Air whistled past my ears as well fell and I heard Chance screaming bloody murder in my ear. Shut up! I thought as I reached around me for that soft but cold feeling that crawled over my skin like ants. I had no idea what I was doing, I just knew the East river got closer and closer, greenish water roiling and waiting to turn me and Chance into the grease spot on the surface. I just want to stop! I thought angrily which was kind of weird, I'd just jumped over the edge of a bridge to avoid being eaten alive by dogs the size of minivans and now I just thought by thinking 'stop' as I plummeted to my death that I would? Jeez no wonder Chance always said I was an idiot! But thing was even as as I thought that a hard ball of air smacked me in the stomach before parting all around me like I was a flying squire ll and we stopped a good ten feet above the water's surface.
"WHAT THE HADES ARE YOU THINKING!?" Chance shouted fingers clawing at my shirt for dear life, hair flying everywhere as it slid out it's ponytail.
"That this was less painful than beign eaten!" I shouted back over the wind. We need to go lower, I thought and the second I did the air currents changed and we fell like a set of stones once again! Stop! I shouted in my mind again and again we did, and then with a shaky grin and a thankful prayer to the gods I didn't hate and I started a steady stream of stop and drop until we were close enough to dip our feet into the cold green water of the river.
"Now what?' Chance asked in a raspy voice like she had gotten dust bunnies in her lungs after stopping and starting above such a polluted river so much.
"We go forwards," I said hopefully and I was rewarded as the air wrapped around our bodies like a thin cocoon and sent us shooting like an arrow towards the city. Well sort of as soon as we got the nearer the buildings I quickly realized I really didn't know how to steer this thing. "Hang on," warned and I focused on the air around us. We need to go higher I thought and instantly we shot up like a cork from a champane. "Too high!" I shouted and we dropped again all the while Chance screaming like a crazy person. And sadly just like every other time instead of dropping just a few inches we dropped a ton and Chance growled as her leg banged into a street light.
"Sorry!" I said even as I told the winds to bring us up higher.
"So am I!" she growled and I couldn't see her face but I knew for a fact those purple eyes were rolling. "Don't you know how to steer this thing!"
"No!" I answered as I willed us to go up again, "I didn't know I could even do this until now!"
"AND YOU JUMPED OVER THE FUCKING BRIDGE ANWAY?" she shouted and even over the wind she was loud.
I ground my teeth and said, "It worked didn't it? I had a hunch and I followed it!"
"My gods you are an idiot!" Chance growled and I dropped us again so I could get in the direction we needed to go.
"I just have faith! You should try it!" I answered and somehow the bickering stopped and we kept bobbing up and down in the air and I breifly wondered how we looked to any humans that saw us. A pissed off redhead and a guy with a badhair cut screaming and flying over NYC. Ugh I hoped this wouldn't make the papers in the morning.
"Where are we going?" she asked after we covered a few blocks and left the inner city for a place that was much more suburban.
"A place we can get weapons," I answered as I lowered us yet again and attempted to set Chance on the stoop of the little green house where I knew we'd find help.
"Ow! You moron!" Chance exclaimed when she fell backwards off the stoop scraping her forehead against the cement.
"I think you mean 'idiot'" I corrected as I landed myself though it was much more stable proably because I made sure I was near the railing so I could grab onto it when my legs collasped. "Superman made flying look much easier!" I complained as I willed myself to stand but my jelly legs didn't want to move.
"Airsick?" she asked me as she poked me with her boney fingers.
"No idea," I said and I moved one arm to point to the welcome matt by the door. "Flip up the matt and grab the key." I told her, "I don't know if their home so grab that before you knock."
"'Their?'" Chance repeated as she did what I told her to do. "Where are we? Is this your house?"
"No," I said trying to stand again and this time I stayed up but my knees where still shaking. "But this is my home away from home. My pal Mikey lives here," and saying so I knocked twice on the door and waited to see if it was going to be answered.
"Coming!" I heard a voice call and my heart grew three sizes as the little red door opened and I saw the oval shaped face of my best friend in the world that was a dude.
"Mikey!" I exclaimed and I grabbed the guy in a bear hug and he turned into cardboard.
"Xander?" he said as I let him go and he stared at me like a deer in headlights. "When did you get here? What the hell man?" I was already pushing him aside and coming in the house.
"Very long story," I answered scanning the little entry way and it was just like I remembered, baby blue walls, wooden shoe box and a tiny sign that said take your shoes off or scrub the floor.
"Okay dude let's have some food and talk about everything. We've got time and aren't you...Hey nice contacts babe!"
"Do not call me babe!" Chance snapped as she came inside as well. "And I do not wear contacts."
"Nice try at a joke babe," Mikey said with a wink which really didn't work, since his other eye starting twitching too. I made a cut it out gesture over my neck trying to signal Mikey that he was in seriously dangerous territory but the damage had been done. Being airsick, knocked against buildings, yanked off the Brooklyn bridge and being told off by me was all a recipe to make Chance mad. Cheesy flirting was the match on the gasoline.
"Do not call me babe!" she exclaimed rounding on Mikey and this time her eyes weren't purple fire. They were actually glowing like dicso lights and Mikey jumped back yelling like a twelve year old girl.
"WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT!?" he demanded even as I grabbed an umbrella scared some immortal thing had possessed Chance. Had Hectate's magic not been dispelled as long as we thought it would be?
"An even longer story!" I answered holding the umbrella like a sword and wishing it was one as I tried to contain my panic. I didn't want to zap Chance with my new found lightening powers and I wasn't even sure I had the energy after the flight here. "Chance stop being angrier than normal and help me carry the guns!" I said hoping over the haze of her weird eyes and anger that she'd be able to kick out whatever had her like this. Chance wasn't one to take anything laying down, not mean girls, monsters trying to keep you in prison or immortal beings trying to posses your body to kill your idiot. Whatever this was her sneakers where going to go far up their ass.
Her eyes flickered back to their normal purple state though much wider and she scowled. "What the Hades was that?"
"You weren't possessed?" I asked lowering my lame weapon.
"What? No I wasn't possessed! Gods can't take over a human body idiot! Don't you think they'd have tried to do that to us already if that was the case?"
"You don't gotta yell you know," I mumbled feeling pretty stupid for not thinking of that right away. It would've been the fastest way to catch us. "So what was with the glowing eyes then if it wasn't the gods?"
"HOLD THE FUCK UP!" Mikey shouted coming out of his daze to make a time out T with his hands and to stare me down. "What the hell was that? And all this stuff about Hades and gods? Explain. Now."
I took a deep breath, "My dad is really Zeus, I'm a demigod so is she. Last year my asshole dad threw me into a prison to hold me and other demigods, I broke out on my birthday," I took another wheezing breath. "I met her, and we just shot the goddess of magic and now we are on our way back to that prison to get everyone else out before trying to destroy the gods and stop their regin of terror, cruelty, abuse and other assorted bad things." I took in a deep wheezing breath again while Chance shook her head at me
"No seriously," Mikey said, "I said explain not tell bad jokes!"
I opened my mouth to try and explain that I wasn't telling a bad joke and was serious but Chnce wasn't having any of it. " I don't have time for this!" she shouted grabbing Mikey by his yelllow T-shirt and shaking him like a ragdoll. "He's telling the truth you dumbass! And last we left the Brooklyn Bridge we had a pack of Hellhounds on our tail and we need to get going now before they pick up the trail and kill us! It'd go a lot faster if you helped so you can either give us the supplies we need and we leave and hope for the best. Or I knock you out and we steal the supplies anyways and leave while also hoping for the best. You're choice." And she shoved him back against the wall where he froze a second shaking like a leaf, normally narrow brown eyes huge with disbeilf and fear.
"That' s not a way to get help Chance!" I scolded, forcing her back and approaching my best friend like I would an alley dog. "Dude, you're my best friend, I swear this isn't something I'm making up, I thought it was at first when my mom told me. This is life and death dude and I really need your help."
Maybe it was how serious my voice was, how scared and real it all sounded because he unfroze and walked past me towards the living room where I saw the long black safe that held their guns. He spun the combo and grabbed a rifle out. "Will this do or do you need something smaller?"
"Semi-automatic shotgun right?" I asked walking over and taking the weapon from him.
"That's it," he confirmed, "good for deer hunting."
"And hopefully Furies and empousa," Chance said coming over as well, and digging around inside the safe. "Oh revolver!" she said happily grabbed the vintage looking gun.
"Doens't work," Mikey said sheepishly like he was scared she was going to glow out again. "We have a glock though, would that work?"
"Perfectly," she replied digging around again, "thanks." She reappeared gun in one hand an ammo for both in the other.
"Thanks Mikey," I said clapping him on the shoulder. "You really don't know what this means to me."
"No problem, but seriously what are you doing? I get it's bad but it can't be what you-," whatever denial was going to come out of his mouth was stopped with the front door being ripped off it's hinges and a large black snout with long, sharp teeth barked at us clambering over the wood to tear us apart
I reacted without thinking and fired, the shell blasting right between it's beady black eyes. "I fucking love the second amendment!" I shouted joyously clearing the chamber as another one came through but this one had the chain collar. I remembered him and I wasn't at all glad to see Old Ugy again. And shit-he'd brought the whole posse and then some.
"These are Hellhounds?" squeaked Mikey who backed towards the safe to grab a weapon of his own.
"Yep," Chance said and I saw her teeth where bared as she slapped a clip into her gun. "And they are going down." I waited, watching as the SUV sized dogs started to close in, hackles raised, teeth bared and a bloodthirsty glint in each set of eyes. I put my finger on the trigger and held my breath as I waited for the sharp-shooter to open fire. They'd go for the first threat and I could pick them off as they did for a while, mow down their numbers a bit. But she didn't pull the trigger, in fact, she lowered her gun and narrowed her eyes which again started to glow and I felt that same panic grab me in a choke hold.. What was she thinking?! What was happening? Hades! How was it happening? She'd never done this before!
That's when everything turned to chaos, the dogs turned away from us and with closed eyes began to rip and tear at each other, blood, fur and guts flying all over the entry way and windows and I hoped to Hestia that no joggers where going by the place to see it. While the pack of demon dogds ripped each other's throats out I didn't lower my gun, but my pulse slowed as I tried to put the pieces together. How did this happen? I couldn't blast people with lightening until today, and I couldn't badly fly either. And though Chance's eyes had always been a weird color they'd never glowed before. How was this all happening? We were mortals, we were human, how did we do such un-human stuff now?
That's when I remembered something, I'd just told Mikey my dad was Zeus. In that Disney movie the hero was human but his dad was my dad and because of that he was super strong, human, but super strong. And The Fates...they'd told us to go after Hecate, that she had to be our first target, that the gun they gave me would stop her...I remembered the pain in my chest when I was almost killed by the gorgon, the white light that I'd seen then and the one I saw again though less blinding when I'd fired lightening at Hectate. They'd had the same effect and suddenly everything crashed together in my mind like a mosaic. She was the goddess of magic and though Chance and I were human one of our parents had godly genes passed onto us.
And Hectate was why they weren't in use until now. It all made sense now as I watched the last monster get it's throat torn out, we were a bit godly, our parents had just made sure to suppress it with some magic. I looked back over to Chance and saw her eyes had gone back to normal as she stared down at her shaking hands. "How...? How am I doing this?" she asked to no one but I answered anyways.
"We are half god," I said turning the safety on my rifle and shouldering it as gun safety rules said you should. "And Hectate must've put a spell on all of us to hold that godly part back. When we shot her and her powers went bye-bye our powers were freed from their prison. You now what this means right?"
"Yeah this gives us an edge, if you and I have our...powers then everyone else does too. Getting our army will be that much easier." She said powers like it was a forigen word and I just shrugged. It was kind of nice to see her not knowing everything for a change.
"No," I said. "I was thinking I can blast down the wall, you saw what I did to the garage back in Vegas."
"You did that?" she exclaimed a bullet firing into the floor and I jumped a few feet in the air at the sudden sound.
"It looked like what I did with Hecate just less painful," I rubbed my sterum as I said that. Recalling the biting, burning agony that it was the first time. "So you got a better theory? Because that's really all I've got."
"No, no that's good," she said still seeming like she'd been smacked over the head. "So how do we get back to Hell? Are we going to fly again?"
She didn't say it but I heard it at the end of the sentence which was please say no. I grinned "Mikey can I borrow your truck? I think flying with loaded guns would be dangerous." And that was when one of the final legs of or suicide mission began.
