looked down, her lips quivering when the thought of her not being a good mother flashed across her mind.

Rajendra - We shrugged it off like it was nothing and that it was just that she felt something was off and didn't like the cake we'd bought her. But the change started when she went to school one day and we got a panicked call from her teacher.

The doctors frowned when they saw Rajendra hesitating to say whatever was about to come out of his mouth. Beads of sweat formed on his forehead as he held his wife's hand tightly.

Rajendra - We rushed to the school and saw something...

He trailed off, his words lost as the images were as vivid as anything. The doctors frowned, but they saw fear in him, in his eyes.

Rajendra - She was... talking to a dead bird. When we went near her, her eyes were wide, but her face was blank. The other kids were crying at the bird, and apparently it was a bird that was raised in the school. But she was just talking to it.

Mrs. Desai - After that, she started to act uncomfortable. Even when we revealed that she's going to be a big sister, she was just staring at us and then left to her room.

She said as a sob left her mouth. The doctors looked at each other and then politely asked them to stay out as they discussed their decision.

Doctor 1- I don't think this is something for us to handle.

He whispered as the others nodded.

Doctor 2 - I know it's too complicated, and I couldn't even know where to begin... Wait! Where are you going, Mr. Bhairya?

He yelled when one of them stood up and went out. The door closed behind them as he looked around and saw Reena standing and looking at the sky.

He crouched down to her level and slightly tapped her shoulder as she turned around. He smiled at her and then touched her hand.

Mr. Bhairya - I like your doll!

He exclaimed but frowned when Reena asked a question that was unexpected for both the couple that were standing there as well as the doctors who stood there watching the sight.

Reena - Are you not afraid of me?

Her doe eyes had no life in them. It was as if she were just a living, breathing being without any emotions. He smiled and shook his head.

Mr. Bhairya - Why would I get scared of a cute, pretty girl like you?

The eyes, which had nothing on them, flared with something stronger, something terrifying, something like fear.

The doctor looked taken aback when she clutched the doll close to her, as if she were scared that something might happen to it. Then it clicked for him that she had been looking at something behind him all this time. He turned and saw no one except her parents and the doctors. But his eyes caught something that was not visible to the others.

The doll had a dress on, and there was a stain that was more red than the rest. His eyes darted towards her hands, which were trembling. For a ten-year-old, the symptoms were drastically obvious.

Her eyes grew wide as she caught a glimpse of the words he muttered.
