8. the world's edgiest family man, pt. 2

- From what you had been told, it was unlikely that you'd be going into labor on your own at this point; you'd set up a day with the doctor and get induced, everything orderly and prepared, hospital bag packed neatly with all the things that you might need.

- Apparently, this was not the way the world wanted it to work out for you. You wake up early one Saturday morning, the sun not even in the sky yet, knowing that something is absolutely amiss. Then you feel it: the horrible cramping through your back and belly, and you know for sure.

- You nudge Trent awake, (okay, more like violently shake him,)  and tell him that he needs to drive you to the hospital, right now. Still bleary from sleep, he groans.

 "Are you serious?" he asks.

"Do I look like I'm joking?" you snap.

- Once the fact that this is actually happening sets in, he's running around the house frantically, trying to locate everything you need to take with you, leaving you waiting at the kitchen table, hissing at the pain that is gradually getting stronger.

- After he decides that you have everything you need, he leads you out the door, his arm around you. He mumbles to himself as he helps you into the car. "It's okay. We're going to be okay. It's fine..." You interrupt his spiel with a growl, clutching your stomach. "It really isn't."

- He glares at you out of the corner of his eye as he turns the key in the ignition. You would yell at him for being such a bitch if he didn't look even paler than usual. "I was talking to myself, mostly."

- He tries holding your hand on the drive over, assuring you that you're almost to the hospital every few seconds, even though it really doesn't seem like you're going anywhere. He puts that hand back on the wheel when you squeeze it so hard that he's afraid you've broken a few of his bones. He's relieved to find that his fingers are all still in working order.

- Once you finally reach the hospital, he fills out your paperwork in the emergency room, leaving the two of you to wait until they can set you up with a room. As soon as Trent sits down next to you, you grab his hand again, not even caring how hard you squeeze this time. This has to be the absolute worst pain you've ever felt in your lifetime. You make damn sure that he knows this.

- Even when they finally do get you into a room, the doctor leaves you high and dry, continuing to try to breathe through the pain as you wait in the hospital bed. You turn to Trent with tears of pain streaming down your face, hoping he'll offer some reassurance, only to find that he's pulled his legs up to his chest, head between his knees. This irks you immensely.

- "Oh, no," you say. "No, no, no. I swear to God, Reznor, if you faint, I will divorce you. If anyone here gets to pass out, it's me."

- "No talking about divorce here." In that moment, the nurse decides to enter the room. You just about jump out at her.

"Do you have the drugs?" you ask. "Dear God, please tell me you have something to numb me up, knock me out, whatever. Just please."

- She grimaces, shaking her head at you. "Not right now, sweetheart," she says. "They'll be in in a bit, though, so don't do anything rash. As for Dad--" She turns to Trent, still looking like a piece of paper. "Take some deep breaths, honey. That's it." She turns back to smile at you before leaving the room.

- You almost want to get out of this bed and take her down for a bit, because how dare she deny you your much needed pain meds and call your husband 'honey' in the same breath, but you eventually manage to calm yourself, vowing that, if you're going to fight anyone in the state that you're in, it will not be this sixty-something woman who is bringing you an epidural.

- Eventually, she comes back, drugs and doctor in tow. You thank the heavens as the doctor introduces himself and the nurse administers something that sends a light fuzziness through both your mind and body. This is when everything starts to calm down; one moment bleeds into the next, until the doctor is telling you to start pushing and you're doing it, hardly feeling much at all.

- You keep gripping Trent's hand, hopefully gentler than you were earlier, as he seems to get a bit of a better grasp on what's going on, telling you that you're doing great, just keep going. Though you can't really thank him, you love him so much for being here with you rather than pacing around outside, smoking a cigar like they do in the movies. It really makes you regret your threats to end your marriage a few minutes ago.

- Suddenly, everything around you dissolves into commotion, Trent, the nurse, the doctor telling you that you just have to push one more time, just once. So you do, giving it all the strength you have. And then you hear the tiniest cry.

- Suddenly, reality sets in, and you're crying, too. "It's a girl," the doctor informs you. You think you nod, though the tears in your eyes are sort of distracting you from everything else.

- They take a few moments to try and get both you and the baby cleaned up before moving you back to the bed. Exhausted, you collapse against the pillows. When Trent comes back to the room, you invite him into the bed next to you.

- "Did you see her?" you ask, so anxious. "Is she okay?"

- He smiles, kissing your forehead. "She's perfect," he says. "Healthy. Beautiful. They're gonna bring her in in a second."

- As soon as they finally do bring her in, you start crying again. You cradle her against your chest, so amazed that this is actually happening, that she's actually yours. Trent was right; she is perfect. "She has your eyes," you tell him through the tears, leaning against him ever so slightly.

- "And your everything else. Mercifully," he replies.

"Oh, shut up," you snap, only it's more like a whisper, because if you scared this little person, you swear you'd have a mental breakdown.

- The three of you remain in silence for a while, and it's utter bliss. You swear that you have everything you could possibly want right now in just the two of them. You move the baby from your arms to Trent's, loving how gentle he is as he cradles her to him. He's a natural at this, it seems.

- "Trinity Clara?" you ask, because for all the times you discussed names, you never landed on a concrete one. Trent nods, not even looking away from her.

- You kiss him gently before nestling yourself against his other shoulder, catching up on those extra hours of sleep that you missed. You have a feeling that this will be your last catch up game for a while.

(A/N the nurse in this is the real MVP.

I didn't proofread because I'm lazy, but I'll do part 3 soon!!!)
